It's actually not a big issue but if you want to be on the safe side, heres some tips.
1. Don't put important things in your pockets and backpacks. If you're unlucky and do meet one, they can cut thru your bags when u dun realize.
2. Go with the customs, as u can see once u get there, many store vendors wear fanny packs in front of them therefore u get to see where everything is, right in front of you.
3. Try to stay away from crowded places, thats where most of them strike. if you must, leave the important things at the place you're staying and trust and just bring the essentials
4. Don't try to take too much stuff around with you cuz that just gonna get u distracted from thinking what did u bring and what did u forget the whole time.
5. bring a copy of your passport and report to the embassy once you get there, because if anything does happen, you'll want to be sure you can get out of the country the same time as your flight.
6. Relax and enjoy the country, it's really not that scary and it's really not that common.

Find something with inside pockets or safety pin pockets inside your clothing or coat.

Francis is wrong! People do steal from you and I have seen it first hand. don't carry money in a shoulder bag and don't keep it in loose pockets. I have been hit by cars on pedestrian crossings and been attacked by youths. All of my Chinese friends are scared to travel outside the cities and say only foreigners are stupid enough to do that.

they have these waist belt things that you wear under your shirt so it's close to your body. also i would try to due with out any unnecessary items if you can...do you really need your music with you? keep your stuff as close to your body as possible and be cautious of anyone scoping you out and if someone bumps you check to make sure you have everything on you still. don't flash your stuff around they watch to see where you put your stuff after you use it.

well first don't ware a purse thats asking for it. try wearing one of those things (don't know what they are called) around your neck and it goes under your clothers, not very fancy but your won't lose your stuff. good luck and have fun

Zhou
dont wear pants with pockets...

Fancy You
Buy those travel socks that have zippers on the side and put your stuff in there.

When we traveled to Europe, we went to Target and bought a travel wallet. Had a string that went around your neck and stayed under your clothing. We kept our passports and money in them. They worked great and cost under ten dollars.

i did that, for three weeks in China, And I was never pickpocketed. I just kept my hands in my pockets in Buses or large crowds and I was fine. There actually aren't as many pickpockets as they tell you. Or at least I didn't see any and neither did the 15 other people I was traveling with. We never got pickpocketed.

works anywhere in the world. get a money belt & wear it under your shirt or keep you wallet/purse as close to your skin as possible.hope it helps enjoy your trip

Sara B
well thats a little stereotypical lol
uhmm make sure you have zips then zip up in a bag or something

W00tbeer1
Go Kong-Fu on their butts! Hi-YA! I'm joking, just carry a knife.

msbritt :
If your worried about pick pocketing then my suggestion would be to have a shoulder purse with alot of zippers and a flap that locks over it for extra protection. fanny packs are optional but can be unflattering. Also i have a jacket with zipper pockets and a zipper on the chest pocket so i keep all my credit cards and cash in that compartment so i know it's safe at all times. keeps your hands free and makes you less likely to be targeted. Keeping your items stashed and nearby is your best beat. Always be aware of your surroundings and your items will be guarded. enjoy your trip!

China people aren't robber. Just avoid crowded places and dark streets. Be sure to put your bag where you can see it.

There are just very few bad people (thief) in China. So, the chance you face this is the same as you do in other countries.

And it also depends on which part of China you are going to. Hong Kong is a safe place. And I have been to Shanghai last year, I didn't met any thief. One thing I can share with you is that I had met a few people (beggar) asking me for money, I just pretended that i don't understand what he is talking about and go away!

Anyway, i suggest you to put your valuable goods in a bag and put in front of you, so that you can easily see who approaches you.

and also, you can make photocopies of your home country identity card and your passport and put them in your luggage, in case that you met thief and lose all stuff, the photocopies may help you easier seek help from police and Consulate to identify yourself and get back home.

best advice is just don't go to china

Stephanie
The same way you would prevent pick pockets anywhere else.

sellatieeat
Bring a bag with you and put it all in. Make sure you zip up the bag and keep the bag near you at all times.
If you are in a bus, hold the bag with the strap around your body.
make sure no one "accidentally" bumps into you.
and don't look around all suspiciously.

wicked.aliens
Don't carry anything in your pockets.
Place them in your shoes or other hidden areas.
If you wear a backpack wear it in the front.
Be alert at all times.
but also they sale those zipper pockets
that you wear under your shirt or below the knee
You can look into those.
Just be careful and Good Luck.

Crime in China is very low but be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Dont carry large amounts of cash about with you, dont place your wallet in your back pocket or jacket pockets, best bet is to invest in one of those bags that goes around your waste under your shirt if your really careless.

Put it all in a zip up bag and put the strap over your back, with your hand over the zip.
