Which explains why I hate going to the mamak. But language aside, I'm more concerned of the cleanliness and health risk. Remember that these people are imported from India and they have the world's largest TB carriers. Try watch closely when they prepare the food, I tell you... GELIIII oii! |

hey so far i've got no problem ordering in mamak..
coz always a regular there,so they know what we want.
(yeah, coz we always eat the same thing there..)
but there's a certain restaurant selling nasi campur and desserts in jb with vietnamese or burmese or nepalese workers..susah la..
speak english,they dont understand
speak chinese, they nod their head but still blur
speak malay, lagi bingung
sitting at the corner table,a chinese looking waiter came to us..
me : hei nuo mi..you ma?
guy : *mouth open wide..look blur*
me : black glutinous rice got or not?
guy : * nod,then shake his head*
me : *getting irritated* pulut hitam ada tak?
guy : eh..*blur*
hubby : itu la yg hitam punya...
guy : ????
me : hei nuo mi, o o de...
guy : ah..ah..*nod his head* ( finally)
later,he came with 1 bowl of pulut hitam..without santan..
me : boleh kasi santan tak?
guy : ???
me : santan..coconut..kelapa..yaa !
then he walked away, came back... brought a big coconut to me..

oh yeahh....
Mamak: you mau makan apa?
Me : Kasi roti canai 2 keping. Teh ais. Kasi cepat aar! Laparla.
Mamak: ok siaaaappp!
(5 minutes gone, no roti canai and teh ais in sight...)
(5 more minutes gone, the mamak came...)
Mamak: You mau makan apa tadi?
Me : Roti canaila!! Teh mana?
Mamak: Oh ok... sikijap aar.. sikijap...
(He turned around with hands pointing on to us on the table screaming his lungs out to the kitchen guy saying ..... er .. whatevaaaaa..)
(5 minutes gone.... my teh ais arrived, but still no sign on my roti canai....hubby has finished eating his nasi campur)
Altogether, i think more than 20 minutes passed, i got fed-up and called the mamak....and the fella said...
"Ya... you nak order apa?"
I was dumbfounded... by the time i want to open my mouth and say something....
"Kepala hotak kau!! Ko pegi cepat buat itu roti canaila!! Baling dengan cawan ni kang!!"
It was my hubby, furiously mad, who already had his tummy loaded (kekenyangan)... |

yes ...
1) communication problem. they dont undertand wat we say, we dont understand wat they say either ...
2) attitude probelm --> never have a smile on their faces, and if we ask for some minor changes (like less ice), their faces turn darker ... even when we are paying for the food, that kind of look on their face make you feel like an unwelcomed species.
3) pricing problem --> due to barang naik, all prices up again
of course not all, but quite a lot of them adopted this business model ... |

Those imported Indian workers are poor in BM. He didn't understand what is "milo ais kosong" then I said "milo kosong ais" he baru understand. Hello... Only I terbalikkan the words he also don't understand. |

I experience that several times, they don't understand malay, english or even basic english. But it helps sometimes when there's a menu & I would point at it.
If still don't understand I would approach the main waiter/cashier. Watch out whn they simply charge the price for food.
There's one time, I waited too long for my limau ais. I just finish my nasi campur thn while paying the cashier ask what about the drink. I replied the drink never came so I'm not paying for it. Thn he apologized and gave me a discount :D
But what to do our locals "don't wanna work mah". Besides the pay for local mamak stalls ain't that much. They wanna "keep the biz. within them". |

yes!
there is this one show on Astro: "Lu Pikir La Sendiri" where the presenter, Nabil interviewed people on the street.
Once, he got hold of this worker from a mamak and asked his opinion on something. The man nodded and say "Ada."
Nabil raised an eyebrow and asked another question. He answered "ada.".Then he asked at least 10 more question, which the man still replies "Ada."
FINALLY Nabil was gagging in laughter, and asked him:
"Teh tarik ada...?"
The man finally answered with more than one word "Ada, adaaa....Teh tarik ada, kopi ada, jus oren ada....." |

Yeah, once I asked if they have tosai, he said yes but he shake his head like saying 'No', and one time I ordered lime juice, and my friend ordered teh 'o', then my friend said her teh 'o' taste like lime. So she asked the guy to replace it, then the guy came with teh 'o' ice limau! :D |

My trouble with mamak stalls is I can't decide what to eat.
Should I have plain tosai with dhal and chutney only or tosai masala kurang kentang or rawa tosai tak mau daun kari or tosai ghee kurang gula or roti kosong garing or roti tisu or plain nasi lemak sikit sambal or with fried chicken, potong or plain maggi goreng kurang minyak or maggi goreng kambing kurang minyak...?
Teh tarik kurang manis or teh halia kurang manis or teh ais kurang ais or sirap limau kurang masam...?
Half-boiled eggs or no half-boiled eggs..?
And yeah, that too, the communication problem. When I'm done deciding, they don't get me and bring me the wrong order. |

Yes ... very problematic these Indian workers ... the mamak stalls I frequent don't have menus in paper form but only in display at the food preparation area ... so, I got to go to the menu, point at what I want ... you can imagine how much pointing involved ... lol ... unless the fella is well verse in malay or english ...
One thing for sure, when they shake their head from left to right when taking order, don't be too sure you will get the correct thing ... lol ... also, I try not to deviate from the 'normal combination' they offered ... for example, if I order starfruit plus orange juice, I can guarantee 100% they don't know what I want ... lol |

Hmm...very rare for me. Unless its communicating in Chinese (because English or BM cannot communicate with them...) but I can't...I'm a banana... :( well...still anyway. Only simple words only I can say. |

Mamak is the last place I will go if I hungry.
I am very concern about the cleanliness eventhough they're not hiring workers from India. |
