It really depends what you are looking forever

Koh Sami - quieter, less developed , romantic , slower

Phuket - busy , lots of things to do, nightlife etc

I think if it is your first visit you should go to Phuket as it is a great 1st time expereince and so much to see and do. We stayed on Patong Beach in a lovely , small hotel called the coconut village. It was reasonable ,small , clean, functional , away from the crowds but close ebough to walk there.

We were a family and managed to do all the family stuff and some partying too.

Have fun, I am jealous

You are going at a good time. There will be a little rain in both places but it will be quick and pass. Anyway go to Koh Samui!

Phuket is cool but it is way over subscribed. There are wall to wall tourists these days and the poor Thais are exhausted. I was there recently and the Harleys were going past my hotel window all night long and I was in a good place on the beach.

Expect to get over charged for nearly everything on Phuket as well these days. It is like Mexico or Hawaii now from a high cost standpoint and stressed out local perspective. It used to be cool and fun but now it is sooo commercial that it feels cold.

Koh Samui while it has a lot of tourists is still pretty laid back and cool. I liek to stay on Lamai beach and there are tons of places to stay. I have been staying at the Thai House Beach Restort for years and I met my wife on Samui. ther eare many places that are cheaper too and right on the beach like the Weekender resort. A street back the prices drop to like $15-$25 per night. You can stay cheaper than that but I don't like to...

Trust me there is plenty of nightlife on Samui. More in fact that many people can handle it just isn't as in your face as Phuket. You can be in it or out of it on Samui whereas on Phuket, unless you stay way up in the hills the place is right in your face these days. Again Samui has a great nightlife it is just more fun and less tout and tourist infested.

Lamai beach is my favorite on Samui but many people stay on Chaweng which is closer to the airport and about 15 minutes north. Chaweng Beach sucks and is wall to wall tourists and touts.

There are also a couple of nice little islands to the north of Samui and the diving is superb.

Samui is a cute and wonderful little paradise island. It's a Thai island and not Bora Bora but I think it's laid back Thai flavor makes it the a fun place to be and one of my favorite destinations.

Good luck.

I've been to Koh Samui twice and loved it, so I would recommend it. x

Both are major tourist spots and spoiled - koh samui has not been spoiled for as long as phuket so its a little nicer

szekeres101
Definately Samui, Its cheaper for a start and its really cheap to get on the ferry to Koh Phanagn or Kao Tao

I say Samui, because there are both highly populated/touristy areas and the opposite. Also it is just a short, cheap ferry ride from Koh Phangan and Koh Tao (as well as the mainland) should you want to see some other places.

Phuket is probably more upmarket as a resort island .

LilMissSunshine
go to Koh Pan ngan- its less spoilt

Sniper
You meant Koh Samui? That depends on you, if you want all the happening, then it is Phuket but if you like the quiet and secluded beaches, it would be Koh Samui!!!

Oh, Phuket, go to Koh Sami....

Check out this website www.onevacationclub.com. They have very good deals and offers. Maybe you will find a deal so you can afford both.

Oh...Phuket is so much better...If you want Phuket then book now. It is great!!!~~~

scotty
I have to been to both many times, Phuket is better by far in my opinion!!

madonna_toller
Both are nice but the weather might not be. Rain showers...but fortunately not all day long in general. Phuket will offer more to do eg excursions than Kho Samui.

Crybaby Bob
My opinion Koh Samui

uoftom
I had one of the most memorable times of my life in Thailand. I would fly into Bankok, then to Phuket. Then, go stay on the Phi Phi island...it is amazing and relaxing to say the least.

It will cost you £10 or $20 to go to koh samui from phuket.......do both. The bus and ferry are a trip worth doing in themselves

Depends what you want. If its nightlife Phuket. Samui has it to but for a 1st timer Phuket would be better I think. Alot more in your face.

peanutz
What do you want to do? If you want good nightlife and places to visit, go to Phuket.

If you want a quiet place just relaxing at the beach and nothing else, go to Koh Samui. This place has less possibility of traveling around compared to Phuket.

Make your decision.

Between those two, I definitely prefer Koh Samui.

But I'd recommend that you skip both and head to one of the small islands off the coast of Trang or Trat.
