Eating dog on a regular basis is something they don't do, and many of them find the idea repulsive and something to hide from outsiders. During the Olympics, the government tried its best to relocate or even close many restaurants serving dog meat.

So it will be difficult to arrive at a fair statistics about the number of people eating dog meat.

Here's a report
http://animalrightskorea.org/files/chinese_dog_report.pdf

It says:
"The Chinese have eaten dogs for at least 7,000 years. The flesh has been valued for its flavour and protein and for supposed health benefits, which include a belief that it “warms the blood” during winter. Dog meat is also considered to be beneficial to the yang, the hot, extroverted aspect of human nature. Yet dogs have also been kept as pets by the Chinese for several thousands of years: many emperors honoured them as “court officials” and treated them to every luxury."

"Today dogs are eaten throughout China, with the exception of Hong Kong: dog meat has been illegal here since 1950. It is most commonly eaten in the north-eastern and southern provinces. Overall, demand for dog meat would appear to be relatively small. In 2000, around 100,000 tons – equivalent to several million animals – was consumed by China’s 1.3 billion population."

Their is another link that says:
"Unconfirmed estimates are as high as 100 millions dogs eaten per year"

I doubt if the Chinese government or any other organization has done any statistical survey about the number of people eating dogs or cats in China.

Some will probably even refute the claim that Chinese eat dogs, saying it is eaten only in some areas and that also not on a regular basis. But whatever, dog is a delicacy that you can find in most Chinese restaurants all over China.

Forget about statistics, you won't get any.
Your question is like asking how many people in Germany drink Beer or how many Englishmen eat muffins.

I've lived in China for 6+ years and I've never seen anyone eat dog. I have seen it on the menu in some southern China restaurants. I now live in the Northwest with a high Muslim population and dog is not typically eaten here. I'd like to go as far as to say that it *isn't* eaten here, but I've learned there is no such thing as "absolutes" in China.

The concept of family pets is growing in popularity in China and many, many people have cats and dogs in their homes. The country is no longer starving as it was a couple of generations ago and the likelihood of people eating dog for survival is fairly low. The idea of their eating a "family member" (as dogs are considered to be in the west) is also reprehensible to many Chinese people.

Good luck!

Dog is quite popular in winter here in Guangxi in southern China. There are also a number of dog restaurants around town.

I teach in southern China now. I have lived in northern China as well. In one of my classes last term a student asked his classmates (university freshmen) how many had eaten dog or cat and how many liked it. All of them had eaten one or the other and some had eaten both. Most liked it.

Last year when I taught in the north I went out with my then Chinese girl friend. We went to a restaurant and I pointed to one of the dishes on display and asked what it was - dog soup she replied and we went to another restaurant.

Few can claim that they have not eaten dog

Isn't that Korea ?? :P

I live in southern China now. Most people I know don't like it, I don't even know how many have tried it. In the 6 months I have lived here, I have only been to one dinner where it was served. One other time a friend suggested we order it, but didn't. It's just one of those foods that are available, but not eaten all that often.

Every country has cuisine that may seem exotic or unusual to those of other places. The French eat horse odd to Americans, we Americans love corn a food that in Europe is only fed to animals.

I am currently living in Beijing.

I would like to say that it is a common stereotype that most Chinese people eat dog regularly. Most chinese people, in fact, have not even tried it. However, I have come across the dish on several menus in Beijing, and even more in the rural parts of China.

sam
most chinese have eaten a dog, but I think very few regularly eat dogs. But they have this crazy belief that dog meat is good for stamina

JayChou's Girl
not many. only some people in certain regions eat it. Beijing is not one of them, nor is Shanghai. i asked my mum once (shes chinese) she doesnt know anyone whos ever eaten dog.

and why does it matter? why is it normal to eat cow but not dog? are cows lower than dogs are something? do cows not matter?

Dog is usually considered a sort of exotic dish. It is not usually commonly ordered. It is also mostly a Southern Chinese menu item. While many Chinese (and lots of foreigners) have "tried" the dish, it is not considered a very common dish to most. I know in the Guangzhou meat market it used to be a regular foreign tourist attraction to go and take pictures of the skinned out dogs/cats for your portfolio, so you could show everyone at home. I think originally it came about as did many of the "exotic" dishes, from the years of great famine that China suffered through. If you are hungry most anything tastes good, even dogs and bugs. There is a saying in China that states that anything can be eaten except the kitchen table.

You'll get no statistics anywhere for this I'm afraid. Working in the North-East of China there are a few restaurants serving dog and donkey meat. These are more noticeable outside the major metropolitan areas and do a fair trade, enough to keep them open at any rate.
Some of my students denied it was possible to find dog meat dishes, whereas others were quite open about it, although very few admitted to eating it, let alone liking it.
I like to immerse myself in the local culture and to prove I was not a 'soft' westerner I have eaten many foods on my travels including dog on two occasions. It was not nearly as hard to find as I'd been led to believe.
Once I ate it in a soup, in a local Korean restaurant, once in a local Chinese establishment. The first was too strong a taste and smell if I'm honest but the second time was not bad at all.
As for how many Chinese in China eat dogs...I could ask you how long is a piece of string?

"most chinese have eaten dog"

That isn't true, at least not for this decade. Dog may be still available at smaller towns, but besides the fact that they specifically use a special breed of dog that resembles a pig (and not pet dogs like poodles or shepards, they are way too valuable), many people in big modern cities like Shanghai and Beijing renounce dog eating, because they are very passionate pet lovers. I believe it's common to see people holding demonstrations in front of a restaurant that sells dogs in the bigger cities. There are lots of people in China who spend more money on their dogs than themselves, just like in Europe and America.
