Although Singapore is safe, don't be complacent because there is hardly any police presence. Just take the normal precautions as you would in your own country and you will be fine. There are many tourists in the central areas - shopping and clubbing belts so you won't stick out.
If you are blond and exploring the sub urban areas, the most you would get are a few admiring glances. Singapore men are gentlemanly and well behaved and know better than to hassle anyone. |

While i am not a female, I did travel to SE Asia im May 07. I spent 4 days in Singapore city center. If you are adventurous and will be exploring, it may be sugested you do it with a tour guide, or escourted tour. The every day travel, bus, subway, cab will be safe for you, ***you may want to not travel to "Little India" that was the only "questionable" neighborhood i went to. Dark streets, litter everywhere, and alot of men hanging out late at night.*** |

Singapore is generally quite a safe place. But low crime doesn't mean no crime as the police tagline goes. So you still need to take the necessary precautions when you are in Singapore.
But otherwise, you should be able to enjoy your trip to Singapore alone without the associated fear of high crime rates, insecurity and instability, etc. |

Hi Muff,
To answer your question, firstly singapore is one of the safest places in the world to visit. Beside the low crime rate, almost 90% of the population speaks english so its easy to get around and get any form of help when needed.
like most of the people above have mentioned, you can walk around in the middle of the night and not be afraid of getting mugged etc.
Taxi are always running by the meter and its a major offence for a taxi driver to ask for a fixed fare - they may lose their license if they are reported.
If you would like a tour guide when you are in town do drop me an email before hand and I'll see if I can take you around or you can visit this website http://www.couchsurfing.org/ and get to know people in Singapore before coming and they may become you local tour guide.
Have fun! But rememberf low crime doesnt mean no crime ... |

I'm a Singaporean ger and trust me -
Singapore is one of the lowest crime rate in the region.
Most of the Singaporeans don't usually mingle with strangers unless in a pub or similar places so you are pretty being left alone.
I had walk home at 2am from bus interchange (no more bus operating) to my house as I was chatting with my friend and lost track of time earlier - the distance is about 500m and nothing happens even there are minium people walking in front or behind me.
Most Singaporeans know English so even you are lost alone, you can ask a Singaporean for directions - we are more than happy to help if possible.
I do get lost travelling locally to go to bldgs that I'm not familiar with and I ask fellow Singaporean for help. ^^
However, there's a few places that you should avoid being alone at all cost at night which include - Geylang (Singapore's red light district), Little India (a lot of Indian foreign workers there) and Geylang Seri (a lot of local small time gangsters there).
I live here for 24 years and I assure that other than usual small time crimes like robbery or pickpocket that you must be careful in crowded places or alone, Singapore is one of the safest country in the world.
Edit (Note for AJ)
All Singapore Taxis have metres install inside.
Taxi touting (Merces) perhaps will be more often at Changi Airport (pick up fee at Changi Airport is higher) while riskraw touting is not common if you look like a backpacker. |

If a criminal were to target anybody, it won't be because of their hair color or race...
That said, Singapore has the lowest crime rate in the world.
It's extremely safe.
Of course, the usual precautions to take apply e.g not wearing too much gold jewellery, not waving your money about in public. |

Transportation mode in Singapore is very safe, no worry of being driven to some dark spot and robbed. The only thing is might be cheated by taxi drivers who dont turn on metre.
Low crime doesnt mean no crime. As long as you are alert to your surrounding, its pretty safe. |

singapore is an absolutely safe place for a lone, female traveller. you can walk in the streets after dark alone and nothing will happen to you. you can take the cab alone after midnight too. crime rates in singapore are very low and it's one of the safest countries in the world. even so, if you're in a quiet place, try to walk in brightly-lit streets. |

I'm an expat from the US who lived in Singapore for 3 years, was single there and developed a lot of great friends there. Singapore is safe. Bear in mind you do have your typical pick pockets so be mindful when you're walking down orchard rd., chinatown boat quay among others. But you will have a great time. Just be mindful, you're not in the US, they are still upset of being deemed 'inhumane' because they gave Michael Faye 3 strokes of the cane (Michael was the one in the early 90's who spray painted/vandalized cars, buildings etc, was caught, jailed and sentenced 4 stokes of the cane. His dad whined to Clinton for help and in spite of this, only got 3 strokes of the cane) but are very friendly in general. Enjoy! I'm working to head over there soon for a few days as well. |

singapore has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. however it is also one of the most expensive cities in Asia.
stick to well-lit areas and avoid isolated dark alleys at night and you will have a wonderful time. |

I have heard that Singapore is a great destination. What you might want to consider is checking in w/ the US Embassy once you get there. In other countries that I have been to, they make it a point to make sure that you are okay and that you indeed are able to leave the country on your specified date. Also, in the off chance that you run into some problems you'll have a contact person able to assist you. |

Oh yes of course. But you still have to be careful. I am sure you know where are the places to avoid, not just in Singapore but elsewhere int he world, eg, dark alleys, especially in the middle of the night. |

Yes S'pore is safe. Though Singapore has low crime rate, it doesn't mean there's zero crime rate. But girl alone better not to walk on the dark street at night. |

Being a tourist, the most likely 'danger' you'll face are touts. When you take a cab, insist on using the meter. Its illegal for cabbies to demand a fixed fare of any sort. The Mercedes taxis cost the same as other taxis when flagged down, so don't be tricked by them. When you eat a food centres, also look out for those touts. In the city centre, you'll likely meet trishaw owners looking for tourists. Just the other day, I saw one honking at every Caucasian he could see in an attempt to get a passenger.
Little India may seem a little scary due to the many foreign men that frequent the area, but it really is fine. I haven't heard of any outrage of modesty cases there (Such perverts tend to ply the quieter neighbourhoods; in fact, there's a flasher at large in the vicinity of my school). There are however quieter alleys that are thought to be 'red-light districts'(This however is info from Dad who lived there 25 years ago, never seen anything there myself the many times we've gone to Mustafa), and its a known fact that foreign male workers sometimes look for (male) customers to earn some extra money in the evenings when they get off work. So you should definitely be safe. And you probably will want to check out some of the cuisine(the smaller shops are more economical and authentic than those fancy restaurants; I recommend Ghandhi's) as well as bargain department store Mustafa's.
In fact, you're likely to get better treatment if you're an adult Caucasian than me(a local). Its almost as if we have an inferiority complex left behind from the days of colonialism. And don't be alarmed if people's accent starts to change when they're talking to you, its another little peculiarity here. |

Hi! I'm a foreigner who's now based in Singapore. I sometimes get home late due to work or social commitments. I must say that I feel safe here in Singapore. My place is near the PSA (port area) and eventhough there maybe guys working in the pier, I have never been harassed when I get home very late. Back in my home country, you wouldn't see me walking anywhere near the port area late at night!
Moreover, even if I'm wearing shorts and tank tops when I'm walking or exploring during weekends, nobody has harassed me or done any wolf-whistling. Guys here are generally quite well-behaved. A lady can easily file a police report if she has been harassed.
You'd find that it's easy to explore Singapore since there are free maps in the visitor centres and there's extensive bus and MRT (train) systems here.
Though it's generally safe here, just be careful with your stuff when you're in touristy areas like Orchard Road. I've heard that there have been a few pickpocketing incidents there. Though Singapore has low crime rate, it doesn't mean there's zero crime rate.
Lastly, if you're uncomfortable seeing prostitutes, aside from avoiding the Geylang area (red light district), you may wish to avoid Orchard Road area around midnight. There are some Asian and Western prostitutes who frequent that area since there are a lot of hotels there. |
