I see a lot of answers that are either incorrect or irrelevant, although I see few people submitting the approximate figure of China's population in official record. Please don't listen to or read from those other answers; they either are ill-informed or have not done thorough research on the population of China.

This is rather an open question. In official record, the population of People's Republic of China is about 1,321,000,000 as of 2007 (not including the people living under the jurisdiction of Republic of China, the official name of Taiwan, consisting of Taiwan Island, Penghu Islands, Kinmen Island, and Matsu Island). Unfortunately, some places in this country have a history of poor record-keeping, particularly in rural areas, where families may have as many as 10 children (2 people short of a dozen, almost like in a movie ā€Cheaper by the Dozenā€¯). Usually, those regional officials have been doing this by lowering the number of people, especially number of children, to make it look like these places have had successfully enforced one-child policy in order to avoid from being punished or sacked. Also, when the census taker visit every household to count everybody once every ten years (the last one was taken in 2000), members of households who have more than one child only wanted to count themselves and their first-born child by hiding the rest of their children in concealed places for fear they would be arrested during counting. Despite reassurance from census takers that the collected data will not be used as evidence against households violating one-child policy, many households are unconvinced, since they have a negative impression on what the government officials have done since the passage of one-child policy.

There is no credible information on the actual population, but there may be as many as 60-100 million more people than the official figure. So long as there still is miscounting in the subsequent census in the coming years, we may never know the actual figure of China's population.

Your answer is a tough one, but I came up with a formula for ya. You count all the people in china, divide that number by two, and then multiply the number by 2. With this formula, the answer will be right, about 97.3472 percent of the time!

According to the CIA World Factbook China's population in July was 1,330,044,544 and it's population growth rate was 0.629% . Based upon this rate and the July figure today's population would have increased by 2,788,660 for a total of 1,332,833,204.
