lol..
well race... some people mistaken me as korean, but most people thought im indon-chinese!

i dont know why..
even my teacher asked me...

during attendance, she asked, gabriel, are u indonesian?
i was lk, hell no im malaysian, what makes u think im an indon anyway? she just said by pure guessing.. and almost every friend thought im indon before they befriended me

Malayan Tiger
People have mistaken me for Bigfoot.

Shinou Atsumu
Yes, alot of times. Usually, people thought that I am Malay even before I speak which is kinda funny, because I am so fair-skinned. Then, when I finally speak in my ancestral language, they all ask "Huh....you're a Chinese ah? I thought you're Malay. You don't sound like a Chinese."

To AQ,
I think your remark that "Malaysians like to judge by skin colour first" is a little inaccurate and bias. The more correct phrase should be "all human race namely Homo Sapiens like to judge by skin colours" as discrimination is a worldwide issue. More so in the West, if you ask me. Period.

TheBear? (VIP?)
People often mistaken me for being a Chinese, Japanese or Korean for my looks, or a Malay from the way I speak on the phone, conversing in fluent Malay or a Muslim (back in Thailand, because I tell them that I lived in Malaysia ---as for Malaysians, many of them think that I am a Thai citizen just because I tell them that I am a Thai, since they've questioned my race... not my nationality).

No biggie...

yup when i was still studying in KL.They thought that im an indon due to my sabahan slang...or a chinese .but its an advantage for me to buy food during fasting month without being stared at......hahahah

People mistake me for Japanese, Korean, Thai, but mostly Eurasian.
I got fed up and said I was half hawaiian and half Jap and then muttered a few Japanese phrases. They believed me.

The first thing is I don't know what's my race. If we equate race and ethnic origin, as it is a custom in Malaysia, nobody will guess my race. They say I look like a Saudi...

The very basic principle of racial profiling is wrong. Unfortunately Malaysians like to judge by skin colour first.

ANDERSON P
When I am in Hongkong, they assume I 'm Filipino, when I 'm in Thailand, they spoke to me in thai (selamba aje), when I'm in Singapore, expats there asked me if I m an Eurasian because my nose is too sharp for a chinese. In Japan, I was assume, a Japanese

My god what product my parent have produced?

some of the police in this country also profile dark skinned men, but they dont ask for money, yes that policeman was terrible for harrassing your father.

I was asked if was Chinese soooooooooooo many times. When i go to restaurants or supermarket or any kind of shop with Chinese owner, they simply talk to me in Chinese. It was annoying before but get used to it now. All because i got a small eyes (not that small pun.... )
Then people mistaken me for a Filipino also sooooooooo many times, they speak to me in Tagalog, make me feels like i'm in the set of Tagalog 200 episodes drama, all because i said i'm not Chinese and before i told them i'm a Dusun, they assumed me to be one of them.
Then they are people who thought i was Korean or Japanese. Even talk Japanese to me. When i said i don't talk their language, god only know what they are blabbing about.
They are one time a Filipino scold me for forgetting my roots. Only because i migrated to Malaysia, he told me not to forget my own language. ^&?>%>^L#<@?<#@... haha.. What the hell..
aiyaaa.... i'm a Dusun la...

dad - mistaken as malay due to red tanned skin
mum - china mari due to fair white skin
me - chindian, indon, sabahan, vietnam, singaporean, dn't knw what kinda mixed race creature.
(ho ho ho story time :P)
Most ppl. said I've weird eyes like siamese/egyptians, skin tone color not normal like chinese, attittude & personality, tone of my voice & way I speak.
I've get a fair share of ppl asking if I'm a Vietnamese since 5 years ago in college. Even the Viet. & Myanmar student & the student exchange programme manager thought so too.

The most shocking event was in a (rapid kl) bus. Whn I entered d'packed bus, I went searching for place to stand. Could feel wow many eyes on me. I thought I forgot to zipped my jeans or button my blouse. Thn a group of the guys kept smiling at me & kept talking excitedly among themselves (for a moment I thought either they were horny or I look extra pretty that day LOL), but I act dn't knw & continued reading my workfiles. Suddenly realized until a gal kept waving at me to sit beside her. She's kinda sweet & pretty. She spoke in some language sounds pretty mixed of asian dialects..only 1 word I understood was "saigon", thn I spoke in English sorry. "I only speak English, Malay, Chinese".

