bawang literally means onion

bawang merah = red onion = shallots
bawang putih = white onion = garlic
bawang besar = big onion = spanish onion, indian onion, red italian, yellow granax
daun bawang = onion leave = spring onion or scallion

bawang putih, bawang merah = m'sian folklore (m'sian version of cinderella)

In Malaysia "bawang merah" means red onion and "bawang putih" means garlic ( white onion ). In general , the term "bawang" refers to "onion"

There is two types of BAWANG actually....

One is BAWANG Merah (RED) and another one is BAWANG Putih (WHITE)....

So, BAWANG MERAH is RED ONION......and BAWANG PUTIH is GARLIC.....

Bawang Merah = Red onion = Shallot
Bawang Besar = Big Onion = Onion
Bawang kecil = small onion = shallot (same as red onion)
Bawang Puteh = White onion = Garlic

What's a Bawang? it is a garlic, and they have a Fried corn that they sell its name is Bawang...


The Bawang thingies are actually very nice! They're crunchy and very garlicky, so I bought two packets - one for me, one for Mr Smartie. That way we can stink together. :)

Well, Chesney C got it right for us in Malaysia. For addition, for my mother tongue, bawang also means land/place we stay..
