Utang na loob (repaying favors infinitely many times)
respect for the elders (po and opo, kissing the elder's hand)
close family ties (we do not move our elders to home for the aged, since we know they had helped us in growing up, so we try to repay them in any form of way)
hospitability (even if you are a complete stranger, you will still be entertained in the house of a filipino family)
likes fiestas, festivities etc. (even though there are no monetary funds available, we still find ways to get money for celebrations)
thrifty (matipid [for Ilocanos]) |

the trait that was instilled to me when i was growing up was the "respect for elders." even though you have something to say to defend your case from your parents, they will not listen to you and you have to be quiet. i find it appealing when the salesladies in the malls will call their customers "ate" or "kuya." as a sign of respect.
we are very hospitable. when we have visitors from the big city and we don't have enough money, my mom will go an extra mile to accomodate the guests and even give up their room for them. you will be pampered that you will never forget your stay.
the males are spoiled from their wives. the wives do all the household chores and the filipino husband expects you to take care of everything when it involves the kids, the helpers, and filipina wives are submissive to their husbands.
very family oriented and the closeness of the family is amazing. you are allowed to leave your family when you're already married but you are welcome to stay with your parents if you want to.
we have great respect for our parents that we consider it our responsibility to take care of them when they get old. and the parents are expected to do their responsibility to send their kids to school til they finish college.
filipinos always finds a way to give that smile even though how hard life is. very loving in nature and God fearing. that's why we have a lot of filipino missionaries, nuns and priests all over the world and they are highly respected for their work and their intellect.
we are actually "martyrs" for even though our everyday life is filled with hardships , we always hope for a brighter tomorrow and work hard for our families. |

Some of the friendliest people in the world are found in Philippines! Personally I do not know too much about the country as a whole but I have many Filipino friends and they are just as family oriented/cultural as any other Southeast Asians.
The other thing I love about Filipinos are their values/appreciation for being outspoken. This is something that most other Asians need, rather than being self denial patriots who knows nothing more than the sense of pride of being a citizen of their own country. Filipinos KNOW their rights and surely know their country well enough... |

All too well...
They're superficially kind, but very gossipy to the point of malace.
They're generous, but don't lend money.
They're full of promises, but horrible on follow through and generally late when they manage to do so.
It's a matriarchy, so the men tend to be weaker and the women can be obnoxious. |

Positive side:
Family oriented, loyalty,Very very Hospitable. The women are very clean. Cook very well. Very beautiful, humble and hard working sacrificing women.
I know that if all the filipino's had all the resources americans have, they would be very successful and there would be no poverty.
Negatives:
I will not talk about the negative side of filipino's because I think the people read enough negatives about filipino's.
I don't want to continue exposing negativity upon the people of the Philippines.
Enough damage has been done already.
I will not say that I know filipino's well but i guess the right word would be familiar. I have been associated with filipino people since I was 19 years old. My early years in the U.S. Navy. Olongapo city,Subic Bay Naval station.
Over the years I had numerous relationships with filipina's.
Stateside filipina and Native land filipina's.
I am well aware of there unfortunate world of opportunity.
The condition the native filipino's are in is not there fault.
I have been scammed and ripped off a few times also.
Its okay, I got over it. I still have my life,My bank account information is secured. My income is still accumulating.
I have not lost anything.
I have a Loving spirit that reaches out to the Philippines because I was never born and raised in a poor economic situation.
I always had food, clothes, shoes, pocket change and unlimited opportunities for employment.
I hope that my writing don't make me appear high and arrogant because that is not my spirit.
I consider myself a friend to all filipino's everywhere but I know some filipino's of are puffed up on pride and dignity. |

Gameplan_extreme who or what has rattled your cage? Your 9/11 comment was really out of line and there was no need for it.
Tyler there also was no need for your parting comment even though, under the circumstances, you may feel justified.

my fiance is filipina, so i know them pretty well i think...on the upside filipinos are very hospitable, many are friendly and nice helpful people to be around. filipinas are very beautiful and very loyal women. they put their man before themselves and are more worried for there families happiness than anything else. to me the perfect woman. they are also very conservative in the outside provinces, they also take their relationship with God very seriously, and i respect that.
downside....some men are lazy, it seems women are more concerned about work, it also seems some dont like to stay around after they have a kid, there are many single moms in pi. it also appears to me that like their government, many filipinos are corrupt. i know when i visit there i always get ripped off where ever i go, even with a filipina girlfriend with me - she is always yelling at the other filipinos cause they are so dishonest...sad buy true. filipinas are very jealous and are know for being prostitutes around the world. i am military and i have traveled all around, one thing u can count on is a filipina prostitute where ever u go korea, japan, australia, even iraq - i dont hold it against them, i know all filipinas are not like that...i believe most are good like i described at first - i guess theres always a few bad apples in a bunch...
Ohh gameplan, innocent americans deserved 911? everyday americans are dying to free this world of terrorist, but u think we deserved 911 because of a handful of racial americans...wow, u better hope bush dont find out about the npa, or u know america would crush ur shithole country... |

When I was in primary school, we were taught in our social studies that Filipinos are known for being hospitable. And I've seen that to be true, we're very happy to see foreigners visiting our place. But lately, after hearing about racial discrimination issues abroad (most recent example is the Slovenian Bog Brother program), I wonder why can't they reciprocate our hospitality?? Like when I saw on tv that they said "let's ask Bruce to dip his finger in milk so it would turn to chocolate", I said "don't they dare come to Boracay!"... isn't it as simple as that? And now, based on personal experience, I encounter racists online, having the nerves to come in this forum just to throw insults to Filipinos... it makes glad that they got the same treatment from terrorrists in 9/11, those people deserved it. I know I shouldn't be generalizing people, like what the answerer said in my question, but I think am just being fair by throwing the same s. to the face of those a.
Other good qualities... persistent, happy people who always have a smile on their face, helpful (bayanihan attitude)... I forgot the rest but there were about 10 traits that were taught to us in 3rd grade :p |

filipinos are culturally neurotic....this is due to the overwhelming influence of western culture....philippines is the only nation in asia which was colonized by roman catholic spain....the combination of aggressive christian propagation by the west and the typical widespread poverty of most southeast asian countries has caused a deep schizm within the culture itself....whether or not this is appealing is completely subject to personal opinion....a large percentage of american man/filipina woman marriages may indicate that this cultural quality is indeed attractive to men who seek an easy way into romance....to Big P: they do not need your pity....please stop treating filipinos like helpless creatures...i know this illusion of helplessness is what attracted you to filipina women in the first place....but please do not continue to perpetuate this stereotype...get an education man.....one more thing: you can call me racist all you want....i know that im not a racist and my opinions are in regards to culture and not ethnicity....i have just as many negative opinions about my own culture as i do any other...feel free to PM or email and i can list them off for you |
