not all of us are superstitious.
the elders are the most superstitious ones. ya know. all the very old grammas and grandpas. they have a lot of beliefs. and they have beliefs because well.. that's what our ancestors planted into their heads back then..
our mothers and fathers are not that superstitious. maybe half are superstitious. but not all.
only some teenagers are superstitious. barely half. well really, superstitions are wacky and hard to believe. honestly.
to answer you question... no. we are not superstitious because of our religion. we are superstitious because ever since we were kids, our grandparents would tell us and our parents all the kinds of the things they believe in. our grandparents believe those things because their parents planted those in their heads and so it goes. in other words.. CULTURE... and TRADITION...
superstitions started out as ways to 'scare' children to not do naughty things and to 'scare' children into doing errands and also to 'scare' them to be careful. and eventually their children believed in those superstitions and in time told their children about it. and so the process of passing on superstitions began. but as i know, superstitions also started to explain some of the weird things that happened around here back then. yes, our ancestors had very wide and wild imaginations..

they are superstitious becuase most people are poor and poor people need superstitions to hope and psychologically survive.
they are religious becuase Christianity has been used to manipulate them since the occupation of the Spanish till now with the US. |

How much about the Philippines do you know so that you will take the liberty of stereotyping the 80million+ population as superstitious, religious, land of coconuts?? |

I am trying to change my ways. I believe I am now more spiritual and less religious. There are some superstitious beliefs that I do cling on to, by force of habit.. or to appease the old people. |

we are not all religious, but many are.
we are not supersitious, but only the older people.
these days, younger people tend to be rational.
the philippines is not a land of coconuts, although thats a major export! |

before arrival of spaniards the natives worshipped anitos and already used agimats. much like everywhere else even in europe, people worshipped something. its only nowadays that people turned to worshipping themselves. |

I am not religious because I am superstitious nor am I superstitious because I am religious. I believe in God yet I believe in the existence of other spirits in our midst. Fallen angels, I call them. |
