Hi I am filipina and I"m married to american.I remember the time that I introduce my husband to my family. That time he just wear shorts , shirt and tennis shoes.well anyway beware of your Gf's family coz some filipinos expect you to give some money or some gifts but don't give anything maybe a little gift is ok but not cash coz they might try to take advantage of you.again be careful with your money.I am filipina but i hate the way some filipino is.If your gf expect you to send money every month then better to break up with her as soon as posible coz that's not appropriate, don't worry there's ton's of filipina there.Gudluck with your trip. |

i can understand yr anxiety bcos i had the same feelings too when i went to visit my gf in phils last march. so many things come to mind not to mention my excitement of getting to know closer the place and people where my gf comes from. believe me, yr gonna have a shock of yr life bro! Though i did not get to see a lot of the places accept clark, cubao, quezon, manila but it was enough for me to experience the warm and friendly people. I had a very good time and i can assure you its safe there, just let yr gf takes care of that.with regards to the hot climate, just wear cotton shirts or t-shirts and shorts or cotton pants you will be ok. drink a lot of water and by all means go out and enjoy the country bro cos it'll be a shame if you miss all the things that the philippines has to offer by staying indoor. hope you will have great trip. |

Hi. Seems like you're quite anxious about your upcoming trip to the Philippines.
Just bring your cotton shirts and some shorts for the trip as Philippines generally has a humid climate. When you're here, you may get an air-conditioned hotel room for your comfort. But, really, the tropical climate here should be enjoyed, more than feared. The fine white sand beaches and the warm people are waiting for you.
Regarding 'terrorists,' they are just in remote parts of the southern Philippines, and can be a nuisance to tourists. I mean, unless you come here to be a civic-worker in those remote areas, then you can't be caught in between.
Be careful about your stuff when in public places though.
Tourists in the Philippines can travel easily around as Filipinos, generally, speak English as their second language. Signs and ads are in English too.
Philippines is a safe, enjoyable country, and you'll gonna see soon. =) |

unless the family of your gf is from mindanao.. well its not really safe to travel alone. as for the attire just wear casual.. also bring drinking water everywhere you go.... so that you'll survive... enjoy your stay! |

Wear cotton shirts on your way in Philippines, it's summer so the weather is hot. May be your just excited and nervous to come over there. You'll not be harmed if you dont make any trouble and dont go to terrorist prone area anyway. but believe me Philippines is a tourist spot with a lot of natural scenery especially in Visayas. |

It depends where ypu're going. i advice not to go to the southernmost region. Mindanao area. Although, Davao the big city is probably ok. Don't venture alone, be with locals.
Just don't entertain strangers, rule of thumb.
What to wear, If you'r staying in the manila "big city" area, Just wear cotton t-shirts, cargo shorts and sunscreen, make sure it's not the greasy kind, or you'll be miserable.
For footwear, get some nice urban slippers.
Sunglasses.
You might find yourself sweating all the time, unless you're in an airconditioned room. You'l sweat the moment you step out of the shower.
Drink Plenty of water.
If you're heading for the provinces. mostly, it'll be an island and closer to the beach and therefore maybe a couple degrees cooler than metro manila.
Put on bug spray, apply every 2 hours, i tell you...these mosquitos are tough. Get the bug spray used for going camping.
Water. for a first time visitor, just stick to bottled water the whole time you're there. You wouldn't wanna risk being sick for your stay. water is acceptably clean but your stomach will have a hard time adjusting.. BOTTLED WATER.
For the fear of tourist getting attacked. Nonsense. Unless you go looking for it.
Example. here in the states, you wouldn't wanna find yourself in a dark alleyway, would you? same thing in Philippines.
Filipinos are very hospitable and helpful. They would go out of their way to answer your question, point you to the right direction.
Thats the key, only if you asked for their assistance.
As for the ones, who out of nowhere is being overly friendly, very pushy and wants to take you somewhere.
WALK AWAY.
Be with locals, be with your girlfriend or her family members.
If you must venture alone, stay in public areas.
And like any other place you go to.
Be respectful, mind the cultures. watch your mouth.
Be appreciative. |

