Yeah that true. Being an Islamic country and the strict code of dressing in Islamic Cultures like Saudi Arabia, then this country has no exception. But its not so strict at least most Malaysians can dress how they feel as long as there is no obvious nudity.
However in government offices like in Putra Jaya, strict dress code is observed. I remember I went there one time with one of my sales staff and she was wearing a sleeveless shirt. We could not enter any of the offices because of exposing her upper arm. We had to go to a boutique in one of the malls in the city to get a jacket for her. The ladies at the reception simply told her that she is exposing herself which is against the code in government offices. That does not mean am against it, i encourage it but to an extent.
Otherwise living in the city is a different thing. Life turns out fancy at night as its evident in most Kuala Lumpur clubs.

Kuala Lumpur night life is one of the most happening in Asia Pacific. Still a bit of dress code is observed. There is no nudity allowed. Just decent dressing and the security at the entrances will not allow you.
In some states like terangganu and kelantan, Strict dress codes are observed. Even their way of living is different not like the rest of Malaysia. For example they observe the weekends from Friday and end on Saturday and back to work on Sunday, just like they do it in Saudi Arabia or Oman.
The laws are of course a bit easy on people living in Kuala Lumpur and its environs, not like 10 years ago where even hand holding in public was not allowed. But being an Islamic state, its expected to have these kind of laws.
I hope that was helpful and gives you some light into a bit of public life in Malaysia.
Thanks for reading through my reply.

i dont think there is any rule to how to dress in malaysia.. u shud see bukit bintang walk at nite...
but at the same time... we malaysians are very sensitive to less clothes and more skin..u would end up as a headturner...and a attention to our crowd.. which not much people agree too.
so if u are not an attention seeker.. dress well and decent..more clothes and less skin..at the same time..remember malaysia is a hot country so if u r a tourist .. wear something made out of cotton..
it will make u comfortable and our ( malaysian) eyes at ease to look at. |

Hi Emma,
No such law for the non-Muslim in Malaysia. Just dress as you would when you're in Liverpool, UK |

You can wear anything u like. As long as you are wearing something. Muslims can wear what they like and non muslims can wear what they like. But you will get arrested if you are completely naked. |

I do not know if there are any laws, however if traveling by train from Thailand when you cross the border (before imigration) there is a notice which highlights the sort of cloths undesirable types wear and I think it refers to hippies wear, and advises if you exhibit any of these characteristics you may be refused entry into Malaysia |

I never heard of that law and certainly no such thing as that law but during certain ceremonies, yes. Old folks really do care about dressing up in public. Especially during some festivals and occasions such as wedding. |
