It shouldn't affect the friendship. One should know where to draw the line between friendship and business relationship.
If you asked for a professional consultation, then you should pay for the services rendered. Unless, you guys were in a pub, while semi intoxicated, you asked for an advice and he/she slurringly gave you one, I'd consider that a friendly advice. |

maybe...depends on the person.
For, me, it wont because my friend has a job to do and consultation is part of the job. I'd might ask for a discount though. |

Since you mentioned school friend, thus it's not that close enough to help out.
Yes, true what Yaya said about Business & Personal.
Have to have a clear line of it.
Think of it professionally depending on what type of case your s.friend is handing & amount of transaction/process & research that they have to come up with.
Professionally as their career they might have to charge a fee. After all it's not cheap to become a lawyer. Just like doctors, technical engineers, opticians & other professionals, there's no free meals. Even if there's some minor free advices but that comes with potential to make business out of it.
Of course before seeking their consultation, I will casually talk about the budget & what type of cases & level. I'm sure your friend will quote what's the range of price & appropriate actions before all the decision making.
Else if you really can't afford it, you can seek legal advice from civil court, MCA, or even non-government organizations. You can google around for it. |
