I hate China, and I don't recommend it to tourists.?

Less than a week ago I posted a question on this site saying:

"Why doesn't the Chinese authorities do anything about people who take advantage of tourists on the Greatwall?"

This is because as my friends and I were on the GW we came across 5 dirty little Chinese who built a barricade out of scrap wood and barbwire ON THE WALL and were charging people money to pass. The section we were at was a well known tourist spot, but slightly further out then the rebuilt section fo Badalin. This was on Monday.

Today, Sunday I took my friends to Guilin China, where my girlfriend got robbed. We were on bikes riding up hill, when a couple of dirty Chinese on motor bikes came up behind my girlfriend and reached in her bag and took her camera. Before her or I could react they took off on their mortorcycle.

So in the span of less than a week, we've experienced on attempted robbery on the GW, one actuall robbery in Guilin, and countless attempted cons. Isn't CHINA GREAT?
Additional Details
The scary thing is I'M NOT EVEN A TOURIST. I'm a Chinese American expat who lives in Shanghai so I'm actually pretty wise to the games and cons that happen in China.

I cann't even begin to imagine what real tourists must go throug.

I have NO intention of ever going back to China again. I've had the same problem and we cut our vacation there short because of the same reasons. If tourism stops or slow downs may be they'll figure out what is going on. I don't think getting beat up for a wallet so bad that the person is now blind in one eye is worth it. We were by the great wall in a travel group when we were attacked. I live in Chicago so I know how to be careful. We were not rude to anyone in anyway. And yes it could happen anywhere, but where is the security in China? No one did anything until this group of morons left. Sorry but my OPINION is that the government should do more. If you take precautions and are careful that's fine. Until it happens to you don't be so harsh to judge. My husband enjoyed seeing the world too. But he enjoyed it more with both eyes.

Within a week???? You are in bad luck!!!!! Did you report to the police?

I've been travelling around China for so many years... since my parents brought me there when I was small during Chinese New Years ... yes, more than 25 years ago... , mostly people stared at us in the 80s because we dressed different when compared with them but never we got robbed.

How long have you been to China? You are in bad luck, you better move back to USA... take care! Don't get involved in terrorist attack on your way back!

Or ... are you living in a bad Feng Shui apartment?

By the way.., from tomorrow onwards, it's lunar July, the ghosts month of the year, you better take extra caution if you are in bad luck!

In the states, that kind of stuff comes with assault.

I live in China as an ex pat and have never had anything close to that happen to me. Albeit I don't go around with a sign on my neck saying rob me, by being out late at night alone, or not listening to the locals how to have that kind of stuff not happen to me.

You have to remember, you are an outsider and people will look at you as rich. Right or wrong, that is how they will view you, so you are a very good target for thieves.

I have been in the Southern Philippines and I couldn't go outside the house in broad daylight without an escort because of the real possibility of being kidnapped for a "short ransom". Meaning they'll demand a quick solution in the form of a few thousand bucks, if they don't comply they'll send an ear. And keep doing it till either they pay, or run out of body parts.

Yes China is great, just be aware of your surroundings and stop lumping in the negative as an overall fact of China. Most people who visit have pretty great things to say of China and the few negatives things seem to be an anomaly compared to a possibility.

So you want to know where they are not rude when it comes to parting you from your money. Nowhere, because it is called business!! J.C. Dude, that is one of the fun things about China, is learning they highball you and you lowball them, then you come to an agreement, shake hands, everyone smiles and laughs and you get what you bought for a fraction of what they asked for and they still make money.

Deal with it dude and stop your incessant whining!

============
I've lived here for two years and now consider China my home. Then again, I have a pretty opened mind and do not compare the USA to China. Both have their good and bad points.......but the real point, is both are different. Taking an America fix it attitude, or comparing, or just being the typical ugly American is what many have a problem with.

Americans are like that. The Chinese people say I am different and appreaciate that.

Here in the US Asian visitors are usually killed. You can't believe that there are only bad people in China. Maybe that area of the Great Wall is like Roxbury in Boston or the Cabrini Green in Chicago. Count as many acts in China against the Chinese as you want, but keep in mind that the US is no better -- or worse -- and that there are bad guys all over the world.

