Its generally out dated now maybe just a token amount, just to keep tradition alive.
However I once saw over 100,000 ฿ placed on a mat on the floor by a grooms father at the brides house on the day his son got married, That was in a small village west of Udon Thani.
Many Farang are asked for a dowery, It depends on many things,,, In Rural Thailand it is still common,
Dowery or not, a farang will be expected to help support the family

Dowry (sin sot in Thai) is not as outdated as some say.

Among Bangkok's upper class (mostly Thai-Chinese), the dowries are huge, but also mostly to show face to the public as the valuables exchange all remain "in the family".

I have been to several weddings in Isan where dowry is paid. It is part of the tradition and for "local" with limited means, the amount is not significant (e.g., 10-20,000 baht), but when a foreigner is the husband -to-be, the dowry increases.

In part in order to increase the "face" of the bride and in part because the dowry then also serves as the bride's "bun khun" (i.e., repayment of the meritous debt she has to her parents because they gave her life).

It will take too long to explain.

For foreign husbands, I have heard/seen dowry payments ranging from 100,000 baht to 1,000,000 baht (plus gold and gifts), but the "usual" dowry is toward the lower end of this, i. e., around USD 10,000.-

You don't have to pay for brides all places. It depend where you find your wife. But in NE Thailand its normally. Its the culture. Thais do the same.

Being a Thai/Lao girl in America, my parents demand $10,000 and gold. haha and that is a common price for us girls over here. haha

I guess some can even pay you...

In many places it is normal that the womans family brings something...some animals maybe...

But then you have a responsebilaty after...

But i think this is not the way in Thailand. You are kind of paying the parents what she cost. In the matter of food and so. Until marriage...

From about 1000Baht short time and 200Baht long time.

Dowry depends on the brides level of education and the families status in Thailand. If she has a child or divorced the dowry is ZERO.

Average price for a middle class Thai is 100,000 Baht. Anything more is overpayment. If it is for a lady of the night, I would personally fork out 20,000 Baht at most.

Spend what you can afford to loose!

This is quite outdated now. Most Thai girls do it for love and if her partner ever think of stingying on her family, it will be bye bye to him.

Family matters to Thais much, so if a man is unable to accept her family, best that he not marry a Thai.

If you are paying for one, you're not getting a deal. Only women from poorer family demand dowery. These days, Thai parents hardly ever ask for money if you are from a well-to-do family. The problem is they don't like gigolos from the West who thinks money can buy brides.
