koreans normally have small eyes/obvious plastic surgey make-over.
vietnamese is a bit darker than all of them
japanese are the shortest of them all
chinese can be differentiate by their language as mandarin is the emerging world language.

monicha
umm by their last name...most of the time you'll know or by their face structure or just the way they look.

Last names. Japanese last names are the most obvious.

More blurs between Chinese/Korean/Viet last names... here are the ones I can think of: "Lee" or "Li" can be either Chinese or Korean, "Lam" can be either Chinese or Vietnamese.

Other than that, it's pretty clear from the last name what country one is from. "Wu" and "Chen" are obviously Chinese, "Kim" and "Park" are Korean, "Kobori" and "Tanaka" are Japanese, "Nyuyen" and "Nong" are Vietnamese, etc. etc.

Just ask.

Ask

Asian instincts.

?
Sometimes, it can be hard. You should listen to them talk first before you assume.

violetviolet
I think it depends on how much you interact or see them...If you see them on a daily basis, then, it's a cinch, right. However, if you don't then you'd be questioning the person's race.
But if you're Asian, it's not hard. You can tell in their facial structure, their nose (easy to tell if it's Vietnamese) & eyes.

Guy M
ask their mamas

Kenneth H
The Japanese, Vietnamese and Chinese have distict characteristics when you know these you can tell most of them apart. The Koreans look like tha Chinese.

CharWiz
When you have a lot of contact with them, you will be able to tell the difference.

rahkokwee
you can ask them.

Kuoppa
Look at their eyes...

Sometimes physical differences are not too obvious but some people can tell by listening to the ways they speak their languages. Chinese do not pronounce the letter "R" in their language, Japanese do not pronounce the letter "L", etc., for example.

ask them for their last name

Ask. If you assume anything then you could get yourself in serious trouble.

Carmen B
Ask them if they can show you their passport.

I just can tell, but thats because I've lived with them.
Really it is in their eyes.

just ask their names.

anyway i dont think its true that people can know if someone is japanese, chinese, vietnamese or korean by their looks.
I met some koreans who have natural big eyes.
and my aunt who is from japan is quite tall.

saulg21
Do something crazy like walking up to them and introducing yourself.
