You need 550 peso in local currency for airport tax else they won't let you out of Manila airport. (400 for Cebu)
Mozzie swatter and chocolate (their chocolate is blended for their hot climate and is not so nice).
Flip flops are essential.
Don't wear designer clothes, try to look like a local, else you will get harassed by people who will; "show you this"; "take you there" or just rob you.
One small tip - When you go to a bus terminal or ferry port you will have guys running up to you shouting "I get you Taxi"; just barge past them and find your own taxi, else you will have to pay him (and the taxi guy will too) for doing absolutely nothing. (These people should be taken out of town and flogged mercilessly).
I forgot - Rubbers. The rubbers that they have there are made for their little winkies.
(That last comment probably cost me 10 points, but if ur not travelling alone it's a very valid point) |

Sunbloc here is expensive, a decent can opener/bottle opener combined wouldn't go amiss. Bring your own swimsuit/trunks, disposable razor/tampons, clothes now if you're small in stature buy them here, you are just going to love the prices in the malls and shops. Batteries are cheap here so save weight in your luggage.
Above all have a great time. |

Yes, I loved it so much i moved here. In september make sure you bring a rain coat, swimsuit and comfortable clothes as it will be hot and humid. also bring a travel transformer with you as the power source is two twenty and there are many different types of outlets in use. you can get them at any electronics store. Also make sure you bring the customary toiletries with you and some charmin is not a bad idea either as the stuff here is like sandpaper. |

I spent most of Feb 2006 in central to northern Luzon (Manila and north). The one thing you will need most in September is an umbrella. Sept is right in the middle of the rainy season (generally more than 20 inches of rain) and the possibility of a typhoon can't be ruled out.
If you are into pictures, invest in a digital camera if you do not have one. I had been to the Philippines about a dozen times before and ended up with about 1700 pictures from my last trip. That does not account for about 350 pictures erased.
Try to pack light weight clothing of natural fibers (i.e. cotton). Another option is to pack just a few things and pick up additional items as needed. Undoubtedly you will want the local souvenier t-shirts and such.
For meals, try the local eateries. You can eat very good for under $2 (US Dollars) per meal if you stay away from KFC, McDonalds and Wendy's. Rice and any meat or vegetable dish will keep you going well. If you are real adventurous and can afford a more expensive setting, I recommend the Cabalen Restaurant in the Robinson's mall in Ermita (section of Manila) not far from the U.S. Embassy. It is an all you can eat buffet full of local dishes.
ABSOLUTELY DO NOT BRING ANY VALUABLE JEWELRY. Keep the fancy stuff at home. The minimum wage is about $200 (US) per month. Unemployment runs at about 12 percent. So poverty abounds, especially in overcrowded Manila.
Hope this helps. |

I live here in the Philippines. I am a Cebuano. I am proud to be a Filipino. You know, if you want a place to go to that has low crime rates, the go to Davao, there are many hotels. If you want to go to a peaceful place then go to Eden Nature Park or if you want a place to stay near the city then choose Linamrr Apartelles. You should bring an umbrella and your other things that you need.
Check this websites out if you are planning to go around Philippines:

protection, protection, protection. PI as it is know to military people has gotten very dangerous, know what you do, do what you know, and put very little faith in anyone outside of a reputable source |

The one must have item is vaccination shots.
Also, be sure to have some money hidden away on your person, such as in a sock.
And if you can learn a little Tagalog, that would be good too. |

I have lived there. There is more than one must have item... You want to have good shoes several pairs, an umbrella to keep you out of the rain, AND the sun. Light weight clothing because the heat and humidity are nearly unbearable, mosquito repellent at all times- Dengue Fever is something you do not want to have. Bring a good appetite since you can buy lots of good food at any street vendor (lechon ma-nook is very good!) stay away from the baloot- trust me on that one. Be sure you get all your immunizations before you go, and get tested for parasites when you get back. They have tapeworms there you just don't want to ever know about. What part of the PI will you be visiting? Baguio City is very cool, so you'd want a sweater if you'll be going there. |

September it is starting to get cooler but all you neet is t-shirts, shorts and sandals. Dont take a lot as clothes are so cheap out there you could buy a new wardrobe. If you visiting Manila then also ask your doctor for a T.B jab as there is an outbreak there at the moment |

Take a good map of any area/city that you are planning to visit, as well as phone numbers and addresses of friends and your country's embassy. PHI is a beautiful country, with some of the best scenery and shopping in the world; but there is a sense of concern about security everywhere you go. It may be overstated, but robberies and kidnappings seem to be in every local's mind whenever they are dealing with a foreigner.
Manila has everything... the antique shops near the convention center are very interesting if you are looking for either good or cheap items. |

I'm a Filipino ^_^. If you're planning to go to manila, I won't suggest it because of the highly polluted environment here and quite smelly places. The only place in manila I would suggest to you is the makati city, It's our business capital.
In the Philippines, we just ended summer so this coming June and July we'll expect typhoons and storms so I suggest bringing your own umbrella. We mostly wear thinner clothings than in colder countries like U.S. so I suggest it. The best place here (I think) is the Palawan province because of it's highly preserved forest. Be ready for some problems though, If you're planning to go to mindanao, you may find yourself in the brink of danger for the many Al-Qaeda linked terrorists there, but in fairness Mindanao is a very beautiful land. September is quite a cooler month of the year because we're nearing the Christmas season. Hey, there is currently some political probs here so get used to it.
The Philippines is a Christian country so expect some Catholic traditions here like fiestas. I suggest also bring your own self defense mechanism ^_^ because many criminals are in the streets of manila. Bring also some jackets for the colder weather, some food and other necessary things for a tourist. And of course, bring your passport ^_^
All in all, there is no really must have item for us. Everyone is welcome to us Filipinos and I just suggest thinner clothing than what Americans or Europeans where because it's one hell of a lot hotter in here than that higher latitude countries. |

i live in the philippines actually.
you don't have to bring much. just a good mood for the beaches and people. the usual sun block and shades would do.
you would also want to be ready for the hot temperature, so keep a fan in hand.
don't forget to try the native foods like lechon and seafoods! :) |