I went to China twice and I enjoyed the trips thoroughly. The Chinese were friendly and helpful and I plan to go again in November.Sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience in China.I just wonder if it could be your attitude that's causing all these.Did you behave like you were more superior than the locals, conversing in English and stuff like that that irritate them ?Or you were just being plain rude, like you keep on referring to them as dirty Chinese and stuff,so they wanted to teach you a lesson? Believe me,if that's the case, not only in China ,anywhere in the world, you'll be getting the same reception.I have been to the US and the fact is I felt so unsafe in places where the crime rates are among the highest in the world. But that doesn't stop me from going again. You just have to see more of this world to grow out of yourself. No offense.

I think you already know how big is China!
It is just very common that there are good and bad in every race. I'm also living here in China for about 7 years now but I don't have that kind of problem or to the Chinese, thanks God...

Why not recommend to your friends to avoid that place where you know that it's not a good place to go. You can always recommend them to go somewhere else, could be to Shenzhen or Hong Kong.

The main cause is like i said in other thread is people in the rural area is still poor and will do everything to feed themselves and family. China is not like Japan where the average salary is like the standard developed countries. I understand that you may be disappointed because of it, but it is something people must do to keep them survive. I mean China is big and could not keep an eye on everything. Japan is small and that is why it is easier to govern. I know robbing is a worldwide problem, but who wants to do this if they have money. They rather spend time in sauna or restaurant enjoying themselves. Also, China is only a developing country and it has improved in these problem and hope to improve more in the future

I'm a foreigner who frequently backpack around China and South east Asia (been to the rich cities to the poorest villages)...i can say that in every country there is crime like this and fortunately enough events like these never took place for me. As a matter of fact i believe that if u did report these incidents the police would have at least done sth because they value tourists more than the locals and would take extra care in them. Cuz a few times i got lost and cuz of my poor or non-existent Chinese tongue, they were nice enough on several occassions to drop me to my destination lol like my own driver haha...well sorry to hear of ur bad experience but it's unjust for u to hate China overall I mean come on...u just keep moving and just be extremely careful. There are even pamphlets for travellers warning of bag snatchers, where not to store ur valuables etc. etc. u should have noted those cuz I think when we are tourists we automatically believe that we're too carefree and free of danger making us blind to anything just cuz we're in a foreign country. Just becareful and be on ur toes wherever ur headed next time.

dude, calm down...

Sorry to know you had a bad experience in China. Unfortunately, this type of crime is still common in developing countries. China is not an exception. But the governments are doing their best to keep tourists safe. By reading the posts/questions on YahooTravel, I think most of ppl had good experience in China.....

China opened its door to foreigners only 20 years ago. The economic development has not yet reached the rural areas. Besides that, a lot of small towns and villages still remained as closed societies, whose residents have never seen a foreigner and might take you as someone trespassing their territories illegally.... China definitely has a long way to go. But at the same time, tourists need to understand: China is not America where you can ride a bike across the country, even across the border into Canada. To keep yourself safe and show your respect to the locals, stay on your touring routes, and do not bike into the unfamiliar rural areas...

Good luck.

i'm not sure what exactly the question is but my family and i went to china on a holiday last april and had a fine time. it's a good thing we didn't experience the stuff you mentioned. my only bad impression about the place or the people for that matter is the pushing. i was pushed by a stranger in a public place more the several times. it seems to me that pushing is not considered rude there.

You have to understand that China isn't the only country with bad people. Such acts like robbery are found all over the world, and especially in developing countries. People rob others because they are poor and they need the money. I am NOT supporting it, but it is inevitable.

I agree that the government should do something, but they cannot control every little thing, considering the country's size and population of over 1.3 billion.

Wow, i would be very PISSED if someone stole my camera, i mean, really pissed, I'd chase the hell out of them.

But i don't think that's good enough reason to hate china. I never been there, and i never been robbed (and I live in Chicago) and I do plan on going to study abroad in China next year (but also as a tourist).

But I'm glad you told your experience because it gives me a better insight about what sometimes does go on in China with tourists.
But I'm Hispanic (with a almost dark tone to my skin) and I don't even know how I'll be perceived or seen while I'm there, do you know?

edit . . . .. .

