How do u feel about "dog" being temporarily removed from menus' in China during the Olympics?

I am thinking if I could start a campaign to remove cows from menu.

No offence but what sort of a weird question is that?
'Steve H' is right.
when the Olympics is in Sydney should we have (supposing we did back then) stopped eating kangaroo?
What's wrong with eating dog meat when there are people who eat pigeons and rabbit? I seriously don't get your question, what is there to discuss? Its not like its something 'discussable' like "How do you feel about road closures during WYD in Sydney" were the answer could be "As a motorist i feel annoyed" and "As a participant, i feel safer."
To you people who think its bad to eat dog meat, um... did you know there are something called WHALES being killed for meat not scientific research? (and while im on that topic, the daily telegraph i think a while ago showed pictures of all these whale meat dumped at japanese cafeterias made into burgers etc because theres no legal market for whale meat.)
'The Positronic Pimp' is actually right, i must say people have so many misconceptions and stereotypes of China, not just this. Many of the information you get from the Westerners are incorrect, exagerated or just plain made up. I watched a bit of this program on ABC1 tonight and this Chinese person was helping (just a word) "Outsiders" report on things in Xi Zang. (Tibet) Soon, the whole world will be supporting the liberation of Xi Zang but does anyone bother with Xi Zang's historical relation to China? Xi Zang has been part of China for a looooooong time. Xi Zang was actually a slavery country, they had their 'lord' thing which ruled them, and all children born to them were automatically slaves (just like the Hebrews in Egypt) except China gave them their freedom from slavery.
But no one evry bothers with China, who gets stuff stolen from them, gets the bad media and stereotype. I can't really blame China for their coruptness after basically its whole culture has been 'borrowed' permanently. I'd be angry too. Also theres heaps of stuff now recognised as Japanese instead of Chinese (eg ori gami is the jap pronounciation using the exact words in Chinese as Zhe Zhi)
Also on Western stereotypes, HEAPS of stuff is deliberately modified to suit Westerners which is unfair because just because you can't pronounce it doesn't mean it has to be changes. If you are finding it hard to keep up at school will they change the sylabus for you? No. "Kung Fu" is not "KUNG" its "GONG" (by the way, 'Po isn't even a proper name in Chinese. You need at least 2 words and the first is ALWAYS the surname. (Some of the meanings of 'Po" in Chinese are 'pour', 'old woman, granny', 'broke, break' none of which i think is remotely fit for a name.) and "Tai Chi" is NOT "Chi" its "Qi"
The "Zen" monk its not jap, they were in China ages before, and written the same in Han Zi in CHinese is 'Chan" and also i seriously don't get this. Where did the 'P' in Bei Jing come from? How the HECK did it change to "Peking"? I mean, read it wrong and it becomes "Pecking". Its not 'P', so "Tai Pei" its NOT "Pei" its "Bei"
and im off track so see you guys later
and i totally agree with 'Spider'. Don't they say "when in rome do as the romans do?" (they have a similar 4 word saying in Chinese)

Mr Hex Vision
Damn that means my Sunday lunch has gone to pot....

Well as others had more or less put it there is no different in eating a dog or a pig.

It depends on what value the animal that means to you.

For westerners a dog has more value as a pet, while over here it has more value of a food source.

Its the same in India a cow has more value as a religious icon while in the west its has more value as a happy value meal.

I think the only way your going to know how you feel about eating it is, if like me you were tricked into eating it.

The Positronic Pimp
Bite me. (Pun intended)

In today's urban China, the consumption of dog meat is never a significant part of the Chinese diet, despite the twisted Western stereotypes.

I think that's awful. I mean, it is only a little thing, but China should not compromise its gastronomy just because it is going to have a few visitors! It is kind of them, but unnecessary. If you are going abroad, you should be willing to try things from their culture, and if not, then avoid them - it's a menu!

