It can have two meanings. As long as you do something or as long.. as you don't.

It is basically, telling you that you can do something, (I'm having to use it.. again!) as long as you, do/don't do the other thing first.

Everyone gave you great examples but let me point out something to you, this can mean 2 things. It's either a measurement, or you're talking about a requirement.

Measurement of distance: This pencil is as long as this bottle. This river is as long as that road.
Measurment of time:
I'll read this book for as long as i can.
I'll exercise for as long as i can. I'll love you for as long as i live.

Requirement: You can borrow my homework as long as you don't loose it. I'll go to the party as long as we come back before it's dark.

I'm not sure what your asking for but I'll try to help you out.

You can have dessert as long as you eat your dinner.
"...as long as..." is almost the same as saying "...but only if..."
try the same sentence but switch as long as for but only if.
