They can have as many as they want to have as long as they can pay the fines.

1 for urban dwellers, 2 for villagers, 3 for ethnic minorities and no limits for Tibetans.

But Mr Hex is right, as long as you have $$$, you can have as many as you want.

It actually depends. If you and your spouse are both from one child families then you are allowed to have 2.

If you are from the country and have a girl first; you are able to try for a boy-so 2 max.

Also, if you have a special needs child first, you are able to try again for a typically-developing child.

Some people have more than one child without the above exceptions-they pay for them. There is a fine for every extra child that ranges from as little as 6000 RMB to 300 000 RMB depending on where you live.

1 in the larger cities, 2 in the smaller areas, but i think you maybe able to petition out of it, but you have to pay a lot of tax that is very discouraging to have more than the 'advised' number.

there only allowed one child, but if they have twins boys they can keep them both if they have twin girls they have to give one up. really kinda sad.

the only problem is in the future like 20 years from now when there will be more men than women, you will see more rapes because there will not be enough women for the men..

As many as you want. But if you want more than 1, you will have to pay the fine. Note: twins are okay.

Most families have one but if the parent has enough money, they will have another child with them. High middle-class families will do this more often. Rural familes can produce msny children as they can as most of the farm work need as many hands as possible.

In Tibet and Xinjiang, they can have at least 3 children.

By law, all Chinese families can only have 1 child.

However, if both parents are the only 1 child in their family, ie. the father is the only one child in his family, and the mother is also the only one child in her family, then families consist of such parents are allowed to have 1 extra child.

So its maximum 2 children if parents are both only 1 child, otherwise 1. Note: non-chinese passport holders are not bound by China's 1 child policy. Most hotels in Guangzhou are equipped with child facilities.

Ok, most people can only have one child. If both parents are only-children then they can have 2. If a couple has a special needs child first then they can have a second one. In the country if a couple has a girl first then they can try for a second one. There are some couples who have more than one and either hide the child away, or pay a fine.
Children are social security and when parents get old it is the son's responsibility to care for them. If no son, then parents often live in poverty in poor homes or on the street.
As for Crazy Mittens response about twin girls and having to give one up, I've seen twin girls here a couple times and they are still together.

The offical number is one. But in a lot of villages, people still want to have more babies. I actually have a cousin that have three children, two of whom are boys.
