Bitter Guy

Gloria Arroyo thinks the Philippines will be a 1st world country in 20 years ....(see details)?

... because of the LAKAS-KAMPI merger. Is she:

1) optomistic
2) delusional
3) realistic
4) just full of sh*t

I very much agree with number 4. Does Arroyo even know what first world means? There are a lot of definitions and I'll give some(just some) to her. Sorry if my answer is long.

First World Country means...

1. Second floor houses with garage
┼ It's the usual home fashion in first world countries. If your house is like this in my country, people would think your rich and you accept rent. The usual(middle class) houses doesn't have second floors. Heck even my house is. I ask Mrs. Arroyo how will her government turn all if not most of our houses in this manner?

2. Gates are for rich(er) people
┼ First world countries don't suffer burglary too much and most of them don't need gates. In fact, some of them don't lock their doors. In this country, even the smallest middle-class houses has gates. There's just to much robbery.

3. Less fires
┼ The problem with the country is that homes are not equipped with fire detectors. That's why almost everyday there are numerous reports of fires. Reports of fires have lessened this days. Must be because it's Fire prevention month.
I just heard from the news about this "new" gadgetries for fire prevention. Damn it PI! What has been in America for 40 years your announcing it publicly just now!

4. Slum areas are abandoned condominiums
┼ In this country, slum or squatters area means crowded houses made of cardboard, metal shingles, a bit of wood just about anything you get from garbage. Condominiums are very much needed in the country because of lack of housing. I doubt any would shut down early.

5. Propane comes from tubes
┼ Instead of using propane cylinders to cook barbecue outside, they are used in the country for all cooking purposes. These things are very costly here but 1 could last for 3 months or so. Now where in the Philippines are they going to get a lifetime supply of propane gas?

6. Bathtubs
┼ Used for bubble baths for young kids and as they get older they stand on it and takes a shower instead. But in this country, people can't even afford showers. Bathtubs are too expensive and not too mention inappropriate for bathrooms here are too small to accomodate them. People here use pitchers(I don't know the direct translation) which Filipinos call "tabo" http://blog.622design.com/archives/tabo.jpg

7. Less public transportation
┼ Most people would be owning a car. Most pedicabs and jeepneys would be for enthusiasts. And how will that happen? Taxis here are expensive but a good source of business. My dad once rode one in Naga City, Cebu and he said he was charged 100 pesos for going around a building(which would have been 4 pesos for pedicabs). Maybe they're used for unsuspecting tourists.
Anyway, my point is it will take more time for taxis to become like jeeps and rickshaws.

8. Computers are not that out of reach
┼ It's true that Filipinos text a lot but (I think) cellphones is where the spending ends. In Philippine schools(mostly elementary and highschool), it is often stereotyped that people with computers are rich and with internet connection even richer. But in the case of first world countries, Computers are as normal as Cars.
There are only a fair number of families owning a computer set. People have to go to computer shops.

I just wan't to remind y'all how hard it is to change all of what is now in the Philippines. I'm not saying it's not possible. I'm only giving the reasons why number 4 is the answer to this question.

I'll edit this after 15 hours. My sister is breaking my b...heart again.
Next on the list:
9. A bedroom for each child
10. Not too many children
11. Has mini library for each home
12 to...I don't know about 25. I think I'll post most of them in my next blog.

plain 4

coming from her, first world country my foot!

i've always been a firebrand, my friend, so it's no. 4.

It's quite delusional, although I hope for the best that this will happen, although it seems that it might not.

Delusional if for the stated reason (the merger), and especially when one considers we didn't exactly burst out of the gate and made significant strides in the previous 20 years. So there are no indications that we are on an upswing.

I'll add though that delusional is too harsh a word, but it's the closest one can get given your choices.

How about pessimistic?

I rather go with option #4. Not unless, she will stay until 2028 as president.

battgirl
Way too optimistic. Realistically 20 years is not much of a time. In ten years time, I haven't seen much changes in the country. Every year that I go home I marvel at the fact that things never did seem to change. The Makati smog for one =)

4. Just plain Sh*t
I dont think just a mere merger of a political affillation or organization can make a country jump from 3rd world to 1st world country. Unrealistic too and borderline delusional.

In 20 years? Naah! Give it 50 years and definely not under her or the merger leadership, then it could be possible.

So, it is #4 - just full of herself.

Happy Man
Who is she, another Nostradamus?!?! That's a BIG 2 & 4 for her!

sheer♥black
I want to look at it as optimistic. It helps to have a positive look for our country.

Mergers and ideas don't contribute much to social and economic progress...... Snuffing out corruption at all levels of government, determination, and reasonable, well-thought-out plans do contribute to social and economic progress.

G
#4 , the Philippines will not be 1st world in 276 years unless drastic changes are made now . Filipinos do not like change so they must suffer 3rd world status for a long time to come

Universal Love+Truth
3)Realistic

Maybe possible--Malaysia by 2020, Philippines by 2025--nice datelines to aim for. If there is progress, development, investment and a positive attitude, the targets can even be achieved earlier, 20 years is actually a long time. It is necessary to formulate new strategies in politics and economics to achieve desirable goals. All peoples and races should work together as one to attain a synergy that can accomplish wonders. More savings and investment are required. The country's individual progress can contribute to a stronger ASEAN which will provide safety, security, and stability in the region. Many countries in the region are trying very hard to achieve political and economic stability to build a more credible ASEAN. One should remember that too many bad eggs in the basket will result in all eggs including the basket being rotten and total collapse.

alan
she's good, but she's sorounded by sh*t

bazooka jane ♥
She and her husband are too corrupt. All our resources to reach the state of and qualify as a 1st world country will be depleted if she'd be too thick to stay there till 2010. So It's #4.

kokey14
Optimistic

~∞Jeni∞~
1. optimistic. we cannot discredit her contributions in philippine politics and economy. but 20 years i think is way too short.

PGMA patterned this with Malaysia's Barisan Nasional (National Front) a grand coalition of the largest political parties in Malaysia. its the coalition behind Malaysia's economic transformation.

former Malaysian PM Mahatir's dream was Vision 2020/Wawasan 2020. it was a vision to transform Malaysia into first world status by 2020. i don't recall anyone criticizing this vision and therefore there is nothing wrong with having such a vision.

there is nothing wrong to aim high and dream big. who ever thinks that is wrong is a pessimist, cynic and seriously disturbed!
