Is being possessive the same as being protective?

Are the 2 words interchangeable?

Although not interchangeable, there could be instances when one exhibiting the trait of being possessive could very well be being protective too.

If you run into a smart alecky type of individual he could easily rationalize that he is being possessive only because he's protective of his interests. A modicum of possessiveness is acceptable but not to the point of being controlling and dominating. It is my contention that someone who is ultra possessive is actually a selfish insecure individual.

Having someone who is protective has its merits and demerits too. It's nice to be pampered but not suffocated. It's great that someone cares enough to want to know my whereabouts but heck if I tell him my every move!

No. Being possessive is a negative personality trait. It means treating someone like an object that you own and have the right to control. Being protective on the other hand is far more positive attribute. It just means looking out for the well being of another person and trying to protect them from harm. Extreme obsessive protectiveness however can also be seen as possessive, especially if the person does not appreciate the 'protection' provided.

nmyankee
Possessiveness denotes ownership which is self-serving whereas, protective is being concerned for the welfare of another so, no, they aren't interchangeable.

pinkjade
No, they are not interchangeable.
You can protect something you possess but you cannot always possess something you protect.
Besides, we always hear people saying that someone is possessive for that person feels too constricted by someone who they feel is overprotective or overly jealous. One will feel this possessiveness when one tastes freedom and feel untrusted to protect oneself. People misuse the one for the other. What do you think?

Btw, I am enjoying the questions you post. :)

KhK
Possessive is giving no choice to the person, in other hand protective is showing concern rigorously and explain why he/she is do. The protective person try to warn and take protective measures of the concerned without choking his/her desire. To be possessive is easy but protective is a hard 24 hours job.

PerpetualTraveller
Possessive- you feel that the other person is your property and you do not want to lose him/her ( as property). You have little if any concern about how that person feels about it or about his/her happiness. Just as long as you own him/her and make sure no one else does, you are happy. You can also be 'protective' within being possessive, i .e you probably don't want anything to happen to him/her, but simply because you do not want your property to suffer any harm because then you cannot enjoy it. It is pure selfishness.

"Protective' usually means that you care about that person's safety and happiness and you do not want anything bad to happen to that person, but that is not tied to your feeling that he/she is your property. You may say things- like "it is dark and I will accompany you home", or "be careful when you go there, people can harm you/cheat you there". It is altruistic. You actually care about that person's safety and nothing else.

jd
Not at all.
To possess is not to protect and may be stifling if too strong. Protection does not dictate possession and needs to be strong.

misz_romantic
no.

possessive is NOT a good thing. i can be a hurtfull thing or physicly abusive thing. like a boyfriend who doesnt want ANYONE to see his girlfriensd in a skirt bcuz he "ownsz" her so to speak.

but protective is not wanting your girlfriend to go out dressed like that bcuz he caresz how othersz may look at her or act towardsz her &+ he doesnt want that.

i hope i make some sence.

Almost, just a simple fact... Being possessive is almost as being materialistic, you just want to give protection just because you own it, you protected it by your own selfish will... But being protective is also the same although... A person who's protective doesn't consent himself to do a selfish act, but that person only acts protective, only to prove that "that person" cares mostly about your well being...

you are mine

dont hurt mine

i dont know if they are interchangeable but someone who is possessive will most likely be protective and vice versa