"TLMF"-- can you show some links because I actually am interested if that is true, I plan to go to Beijing, and hearing that (if it's true) does give me chills. and could affect if I should go to Beijing.

Ok
one I'm Chinese
and you can't just go around and say China stinks
The government there is horrible only because of the communist government which sated in RUSSIA. The Great Wall has defended China for centuries and it is a great privilege they even let you there. It's not like America doesn't do that to our sites. And there are bad and good areas in China. Just like in America. You can go into a lot of areas with gangs and stuff and you would get maybe even shot or beaten. If you hate China just because of this that must mean you hate America even more. If you look it up, the crime rate in China is smaller then the crime rate here. That means more of that **** happens here than there. People steal things for all the same reasons in China. In case you haven't noticed, China is very poor. And the suffering and pain they have to go through is horrible. If you were in their situation, i bet you would steal stuff too. Thats why China and Japan are some of the smartest countries in the world. They understand hard work and they can take a little suffering. You don't know the things the citizens had to take during the communist take over and even worse thing in WW2 from Japan. More people died in WW2 in China then they did in the Holocaust. And even more during the communist take over. Those events people had to go through made the county's people strong, but it also destroyed the lives of many people, not to mention dreams. And worst of all, the whole country.

Okay, I have a lot of sympathy for you bc I live in China too and have also been victimized a few times. Leaving within a year, hallelujah!
I get so annoyed at people who went to China for two weeks and think it's so flippin great. When you live here it is totally different (and btw, HK is so different from the rest of China that you cannot justify China by citing HK. Yeah, I like HK a lot. People are actually polite and say excuse me if they bump into you, imagine that!) Anyway. . .
One beef I have is that I feel Chinese people have a very either/or attitude about everything in life. Such as, "Either live in the countryside and be dirt poor or live in a horribly polluted city and make some money."--they don't seem to consider that hey, we don't have to destroy the earth just to make a buck. And so on. They are terribly complacent about street crime, figuring, "Oh well, that happens to everyone. C'est la vie." They don't seem to consider trying to improve the quality of life for people who are so poor and apparently forced to rob. I guess charity consists of allowing someone to rob you. . .!? No one reports it to the police, what is the point?
Also, having never been to any other country in their entire lives they just assume other countries are like theirs--ie, polluted, lots of poor people, lots of crime, rude people. Au contraire!! Yeah, Japan has lots of pickpockets, just like China!! HA HA HA. Wrong! Yeah, in America the cops just roll their eyes at you if you report a robbery! Wrong!! In Chicago and NYC the sky is covered w a thick brown haze. Wrong! (Now, LA on the other hand. . .)
So anyway, you and I know, Yes, there are bad people in every country. There are people that steal in every country. Yes, we know this and we are not 3 years old. But get real, I mean, someone comparing the Great Wall to Hell's Kitchen. Give me a stinking break. What if there were a holdup at the Statue of Liberty--would we not feel absolutely appalled, as you so rightly do? And Guilin is one of the top tourist spots in China--to get robbed is simply not acceptable. Any victim of theft has a perfect right to get angry and feel disappointed!!
All I can tell you is what comes around goes around. If a large number of tourists get attacked, cheated, etc at the Olympics China will have a big old egg on its face. You know the Chinese govt will do anything to avoid embarassment before the int'l community.
Also it is true that there are plenty of good people out there, China is slowly evolving, but they have years and years to go before they are truly world class.

babypeanut
agree. i'm a bit scared of traveling to the mainland by myself (i'm not from the mainland). if i want to go i'll join package tour, not that i want to but i feel safer to do so. my boyfriend and i travel to hong kong ourselves this summer and it was loads of fun. chinese government has to do something about it. china has lots of beautiful and interesting things to offer to its tourists; it's a pity that the government can let the nasty things keep going. unbelievable!

I think you're quite unlucky, i had some bad experiences with the taxi-drivers who tried to change my money against counterfeit notes or simulate a break down of their counters to ask for double fares etc., but i won't "hate" China for that, just be more careful in the future.

ANYBODY CAUGHT SHALL BE PENALIZED!" but you know what....all items being sold there are fakes! such hypocrisy!