So ended up, she & another guy talking to me in mixed malay, broken english & & some kinda Viet.lang. She told me, I look very similar to the gals in Saigon.
While d'guy ask me if he can marry me LOL coz. he's also Chinese (but dn't knw Chinese only some dunno wht dialect).
So fast wanna sapu gals. He even asked for my no. but I lied it's my bro's. eventually he even wanted to follow me to my work place...freaked me out. Luckily managed to get down d'bus along wth another crowd of passengers during 1 of the sudden stops by road side.

Weird thing, I'm the odd one in the family tht physically doesn't resembles neither of my family members. O_O

Usually, when people discoer my name for the first time, they automatically assume that I'm a muslim-I have a pretty long, muslim-sounding name.

: )

yup, thai when i was in thailand. also, chinese, malaysian, japanese and even korean. i just tell people that one of my ancestors is chinese who moved to the philippines.

In Europe, people think I am from China, Japan, Korea.
When I told them, I am from Malaysia, they said, "But you are not Malay!!!"
In Thailand, most people think I am Thai and speak to me in Thai.
In Singapore, no problem.
In Australia, a Vietnamese....lol.
Elsewhere........I always look like someone they all knew...hahaha.
----------------
A friend of mine is Chinese-Indian.
He looks like an Eurasian before becoming dark-skinned due to working outdoors.
Everytime during the Puasa month, during lunch, the police would stare at him.....then...

They approached him and said, "Sekarang puasa, tau tak?" (Now is fasting time, you know?)

He answered, "Ya, saya tau tapi saya bukan Melayu" (Yes, I know but I am not Malay)
They replied, "Tunjuk IC". (Show your identity card)
He replied, "Kenapa?" (Why?)
They said, "TUNJUK!!!" (SHOW!!!)

He showed his identity card.
They looked at the card, then at him, a few times.
>>>>>Chinese name.......lol.
They asked, "Kau Cina?" (You Chinese?)
He replied, "Ya....Ini Malaysia". (Yes...This is Malaysia)
They returned the IC and left.....no apology whatsoever.

Sure, for the first 2 times, he was very annoyed but in all the following years, he got used to it and found it quite funny------

No but I have mistaken others for another race, a waitress who looks like Iban but actually a Chinese. This happens often in other restaurants too. Quite embarrassing for me.
My worst experience is when I mistaken a waiter for a waitress ..

yup.. i think..

when i was in thailand.. ppl speak thai to me..
so i assume my face is thai's..

when i was in indonesia... ppl speak indonesian to me..
i try to speak indonesian slang .. end up they think i'm sumatera indonesia to them..

in australia, at the muslim butcher shop while buying some meat.. the arabic butcher speaks arabs to me.. i just laugh & said. mate.. i;m a malaysian..

so i dont know what i look like from other person's perspective..

HaNtu=)
I am pure Chinese... I was born very fair but I liked outdoor activities so I'm kind of dark compared to other Chinese.

I was mistaken for:

Thai in Thailand. Paid to enter the Grand Palace and the people at the entrance looked at me as if I was so stupid to pay. They looked at me from top to bottom. I was never approached by cheats who are targeting non-Thais like my friends.

Malay:
Chinese salesgirls speak BM to me for so many times I've lost count.

When I started my training last year, my supervisor told my friend who was under him at that time that there's a Malay girl to be supervised, and it would be difficult for him to speak BM to her- knowing that I was the only female trainee there, my friend answer, "Huh!? She is Chinese!" And even after that he still thought I look like Malay.

Same training place. It was during puasa and this malay guy from another company came up to mine to pass my company some things. Then he asked me a few questions like where was I studying, etc... After talking for like 5 minutes, he asked, "Awak tak puasa ke?"...-_-;; because I was eating...

RapidKL bus- Pak Cik Driver asked me where I was going and then he asked if I'm Malay. I said I'm Chinese, he thought I was lying to him. I told him it's true but he didn't believe me so I just kept quiet... geram.

Indian:
When I was coming back from a beach in Thailand, a Malay uncle asked me if I'm Malay or Indian... He said that I look like Indian.... I'm Chinese la!!!!!!!

Thank goodness when I was in China, the Chinese asked me, "Which province are you from?" Very happy when I heard that.

Sarah
yah, many say i look like malay
