'One' at the end of a phrase or sentence is generally taken to mean 'like so', Or 'like that', 'that one', etc.
I suppose it is something to do with 'mother tongue/dialect-influenced' emphasis, notably amongst Malaysian Chinese. They also use additives such as 'ma', 'na', etc.
Just like the Malays, who would add 'lah!' after a sentence or phrase Or remark, just to emphasize the particular sentence, phrase or remark in an emphatic manner. |

Try Wikipedia (Malaysian English, Chinese English, Singapore English, Interlanguage etc)
It's an informal variety of English or Malay language. And it's called code-mixing/switching. Usually used to show ethnic identity and establish higher/lower solidarity.
I learned this in Psycho-sociolinguistics.
Isn't language interesting? :) |

No laa,
where got one?
We answer very systematic laa.
Where got we speak like that one?
In some countries, they use "You know," at the end, which I don't know. "You know?" I don't know. "You know?" I still don't know. Some Malaysians even imitate that, but not favorable, only use by posh and elites. "You know?" I still do not know.
"Phua Chu Kang?" I thought I heard that "one" in the 80's, maybe earlier.

Better still, why not five?
"How come like that five?"
"That thing not like that five!"
"How come you speak with a five behind five?" |
