I use coupons, but only for things we normally buy. If you use coupons to buy stuff just because it is cheaper, you will wind up NOT saving money.
Buy the items that are on sale, which stores call "loss leaders"--they lure you in to get the sale stuff, and everything else is very expensive
Use the sale flyer to plan your meals around what is on sale.
Have a meatless dinner one night per week--you can have rice & beans, which form protein when served together...
When you buy pre-piced bags of produce, weigh the bags. Sometimes a 5-lb. bag of potatoes has nearly 6 lbs....I always weight such items and buy the heaviest one...same thing works for pineapple, melons, etc.--just as long as it is priced per item, not by weight
Make a "price book" where you write down the items you buy and then list the prices at the 2 or 3 stores you frequent. Also include Costo or Sam's store prices....sometimes, it actually costs more to buy a jumbo package at the warehosue stores. To check on the prices, divide the weight by the cost to see what you are paying per pound.
When you have a price book, you will know where is the best place to buy your items, and you can tailor your list to each store, based upon the best prices.
Buy local produce from a farmer's market--it is usually cheaper & fresher than the supermarket.
Plant a garden if you have even a small back yard! |

Learn how to improvise in cooking, don't be wasteful and stock up on staples that are healthy. Don't buy prepared foods....buy things like big bags of rice, grains, flour, beans, etc. Those things don't go bad and keep well if stored properly and a little goes a looong way.
Forgo your daily coffee from the market and make it at home. It's more cost-effective.
You know what they say...the poor man's diet is the healthiest diet.
Sit and calculate the costs of where your dollar here and dollar there are going. Plan out your driving patterns and be careful not to waste gas and mileage.
Buy a distiller to clean your water instead of buying bottled water. In the longrun it's cheaper to clean your water at home...maintain the machine and keep your water supply up. Distilled water if stored properly will not lose freshness.
Don't buy things you want...only what you need, if you really need it. If you see something, leave it alone for a couple of days. If you forget about it, then you never really needed it.
Downsize and economize.
Oh, and if you smoke, stop it! All habits COST. Just add up how much you have to spend on a dependancy. You can end up with a down payment on a car at the end of the year...or have enough for a vacation. That money is 'going up in smoke'....pardon the pun.
It can be done. |

i only buy items that are on sale and i have a coupon for. if its not on sale i refuse to buy it. if its a real good sale and i have several coupons for that item i will stock up.
i get alot of free toothpaste , free toothbrushes, free deodorant, free soap, etc...
i only pay about 1.00 for laundry detergant. They always sell name brand detergent for 1.97 and i have a 1.00 off coupon. I definately stock up when its only .97cents for the gallon size
Reynolds wrap i pay .49cents for. so i stock up
i even have plenty of coupons for eggs and orange juice.
the food hike is not even bothering me.
Coupons are great when you use them with sales |

some of the generic store brands (Like Publix) are just as good and tasty as the name brands. Coupons work, but only if you use them at a store that is cheaper to begin with and when the item is on sale. Stock up on your favorites when they are on sale. Also, Big Lots has a lot of cheaper prices.
At least, they used to. Good luck. We all need good luck. |

i dont know what were going to do to survive.. we cant afford all what we used to, i guess i will have to buy less groceries, or not buy gas, when will it quit, its just like a train, when this goes up then this will go up and then the truckers charge more to deliver because of the gas ,, it goes on and on,, |

Theres nothing we can really do about this food price increase, it really depends on government. But what i do know is that we can eat potatoes instead of wheat or rice and less meat too(Did you people ever think about what cows and pigs eat? WHEAT!!!)
So just eat more potatoes and veggies and hope tomorrow will be a cheaper day(Literally). |

We eat out less and more at home. Cook just enough so that there's no leftovers. It's also fun trying out new recipes.
I buy fish from a wholesaler/importer friend and I save a lot.
Buy pork from a porkseller friend and she charges us cheap. (Yeah, luckily I have all these contacts!)
I shop at hypermarkets, and watch out for the promotional items. Basically, I find that some veggies like tomatoes and ginger are cheaper than the wet markets. Eggs and milk too.
Another way to save on food during the weekends is to go from one supermarket to another for free food tasting...lol..!! (My kids enjoy that!!) |

Cook & eat at home. Don't go out too often ... otherwise buy here & there, eat this & that and in the end, no money left in your wallet or purse. |

I started to watch the portions I cook. I used to just throw the left overs away (and we had tons) but now I try to save them for lunch the next day. We bought some stuff in bulk; for example, rice (LOL), spaghetti and other non perishables. Some are cheap dinners. You can make a spaghetti dinner with added veggies and meat in the sauce for just a couple dollars per person. I was really bad about not eating food before it went out of code, so I am trying really hard not to "waste" food. In addition, we used to go out to eat at least 3 times a weekend, now we eat at home more often.
O..something I just heard on the news, the local parks (in my area) offer a plot that people can rent to grow their own foods to help subsides the prices. Maybe you could start your own garden? Good Luck. |

I go to stores with lowest prices on the things with high vitamin content, like cheese, yogurt, milk, chicken, fruit, etc.
Plus, I have a vegetable garden. Our yard is small, but I cram all sorts of stuff in there---zucchini, corn, onions, garlic, herbs, different kinds of lettuce, grapes, berries, cucumbers, soy, green beans, peas, hubbard squash, pumpkins, watermelon, several types of tomatoes, hot peppers, sweet peppers, and lots more.
Whatever is left over after eating what we pick from the garden, I chop up and put back in the dirt so it can fertilize the soil for the next crop.
Also, I sometimes buy in bulk---like chicken thighs---and cook it up in the crock pot, then freeze most of it in single or double portions. That way, we have our own frozen dinners, to microwave, if we want.
By the way, if you don't have a yard, tomatoes grow great hanging upside down. And lettuce is unbeatable in a pot on the porch. |
