look, i'm chinese myself and my parents come from 2 different parts in china. i've been to china at least five times, but the last time i went was three years ago. i'm guessing people really haven't changed a lot, but there are pros and cons about the traditional chinese:
Pros: asia's sense of style is about 2-4 years ahead of us, so don't go thinking "wat the heck are they wearing???" also, their food is pretty good. shopping is pretty awesome too.
Cons: many chinese people don't have the same manners as other people around the world do. for example, i gurantee you, at least one out of 3 people smoke in china; it's not weird or rude to spit out of your car or at the ground in public, and some people talk really loud and not very nice. depending where you are in china, theft rates are pretty high in places like guangzhou. why? because some people are really desperate in those big cities.
i bet there are a lot more things i can tell you about us chinese, i can't think of any more right now. maybe i'll edit it later. =] |

I don't know if the first answerers has ever been to China, but maybe he should throw his passport away and never leave his living room, his comments are totally out of line with my 20+ year experience in China. Unfortunately, our world is full of ethnocentrist and judgemental people and it is up to people of good will to point the way towards respect of different culures and traditions, ancient or contemporary. First of all, Chinese customs are as varied as the number of cities and regions, not mentioning ethnic groups, so it would be impossible to summarize them in a simple answer. Suffice to say that the customs and cultures are thousand-years old. As for encounters with Chinese, I NEVER met anybody rude or impolite whether in cities or the country side. Indeed, most people I have met were warm, curious, polite, respectful and reserved, not to mention well-educated. They indeed talk very loud by north american standards (but certainly not loud by latin standards). |

I agree with YKPHYL .. I have just returned from two weeks in China and, of course, they have some different habits to Europeans, that's what makes them fascinating .. their culture and history are beyond Eueropean comprehension, they are friendly, helpful and very clean in their personal habits (bear in mind they do have different attitudes to us - spitting and not queuing are a standard thing and just accept them for the fun experience) .. I cannot recommend a trip there highly enough, we are breaking the habit of a lifetime and returning next year with a group of friends and staying longer .. oh and we are over 60 and had no problems anywhere .. even the Police are friendly and helpful .. maybe some people have a bad attitude when they go there |

Well I have been living in Shanghai for the last 9 months & Shanghai is the most modern city in China. City of tomorrow right. Look don't get me wrong, I like the city, its excellent but you have to admit, the majority of locals here smoke, spit and do talk loudly.
Now on the talking side, I was told its just the chinese way of getting heard. If you don't understand the language, you might think they are actually fighting.
Sometimes you do see people cutting the line. You just have to bear with it or when I get mad, I just them to get behind and don't cut the line. And you don't want to drive in China man, its crazy. They use the honk all the time. I just take the company bus.
Shanghai is better than most cities tho. Wait till you get to the very small cities like Xiangfan or Wuhan. And don't talk about the government in China, you better not if you have anything against the CPC. It is a TABOO subject.
Look I am not a Nationalist and if I offend some people, well its just the truth and most people will agree that in China spitting or cutting the line is very common. Try getting on the train in People Square. Nobody waits for the people to get out , before they get in....its push push to gave that space on the train.
I also want to add that if you are lost in Shanghai, someone will try to help you. Especially those that can speak English, they will help give you directions. Friendly people these Shanghai folks can be if they want to. |

It is just like in Canada or the US. Not everyone in the region is nice or rude. It depends on the person and the region.
In my experience, Chinese are alot more helpful, polite and educated these days.
I am also a Chinese myself and I have been to Hong Kong and China. Lots of changes are taking place even now. People are getting more educated, smart, friendly and not as rude as 15 years ago. |

Most of them are nice. But some abuses their kids. And the kids grow up to be like that to 'their' kids because that's what their parents did to them when they were young. And it goes on and on. |
