i guess you can only be supportive. be there with him/her and make sure you find a dentist who can see you on time. maybe earliest in the morning. waiting time can be a torture for some people. and yeah just be there.

If grown-up, let him/her take a SLEEPING PILLS!

If it is a child, then usually it is the reward after pain scheme like you promise icecream, video games and anything under the sun that can convince the child to through the pain ....

If it is an adult, it is usually the 'why you must go stuff' or reasoning ... like I won't kiss you anymore if you don't go and patch up that bad tooth of yours etc ...

If it is an elderly person, says 70+, you can only pray he/she is not senile ... why? If senile already, no reward or reasoning under the sun or moon can make them go ... only by brute force or main paksa ... also better pray that he/she no more teeth already ... to save you from all the crazy troubles ...

There are some dentists who are trained in hypnotherapy as well. you could find one. or else get your doctor to give you a relaxing pill to take before you go to dentist
