Actually, that's the impression of a foreigner who watches weird Japanese cartoons and porns a lot. And in Japan, not much people really looks at those kinds of things however, those kinds of extreme ones seems to be pretty popular in other countries. Just ask her where your friend got the information. There are perverts in Japan but not as much compared to the U.S.

I'm a young, attractive female living alone in Japan, and I have travelled to many countries. I feel very safe in Japan, and always catch the trains solo late at night.

There is a large voyeurism culture here, you will always get stared at, but so far 4 months in and no groping! i don't catch the subway in peak morning times though...

there are female only carriages on most train sections for both morning and evening peak hours.

I get sick of the staring, the hushed conversations under breaths - or even worse when they speak openly about me in front of me, without realising i can understand a bit of what their saying, but not once have i ever felt unsafe.

There are stories here of foreign girls getting stalked or followed, but these are pretty rare.

Japanese men DO like to look, and if you catch the train late at night when they've hit the beer/sake they will stare at you and burst into giggles, but I have not had any negative experiences with any men on the trains!

Absolute rubbish,having lived for a time in Japan i can honestly say they do protect women and children with
every fibre in there body.They are the most courteous

Most Japanese men are NOT pervs. But there are problems on the very crowded trains with women being groped. They called these men "chikan". I believe this is only a problem on the trains, and not anywhere else. You would be very safe in most public places if you use common sense.
There are women only trains. And if you're non-Japanese, it's unlikely that anyone will touch you.

I would say that you can not generalise like that, there are some like that and some in every race. I have been to Japan and although it is very different to England I would say that people are much the same all over the world.

My friends told me that some American guys in Japan raped Japanese girls so they suggested to me that it's better to stay away from all American guys in Japan.

Well, what do you think reading that? Doesn't it sound too extreme? Yes, it does.

Anyway, my answer to your question is that all Japanese guys are not perverts but it is true that some of them will be perverts like there are perverts existing in the US.

But there are signs up on trains warning girls to be on the lookout for gropers but that's because the trains are so very packed and people are pushed together it would happen in America too if the opportunity arose

There are many occurances of "train groping" in Japan, as there is a very large fetish following in Japan. though saying all Japanese men are perverted is a poor generalization, your friend is trying to give you some sound advice.

There is a chance you'd be harassed, maybe groped or touched, but these are not the social standard, and they usually don't occur to tourists.

Though some women have cell phone programs that flash angry messages to ward off these gropers.

But don't let this ruin your time there, just be careful where you go, and try to stick with people you know, and if you go out alone, stay in public areas and know how to ask for help or call the police.

Just don't let it discourage you too much.

they arent all perverts. there are as many perverts in the U.S(more cuz of the greater population) as in japan. dont make generalizations of peoples races.

It can. I experienced an incident, pretty horrendous it was too, coming home from work one evening which I would rather not go into detail about on here. Just be careful.

I think its a generalisation to say all Japanese men are perverts, but they do have a very strange view of women's place in society....they prefer women to be subservient, and maybe they think that western women are all 'easy' which seems to be the case in a lot of eastern and Asian societies, so it may not be wise to be out alone.....but that is true for women who travel into any different culture....only the West seems to have genuine equality for women.

well japan is in my opinion a very weird country
they watch alot cartoons and cartoon porn and weird stuff like that
so japan is most of the time associated with pervertness
but i dont live in japan so i wouldnt know ^^
