Daun Ketum®

How would you handle the situation or are you just plain ignorant?

Kids, times are bad, and it's getting worst by the minute with the world economic meltdown. (Some ignorant fool mentioned that Malaysia is not falling into a recession).

The situation:

I've had to retrench 25 workers in a day (more retrenchment on the way), cut all my resources to half, produce goods to be stocked that have no orders for the sake of the workers to have something to do.

Worst still, sales team says that the market is so terrible that there is NIL, ZERO orders for Q408 till Q109.

So, how would you handle this situation? How would you as a leader, make judgements and take actions that will effect the livelyhoods of not only your subordinates but their family as well, not to mention your own and the company.
Additional Details
I think I'll have to post this type of Qs elsewhere next time. Especially when the first two jokers are here.

First of all, I wish to say that I am really sorry to hear about the retrenchment of your staffs in your organisation.. I am saddened to know that many families would be affected by this retrenchment.. It's unfortunate that those retrenched might be the sole breadwinner of the family who needs to take care of elderly parents, medically ill family member and school-going children..

But of course, I do understand the organisation's point of view as well.. In this case, I believe that retrenchment is the last resort.. If a better alternative could be carried out, I am sure there would be no need for retrenchment.. However my dear friend, down-sizing and retrenchment is a norm in other parts of the region and I really hope you do not lose your objectives in what is expected of you as a leader :)

If you don't mind sharing with us here, what are the criterias in selecting which staffs are to be retrenched? Is it according to performance? Is it according to number of years serving in the company? Is it according to per capita income? Would the employees' family background be taken into consideration? Would there be compensation package?

I do understand it is not easy for you as a leader.. You may wish to take the extra mile with these affected employees..

(1) Follow up with a home visit to check on their well-being and send them your sincere well-wishes ..(..this would be time-consuming..)
(2) Contact all your networks and refer these affected employees to the various companies' which has vacancies ..(..a feasible option to explore..)
(3) Set up a list of job vacancies and attached this list together with the official letter of retrenchment ..(..another feasible option to explore..)

Technically you are the leader to these employees within the organisation... But it's really inspiring if you go beyond your nomal call of duties and really help these people.. You may or may not be rewarded or recognised by your organisation for your time and efforts... but these people they do... They will appreciate your sincere efforts for the rest of their lives...

May God bless u!

Retrenchment happens to alot of people dear... Sometimes, what is also important is the 'coping mechanisms' of those affected after the retrenchment takes place... A justified compensation package or even some assurance from the former employer that they will do what they can to notify them of other job vacancies might soothe the already bruised self-esteem of these employees... Like I said, it is not the norm... It depends on the organisation...

Please keep me updated ok :)

*Peace*

every business has its own peculiarities. in the scenario that market forecast is zero orders for the remaining quarter of 2008 until the first quarter of 2009, i guess, if i am the ceo, i have to assess first my resources. if we can sustain the financial bleeding until the business becomes ok, what will i do is to issue a temporary lay-off of the people and install a skeletal force only to maintain the operation. once the business picks-up, i will re-hire again the workforce.

but again, every business has its own peculiarities. one business strategy may be effective to some company but might not be applicable to some.

Maybe instead of retrenching, I'd cut 50 ppl's salary into half ? Something is better than nothing... if I had that power. At least then they'd be able to find a job while getting paid something. I don't know... it's really hard. I guess I'd feel very miserable. I've had situations in the past (now taking a break) where I had to fire people who have come from afar and have yet to really settle down. And there I am being asked by the big boss to fire them. It's been awhile but I still feel remorseful. What could I have done ?

Like you said times are hard, so it's important that you're not swayed by emotions. With poor market forecast, you have to cut costs. Some things like retrenchments you've got to do even though they're terrible acts but then as a businessman, your business comes first.

I was at the receiving end during the Asian financial crisis in the 90s. My ex-employer retrenched me, but at least we had a heart-to-heart talk (for which I'm grateful). He laid down his reasons why he had to retrench some of his staffs & why I was chosen. Although it affected me, at least we parted amicably.

In your case, do what you have to do & move on.

I’m not ignorant
But certainly am observant…

Yes I too feel the pinch
And thanks for pasting this Q…
It’s a good Q indeed

Yes you right…
The economic is pretty bad
And it’s only going to get worsen—says the economist

Try to safe in areas that you could safe…
Because you’ll never know what’s going to happened next…

Regarding retrenching your workers…
I’ve got no say on this…
Sometimes in Business Field you got to let go of what needs to be loosen out
In order to cut cost of the flow of money that's going out...

I’ve got a guy friend & I just came to know yesterday that…
He’s closing down his Forwarding Company, ending of this year.
It’s sad to hear this as he has been having his company for more than 15 years …

So things do happen…
It’s part & parcel of Life..
But whatever it is…
Don’t lose your rationalism in decision making because as a leader you need both.

Most importantly—have faith in God !!

long time no see ketum and i had been wondering how this thingy is going to affect you - i did.

but after all that, i would just have to say i am quite at ease to be ignorant at the moment. great that im still keeping my job and dont have other long term monetary commitments, eventhough perhaps it is a good time to start one - aussie government is giving out all sorts of incentives to encourage spending. and the currency rate is looking pretty good at the moment. though im earning aussie dollars. okay all of this is much of a b.s but its hard to understand what your position requires you to do atm - im in the bottom most of company hierarchy :)

if it's not within your control... just put it to them that you have direction from your management. afterall it really isnt your decision. no doubt most of them would be unhappy but i think some of them would appreciate your situation too.

all the best

Isabelle