Jxdy11
Dog is not popular in China. Although it is served in some places, most Chinese have never eaten it. Although I love dogs and would be horrified to eat them, I respect their right to eat whatever they want. If you don't want to eat dog, just don't order it. So to answer your question, I think it's ridiculous that the Chinese have to remove it from the menu. Why? Do the Italians remove horse meat from their menus when they hold the Olympics? How do you think Hindus feel to visit the US where cows are slaughtered daily? I find the idea of eating veal to be disgusting because of what they do to a baby calf to get it, but why don't they ever remove that from a menu in the West? Some Africans also eat monkeys, do you have any right to change that? Honestly, it's a ridiculous expectation for people to change their menus so they don't offend any Western sensibilities. You're visiting a different country, so you should expect for things to be different. All animals are edible, so it shouldn't be beyond your expectation that all of them are eaten at some point by someone in the world. If you don't want to eat it, then don't.

Steve H
When the Olympics are held in London will we stop eating pork?
Does anyone ever ask that question?

Would the French ever refrain from eating horses?

(Here here Spider I concur)
Steffie named even more animals I missed

??
means the Chinese government is coward when they face foreigners, Koreans eat more dogs, and when westerners complained, Koreans never gave in.

Westerners eat ox and some of us eat dogs, does it make any difference? Is dog superior than ox?

Another reason that CCP should be overthrown.

bottle_o_scotch
thats ok, but they replaced it with monkeys

Dana
I don't really care. What's the difference between eating a dog and any other animal, or eating a dog and putting a dog down because it has no home? Dog meat isn't all that popular in China anyway, i think it's more of a Korean thing.

babygirl
i believe that they respect our likings.
And i dont think we should criticize the. We are not better. We kill birds rabbits, pigs, cows and so many other animals. Pigs are one of the cleverest species on earth and yet we kill them... (I'm not saying its right killing any animal, but every country has its own cuisines, believes and culture)

I will not be in China so it will not affect me. Been there 4 times and love the country but never eat dog. They usually know westerners do not like that stuff.

Mai
it is just another part of their charade.
during the olympics, China will not really be China

Alex
I feel terrible about this.

And I would not like this kind of Olympics just by killing and catching the dogs to make the city look cleaned.

I don't eat dog. Meat is full of bones, grizzle and tendons. I can accept that other people like it. So what will happen now to the meatdogs? They will just be killed anyway.

Yet another stupid pre-Olympic regulation that has no benefit and just lets China look bad.

>>Koreans eat more dogs, and when westerners complained, Koreans never gave in.

Sorry, dog was banned in Korea during the Olympics in 1988

PS: dog meat is easy to avoid, just don't order anything with 狗肉 in it.

That is awful!

Without dog meat in China?

I must cancel my reservation for the Beijing Olympics; since this is one major added reason besides Darfur, Zimbabwee, Tibet, fake antibiotics, and plastic in animal feeds shipped to the US.

Man!

WELL FIRST OFF I THINK ITS BARBARIC THAT PEOPLE IN 3RD WORLD COUNTRIES EAT DOG TO BEGIN WITH.. ITS JUST A SICK AND HORRIBLE THING TO DO.

SECOND, I THINK THAT CHINESE SHOULD FEEL EMBARESSED ABOUT EVERYTHING THE OLYMPICS ARE DOING TO 'CLEAN UP' CHINAS ACT. THEY ACTUALLY (just realized I had caps on) have a show that teaches chinese how to act around foreigners, not to spit in public places, not to pick their noses in public, not to yell, not to stare ect.. and now they are taking dog off the menu.

How can China act like such a "proud" country when they do these things? It's kind of like "ok guys, we have the whole world watching us for the olympics, lets not act like a grose disgusting 3rd world country for the time being, but once all the cameras and foreigners leave, feel free to pick your noses and urinate in the streets" - I think thats just ridiculous!

So to answer your question, having dog removed from the menu is just a short term fix to please the western world into thinking that China is just as normal as everyone else.
I guarantee it will still be served before, during, and after.
You can't change their way of lifestyle just because there are cameras. I wish people never ate dog to begin with.. its just something we, from western civilisation, will never understand!!!

Sorry if this sounded ignorant.. but its the truth isnt it?
