The church does not REALLy wants money so bad. It was during Old testment's times that God commanded His people to give the tenth of their income to the Lord thus coined as tithes, a tenth part of a personâ€™s annual increase given to the Lord through the Church. Tithing funds are used to build churches and temples, to sustain missionary work, and to build the kingdom of God on earth.
Abraham gave tithes of all he possessed to Melchizedek, Gen. 14: 18-20 (Heb. 7: 1-2, 9; Alma 13: 15). All the tithe is the Lordâ€™s: it is holy unto the Lord, Lev. 27: 30-34. Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase, Deut. 14: 22, 28. The tithe of all things brought they in abundantly, 2 Chr. 31: 5. Will a man rob God? Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings, Mal. 3: 8-11 (3 Ne. 24: 8-11).

hmmm,I don't think this is exactly a guestion so I'm not exactly going to answer it,I prefer to give my extra money to poor people whom I know needs it.

Funny Answer: because they need to pay the fine for their sins and they collect money so that they can pay for their sins and get rid of them!

Logical Answer: Without money, Church would be but on the land of imagination only. Moreover, money is not the root of evil. It is not the object which is bad or good. It is the user that makes it so. Criminals kill people with a knife. Then why do you keep it in your kitchen?

the answer is obvious, the money is for legal fees. Priests molest children and that is illegal in most places so they need defense attorneys

actually the saying is quite incomplete, this verse if from the bible and can be found in Timothy 6:10 i guess, well as I remember the verse is:

"For the love of money is a root of all evil: and some whose hearts were fixed on it have been turned away from the faith, and been wounded with unnumbered sorrows".

So misuse of the money is really the root of all evil. I don't think the church misuse their collections a lot. *i think*

The premises in your question are jumbled up. "Money" per se (as it its) is not the root of all evil. This reference is from the bible:
"For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows."

it is "THE LOVE OF money" that is the root of all evil.
The church does God's work (yup for 2,000years now) and though along the way it was not as smooth sailing, i'd say it's doing a great job.

first of all, if it wasn't for money... there wouldn't be a place to have church because they can't pay for their expenses. the church already has a lot of tax exemptions for existing... and with people just giving a few bucks each time the basket passes them, they either resort to inviting more people to come to church or come up with fund raising activities... so what's wrong with that?

perhaps the problem is with the people who are so critical of their churches on issues regarding money. it would be unfair if the Catholic Church suddenly preaches about tithing (giving the church 10% of gross income, as done in the Bible so often) because it automatically gives its followers the perception of the church wanting money so bad.

however, when you go to another denomination that is completely comforatble with tithing, that church has so much money, its followers don't think their church is money hording them... it's because they believe that they can use the money for more things to improve their community, not just paying their preacher to preach to them every week. this is the tragedy of most Catholic churches... their followers are ungrateful to their priests.

i hope you're not one of those kids who grew up thinking that when people give offertory fruits... they'll just put it in front of the altar to offer it to "God"... of course the priest will have dessert after mass.

Your question becomes irrelevant because its premise is wrong.

But to answer, money is NOT the root of all evil. Sure people will say it is the LOVE of money that is the root of all evil & that is true. But admit it or not there is evil within each one of us--some more than others, deep in our hearts & it comes out every once in a while, especially when we least expect it--like the Incredible Hulk.

Why does the church collect money? I am assuming the church in this question is any religious group normally congregating every Sunday, such as the Roman Catholic Church & other Christian Denominations. So why do they collect money? Economics. Because the church building & the church staff need money to sustain itself. If you want an answer in a historical perspective, the Old Testament teachings say that the priest is entitled to take a portion from the offerings of God's people & that means that the people should GIVE to the "church". In the New Testament, the Bible writers again uphold this teaching as it is written that people who preach the gospel is entitled to get paid, but it just depends on them if they want to or not.

In the same way, if you do not want to GIVE to the church, you are free NOT to.

money isn't the evil one. it is the person who is spending the money in mindless activities (that brings the soul to tears) that is evil. so it's okay for church to ask for donations because it goes to charitable deeds and the maintenance of the church. and we need a house of worship (whatever our religion is) because we need a quiet place to rest our weary bodies.

Its real simple. Money also makes the world go round, keep the power on, keeps the water running, keeps the administration at the church eating, living and surviving (by no means in excess) and it keeps the doors open. without money they would not have the church. Some churches require a tithing percentage of your income - one would only hope your not a member of that church!

The Church collecting money is for sustainment and support of missionary work. Missionary work is consist of spiritual guidance and teaching. Providing basic needs of the poor and a variety of issues that provides resources.

Its all about GIVING. ***That's the way its suppose to be***
