I have been to china several times. I have found a good website to help plan my trips. www.itsaboutchina.com you can go there and contact tour guides directly plus see some of the things to see while in china. Myself I like the south west provence of Guangxi in particular Yangshuo. |

Get out of the main tourist cities and into the country. Meet the real people. Don't go near the wall, there are far more interesting things to see. |

I'd see the Great Wall of course. I'd also visit my friend that lives there. He'd probably have some cool places to take me. |

August in most places of China is very hot, therefore I would not recommend things that need a lot of exertion such as climbing the Great Wall.
In the summer Chinese leaders traditionally go to Qinhuangdao and stay in Beidaihe just in the South of Qinhuangdao - a coastal resort in Hebei Province not too far (relatively) from Beijing(Therefore the NorthEast of China). Historically Emperors used to go to Chengde also in Hebei Province which is noted as being somewhat cooler in the summer months due to the proximity of mountains - there is an old Summer Palace there similar to The Forbidden City in Beijing plus other places of historical interest.
If you want to venture further South, although much nearer to the Tropic of Cancer, the Province of Yunnan (borders on the countries of Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar) is known as the country of eternal springtime, having a climate that is mild and balmy. The East of the province is on a limestone plateau and the West is mountain ranges with rivers and valleys - renowned for its beautiful scenery. Kunming the provincial capital is known as Spring City and Dali is very famous as an ancient capital. The best I can do now is bit of cut and past about Dali.
Quote: "Dali is one of Yunnan's most popular tourist destinations, both for its historic sites and the "Foreigners' Street" that features western-style food, music, and English-speaking business owners, making it popular among both western and Chinese tourists, who come to gawk at the foreigners. There are also multiple "coffee shops", such as those in Amsterdam, where foreigners smoke marijuana that grows in the hills surrounding the town. This has caused some tourists to have an extended stay in this beautiful old town." Unquote
I live and work in China and find that many people I have met target Dali as a "must do".
Of course there is always Tibet where you can go trekking in the Himalayas or even climbing Mount Everest. |

I agree with Remi L. That answer is the reality here in China. What would I do ? I would head for the nearest international airport and go to a decent country with decent people. China is a toilet full of T*RDS. |

Ideally I would go to Tibet. But all the train tickets for this summer have probably already been sold. You'd have to plan that kind of trip months in advance.
I'd go to Sanya on Hainan Island. Then even if you were hot you could dunk yourself in the ocean or in the hotel's swimming pool.
I'm speaking as a person who lives in China--in other words, I can visit Beijing, Shanghai, wherever when the weather is much cooler! |

Sichuan province hosts some of the most beautiful sites and cities in China. You could spend a year there and hardly scrapped the surface. There's Chengdu, Chongqing, Qui Qai Kuan, Himalayas, etc. Try going from Kuming, then Chengdu, Chonqing. But then China is so full of interesting places, so as they say, even a life-time is not enough! |

depends on what you are looking for.
For nature sceneries, i would recommend Si Chuan province. There are just way too many pretty things to see in that province. Here is some of the most famous ones:
1. Jiu Zhai Gou and Huang Long
http://contaximages.com/folder.php?id=130
2. Mount E'Mei
3. Grand Buddha
http://whc.unesco.org/pg.cfm?cid=31&id_site=779
4. The capital city of Chengdu is the gateway to Tibet. If your schedule allows, fly there or take the so called 'Railway to Heavan'.....very well worth the time&money
http://www.accesstibettour.com/train-railway.html
+ delicious SiChuanese food.
http://voyage.typepad.com/china/2006/07/qinghaitibet_ra.html
5. or take a 1 hr flight to Xi'an...
If you wanna explore city life, try HongKong, ShangHai, BeiJing or GuangZhou ... |
