The origin of the word came from the american G.I.'s who call the local as Flip. It is actually an acronym for "F***ing Little Island People.
In time the real meaning got forgotten, some changed the first word to mean Fantastic or Fabulous; others think of the term in its actual english meaning (example: flip = to react with excitement).
Personally, it is just another word. It will only annoy me if I let it.
It's similar to dark-skinned individuals who are called as "Blacks". Some are fine with it, some would rather not be called as such. |

A 'flip' is basically an acrobatic feat in which the feet roll over the head (either forward or backward) and return. Or, a dive in which the diver somersaults before entering the water. It can even mean a hot or cold alcoholic drink containing beaten egg !...
So, I do not think that any self-respecting Filipino, or Filipina, would care to be referred to as a 'Flip' - by a flippant [very inappropriately comical] person. |

Of course not, maybe it's the only way racist can degrade Filipinos. By typing filipino in flipino, it's not a typo error. It was type on purpose. |

UMmm? I wonder if white Americans feel the same way about being called "Joe"?
Flip is a term used colloquially by Filipino American youth to refer to those of Filipino descent.
According to the late journalist and activist Alex Fabros, Sr. (1903â1999), the term was FIRST USED BY FILIPINOS sometime after his immigration to the United States in 1929
While Flip is usually used inoffensively, the folk etymology of the term is that it is an acronym for (words deleted but you can read answer above) which was ALLEGEDLY coined by American soldiers during World War II. In response, many young Filipino Americans changed the first word of the acronym to funny, fine, or friendly. The slang flip was invariably used as an acronym for fine-looking island people by Flip Gear, a California-based clothing brand[1] .
A more plausible etymology of the term is that it is derived from the word Filipino.
There are Filipinos who do avoid the term for other reasons (such as "flipped" being used to mean "gone crazy", giving the term a perceived negative connotation) and prefer to be simply called Filipino or Pinoy/Pinay instead.
Don't believe every thing someone says (LOOK IT UP FOR YOUR SELF). |

Filipino people are justifiably a very proud people. Due to around 200 years of degradation and occupation by egocentric foreigners they are justifiably sensitive to disrespect. I know of no nationality which enjoys being referred to by a degrading slang term. The Japanese do not like to be call "Japs". Chinese do not like to be referred to as "Chinks". .....and Filipinos do not like to be called "Flips".
SIDEBAR: When in doubt.....be respectful.....women do not like being called "bitches" either |

I was never refered to or called as a flip.
I was always refered to as filipina.
Therefore I wouldn't want to be refered to as "flip"...as I am not a flip, Filipinos aren't flips! |
