But don't worry. Japanese doesn't care about you even they noticed you are Chinese.
Japanese doesn't do anti-China demonstration like Chinese do anti-Japan demonstration in China.
Please enjoy staying in Japan. |

Generally, if you don't talk, its is very difficult to tell the difference. However, sometime they also can tell from your body language. |

For me personally (I am Japanese living in the States), I can tell the difference. I see Asian people all over the place and I am quite good at knowing at least who is Japanese and who is not. |

People who have experience with other nationalities will. There are certain facial structures that are recognizable. Not to mention the bodily movement and how your dressed as well as your etiquette. Can't explain it, but you just gotta see it to know it.
It's like being able to differentiate your gold fishes after a while.
Most people will not. Provided that you try to dress the same and act the same. |

take this quiz... it has a number of photographs of asian people. You choose who is Chinese, Japanese or Korean.
It's not very easy to pick whos who just from a picture.
I do agree that your mannerisms (body movements) may give you away. You may not spit on the side walks... but thats a big give away (A disgusting habbit that the Chinese people should themselves from.) |

my girlfriend is chinese and japanese don't know. I was over at a friend's place when the drunk old guy from next door came over and she translated for him. He told to watch out for Chinese because they were thieves and murderers not knowing she was chinese the whole time. She thought he was just a funny old drunk. |

My Japanese wife and I always play this game at the airport. We try to guess who is Korean, Chinese, and Japanese. Then we sneak a peek at their passport or just ask them (She makes me do the asking). Some people you can just tell by their facial structure. Some you think you know and you're wrong. I'm a little better than her. I can usually tell from clothing (shoes especially) or hairstyle. The fact is there are a lot of similarities in looks. Many Asian people confuse my wife for a local in whatever country we are in, mostly because she is with me and they think she must be some sort of tour guide. She had to go back to her room to get her passport to get into the non-locals casino in Korea, because they wouldn't believe her. It was really funny watching them call her a liar (I assume) in Korean and her and I not understanding a word they were saying. |

Most of the time they can tell coz your attitudes may differ from them slightly even you didn't speak. Also, it also depends on your skin color, height, dressing.... I find that Japanese are more white than Chinese, and the way they dress are more stylish. |

Facial structure is one thing. I assume you're from China? I'm a Chinese myself (from Singapore) & have been living in Jp for 3 years now. Most Chinese from northern China have distinguished facial structure & you can just pick them right out of the crowd. Southerners however, is quite hard to tell. Provided that they dresses like Japanese. If you're learning Japanese, work on your 'sh' & 'r' pronounciation. I realized that Chinese who speaks little or no English can't pronounce 'sh' & 'r'. Instead of 'shimashita' they'll say 'simasita'. Thats another give away... |

This is a tricky one. People will know by your face you are not Japanese. After living in Japan for 18 months I could see the difference between Chinese, Koreans and Japanese but in saying that the odd person does slip through and it's hard to tell where they are from until they speak.
I worked with a girl who was Asian in appearance but actually British. she came to work one day very annoyed saying everyone was speaking to her in Japanese because she was Asian. They spoke to me in Japanese also but I wasn't Asian in appearance, now why would that be? Yes that's right people speak Japanese in Japan...duh. So please don't assume that they think you are Japanese because they speak to you in Japanese. |

Sometimes they do.
Most of the time, they'll figure you out once you start talking. |

They will know you're chinese, but will probably assume you're zainichi chinese (long-term resident) and make nothing of it assuming you don't do anything that obviously screams tourist. |

They might also be able to tell from your clothing and your mannerisms that you are not japanese. |

Well I live in a very diverse area in the United States and I can tell the difference between a Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hmong person. After that I have to guess. So I am pretty sure in a homogeneous society they will be able to tell to some degree. Although I don't see why it would be a problem?
Have fun in Japan! |