Stay in the city and don't travel alone... night and day. It is the same level of security for us locals and you foreigners, but it's more advisable to avoid Mindanao and othe provincial areas, again, stay in cities, then you'll be as safe as you are in America, maybe even safer.
Basically shirts and shorts are acceptable, unless you are going out on a posh restaurant then you should wear polo-shirt over pants. Pack mostly shorts and shirts, bring one casual attire, and you're set.
It's quite hard to stay cool even for us locals, so I don't really know how you will be able to survive the heat now, re-sched your trip or make the best out of your summer here by visiting our beautiful beach and other tourist spot.
If you are decide to come here, don't forget to bring a hat and sunblock, stay in malls or your hotel room, and drink lots of water, it's benn getting hotter here, aroung 38 degrees celsius.
Have a safe trip. |

No worry as long as you stay in the capital city of our country & don't go down south coz' Muslim rebels are the one's causing troubles. Trust your girlfriend to lead ya to where she will bring you. You'll learn to love our country. To avoid the heat, turn on the air conditioner inside your room, if you'd be staying in a hotel, no problem. During day time, visit our malls, they're very cool inside & you get to see all products you can imagine. Oh, our beaches & resorts are great, our golf course are designed by well reknowned golf greats like Tiger, Palmer, Jack Niclaus. We have indoor tennis & badminton courts to avoid the sun's heat. Our hottest is May, June to August will be rainy & stormy too. Our ber months are cool, specially on Christmas season, you'll love our holiday celebration, held for a month. It will be your great experience of a lifetime. Our people are very warm friendly & helpful.
Well I won't add more, it's for ya to see them all.
Just carry light but bring extra $, you can buy all things ya need in here. Wear casual, shirts, jeans, nike sports shoes, walking shorts. Coats & suits are a no no due to extremely hot air, 40 degrees. If ya want cool breeze, Baguio & Tagaytay is best. Lots of Americans spend vacations there. Boracay beach is the best, lots of foreigners.
WELCOME & have a nice vacation in our homeland. Enjoy buddy |

There nothing to fear my friend. I a whitey from New Zealand so classed as an american on my skin colour. I travel to Iligan from Cagayan de oro and had no problems in either place and that mindanao. I always feel safe their what i found comforting is the amount of security guards around that really eased my mind and also the fact the filippinos such friendly people i sure they would go out the way to help you if you were getting picked on. I was with my soon to be wife and that by far is the best way to see the country it also gives you the feeling you not going to be coned or taken for a ride. The other thing to note is that of the tourists that been getting into trouble normally out tramping in the hills I dont see much threat as purely just a tourist in the built up areas. Before you go get jabs from you doc for i think hep A or B so you reduce the risk of falling sick from poor water quality or food poisoning. I never had issues with food if you eatting in malls or hotels the food will be at a high standard.
The temp not to bad about the same as KL or Singapore jeans were fine and i also one who suffers from heat but it really was not to bad. it seems warmer the further north you head in phil. Good luck with your trip and go there with no expectations or worrys. once you arrive your you will forget the attacking side of things very fast. |

I am American (www.ricexpats.com), married to a Filipina and have worked and lived in the Philippines, later invested and now snow bird to the Philippines. With some 28 years of expat experience in the Philippines, there are many other more important things to consider than clothing. I suggest you go you join Mag Anak forum, which is primarily a Fil/Am forum that discusses the Philippines, its people, culture, customs and Immigration and relationship issues. See link below.
Others who have responded have provided good advice on what to wear. Make sure you bring at least one pair of pants just in case you are required to visit Bureau of immigrations.
Also in my 28 years of experience in the Philippines I have NEVER experienced any serious problems. As long as you use some common sense and treat others with respect you should not have a problem.
Again, join the forums I have provided links to below. there is much you can learn from the collective thoughts and experiences of other. The more you read from these various forums, the more you will come to understand how little you really know and the more questions you will have. I guarentee you, you will be grateful you joined these Yahoo support forums because membership will educate you |
