It's like asking "it is worth to see the pyramid of Egypt or Colloseum in Rome?"
Yes! Defintely worth seeing. But first, hit the relevant history book about the wall first. Otherwise, it would be just another structure built by human...
A few things to remember:
1. The Great Wall is a structure that spans over thousands of miles. You get to see the wall in many cities or provinces.
2. The construction of the wall started over 2 thousand years ago. That was the time when the heavies machinery was a bullock cart.
3. The walls were built in the mountaneous areas where climb the steeps was a tedious task, lest moving large blocks of stones and building something on it.
Imagine how it was built and the thought would awe you when you actually stand on the great work of art in China. |

If you are going to Beijing, then it is probably worth seeing if you have the time.
When people from other countries think of China, they probably just know the Great Wall. It is the one cant miss sight of China.
Look at some photos of the Great Wall. If you feel the need to go there, then do it.
You can catch a tour yourself at the tourist bus center at the end of Tiannamen Square opposite the Palace Musuem (aka Forbidden City).
The Badaling Section of the Wall is very toursity. There is even a Starbucks there. It is the one most tourists will go to. Climbing the Wall is not a simple stroll.
BUT if you miss seeing the Great Wall, I think you are not at such a big loss.
Consider some more modern engineering feats like the Three Gorges Dam or the railway to Tibet that just opened. |

Perhaps not by itself but there are so many interesting things to see in country with more than 5,000 years of continuous history and culture. I went on very inexpensive 7 day tours from the US to Beijing and Shanghai. $1,000 convered everything except the tip, $20, to the tour guide which was expected but not required. Longer tours can include other cities for more money of course. This tour was intense, usually 8Am to 8 or 9PM. You saw a lot but were exhausted at the end of the day. It was great! |

I think so. It was on my life's to do list and I got to cross it off last year. I went in July and it was freakin hot. 109F or 43C and it was at Mutianyu and there was noone there. It was a small tour organised through the hostel I was staying at in Beijing. We climbed up from the bottom but there is a cable car. Allow a few hours once you're up there. It's a lot of work in some places, very steep and big steps. It is so full of history and so many died in it's construction that I had goosebumps a lot of the time. I think it was only 120yuan which is about US$15 so it wasn't expensive. I say go for it. |

I've just returned from China and I have to say i was really disappointed with the Great Wall
We went to visit it just outside Beijing, and it has been restored that much, it looks like a brand new wall.
There were loads of people there and there was a constant queue of people that you had to walk around just to be able to climb it. |

Yes. but once is enough.

YES! It's amazing! Being made a long long time ago (I have no idea when) and still standing for so long, its the epitome of Chinese ingenuity and engineering. Of course, there are some places that have fallen down, but if you're going for sight seeing, the wall will still be standing. You should walk on the wall, at least, and maybe run around on it. The view from the top of the towers is really great, and you can see mountains for a far distance. That depends on where you go, but in general, the Great wall has amazing views. There are cable cars running up the wall in some places, just in case you don't want to walk, and it's great fun. Just make sure you don't buy stuff at the front of the gates, and remember, you should be able to bargain for most of the things you buy. |

I think that it is one of many things worth seeing in China. There are also many other parts. Many people go to the restored sections of the wall, but check with your hotel to see if they offer a tour to one of the non-restored sections. Seeing it like that is something else! |
