Maybe if you live in the city it's safer. I'm Filipino and i live in the city and nothing has happened to me yet (thank God). Not that i'm wishing for it.
I would suggest that you live in Makati. There are many foreigners there. Ortigas Center in Pasig, i believe, is as safe as Makati. probably even safer. The Asian Development Bank is in Pasig and there are plenty of Expats walking around the area. Avoid the Mindanao islands.
The Philippines has common petty crimes as in any other country.
I believe being safe from these crimes should start from ourselves. Here are a few tips you can do:
1. Avoid wearing really fancy jewelry.
2. Don't open wallets in the streets. It's better to keep change for a thousand peso dollar bill (in 100 peso denominations) in your pocket than be seen opening a wallet and taking out wads of cash.
3. Keep in mind that celfones cannot be picked on trees. Avoid using it while in crowded places, in the streets etc.
4. If you must ride a cab, get the medallion number (in the case of Manila cabs, the taxi name) and the plate number. Send an SMS to someone you know the details. This is just for emergencies like if you accidentally left your passport in the cab or something. Do be reminded however to keep your personal belongings close to you wherever you go.
5. Check and double check your things and personals before leaving an area.
6. Find out where your embassy is. Most of the foreign embassies are located in the Makati Business District and the Roxas Boulevard area in Manila.
7. Always inform someone of where you're going or where you'll be in the next 5 hours for example or where you currently are when travelling, not just here in the Philippines but anywhere in the world. I think hotels has that kind of service wherein you can leave information such as your trip itinerary.
Manila is home to a lot of friendly and english speaking filipinos. If you need help on anything like asking for directions or asking for loose change for your money, Pinoys will be of great help and will be willing to assist you in any way. Remember that we are a happy race and we welcome friends from other countries. :) |

that depends on which Island you are going to. If you are going to a large muslim area, yes it is very dangerous.
Best thing you should do is go to the US embassy and find out what islands to avoid. Kidnappings are rampant. |

I am English I live here in Cebu, and I feel a hell of a lot safer than in England. It's safer to walk the streets here at night, than it is to walk the High Street of any town in England in the daylight. |

Of course it's safe in the Philippines. - If you are traveling to Asia, consider the Philippines coz they are the only country that is familiar with American culture and values there. Also, they speak fluent English...
To the Caucasian racists out there, don't disparage the Filipinos - after all, they are 3.5% European - and are related to you. |

It's as safe as anywhere else nowadays. Just make sure that if you're a foreigner, avoid the southernmost areas of the country. |

It's not bad as the media portray the Philippines. Compared to other dangerous countries, Philippines can't compare! |

Its safe but theres risks too... Like every country... Most foreigners survived the Philippines... So, you have a very good chance to survive here... Just be alert and get used to the heat, problems, poverty, etc. here...
The southern part are safe but be extra careful for rebbels... Some of those who answered this has corrections but its ok... Besides, I dont want to make corrections... |

it is safe in the Philippines if you are not a jerk who dislikes Filipinos. if you go there and criticize the way we Filipinos live, you are asking for trouble. but for the most part, Filipinos are hospitable, friendly and are fluent in English. |

Sure, but it is better to be informed.
If you're a foreigner, better stick to the tourist-friendly areas and stay away from the cordilleras and mindanao where insurgency groups are everywhere. |

of course it is safe, shoot I am a whiteboy, and I went there alone... I had the best time there. It was safe because I used my common sense, as long as you dont go where you are not supposedto go, and you also know someone there you should be fine, stick to people you knw, because no matter where you go in the world you should always be careful, even here in the USA. |
