Although I don't recall any foreigners being kidnapped on vacation recently (past 6 months or so), I would avoid Mindanao just to be on the safe side. Too bad though, because Davao is beautiful.
Your best bet is Boracay for the beaches and diving. If you're interested in the wildlife, try Palawan. If you want to swim with whale sharks, head for Sorsogon. If you'd rather stay close to the cities, stay in Makati. From there you can visit Tagaytay and Puerto Gallera for overnight or day trips.
For a tour of the unofficial "red light districts" (if that's your kind of thing) it's best to bring a local along although any cab driver will be willing to help you out if you tell him what you're looking for.
About safety...just practice a little common sense as you would in any big city and no one will take advantage of you.
ok....so enjoy your visit, Bridgesopman....hope you're nothing like KellyW... You'll find that unlike some people, we judge people by their actions, not their nationality. |

Boracay is a big tourist area and many people from all over the world go there. It is safe.

As for fares, I've always had the best luck with travel agents. Maybe they could even get you a packaged deal. |

Hi I live in the Philippines, I guess it's safe as long as you dont go to provinces like Mindanao etc where the terrorists are.
Or if you're going to the Philippines or any other foreign country, you should always be careful and observant.
About the airline, it depends in your location. Philippine Airlines is the number 1 airline over here. |
|

Well

It is safe to travel to the Philippines.
The only exception would be if you happen to fit the profile of an "ugly american": the boastful, loud-mouthed, overweight, culturally disrespectful morons who troll the world so they can admonish anyone and everything they experience that is different (and therefore threatening) from their narrow realm of experience and understanding. They are just stupid. |

Philippines is as safe as anyplace to visit. Just check out the major online sites for fares and also call the airlines directly. I saved $500 on my upcoming trip by calling my airline compared to online prices. BTW, the only fights I ever seen in the bars are girls fighting for an American guy's attention! |

well to tell you mister!
traveling means going to other culture so its not only about AMERICANS!... i mean if your worrying because you're AMERICAN you will get kidnapped or robbed....
im telling you not to go outside AMERICA......
,maybe that the best thing for your SAFETY!!!
about Philippines its like a paradise there!
when i was there FIlipinos are so warm and hospitable!
so they will respect you just try not to be a BAD AMERICAN(being moron, disobeying the law, and unstoppable mouth)
just good luck! |

Sure, just get the full series of shots beforehand and avoid the prostitutes, no matter how pretty they are. AirGorilla.com lists LAX to Manila at $942 on Japan AirLines leaving 9/1 and returning 9/10. From NY trip is @ $500 more. Travel tme is @ 18 hrs with short layovers at Tokyo. If you're paranoid and know another language, use it. |

its is safe.we went to a lot of place and thanks god, nothing bad happen.my husband just went back to san francisco the other day.he is even a US army and came here for vacation.and he really enjoy the trip and would definitely come back again this december.u can check your travel agent if u have one but if u dont check on their offices respectively.the internet prices are way too much expensive than the one at the ticket agency or at the airline ticketing office.if u want a big seating space, try asiana airlines.it also provides each seats monitor unlike other airlines which has just one big screen. |

it's safe... if you like beaches go to boracay and party. but if you like a calm, quiet place go to pagudpud. bolinao is nice too. go to cebu and palawan. there are so many nature beauties in the phils. |

Yes it is safe. as long as you go as far as Visayas. The best fare is from Cathay Pacific. And besides they have Hong Kong stop over. Atleast you can visit 2 asian countries. |

I live here in Manila.
My brother-in-law from Mississippi came here as often as he liked. (He met my sis last year and married her.)
As a vacation spot, Philippines is one of the best.
Honestly, your government's negative travel advisories were either grossly unfair or inaccurate.
The so-called Abu Sayyaf terrorists are recalcitrant peasants in a few southernmost islands that you can only reach by boat. Going there could take you the better part of the day.
Air fares: Well, I have only the vaguest idea but if you are going to be hopping from island to island (we have over 7,000 mind you), you might as well try Philippine Airlines or Cebu Pacific because they have the best local info on hotels and connecting flights. |

It is generally safe to travel to the Philippines but check with the State Department's Travel Advisory for updates on travel to the Philippines and other countries. A non-stop flight to Manila will be more expensive than one with a connecting flight from neighbor countries like Korea and Japan, etc. Online travel agencies have rates you can check fares when you want to travel. A reliable, local travel agent can also help you out on that matter. |

Yes it is safe but it wont hurt to be cautious as you travel. Normally the unsafe condition is brought by exaggeration from media. Even if I am a Filipino I feel troubled when I watch the news. But I dont really feel it in my everyday life as I get out my home, work and even travel.
I would strongly recommend though not to travel in Mindanao area. Check on the site of Philippine Department of Tourism. They would normally have good deals for package tours. |

Sure it is safe as long you observe basic precautions, the best fares to travel to Philippines can be found on the airlines website like nwa.com or evaair.com, I have just came back from Philippines and I travel with Cathay Pacific and is such an amazing airline with great fares also. |

Yes it safe to travel to philippines.

Of course it is! just be aware of southern Mindanao. By all means go! The Philippines is one of my favorite countries to go to. The cheapest fare i found was through travelocity which was i think United and Japan Airlines. If you want a non-stop flight book Philippine Airlines, but I wouldn't recommend it because the service, in my opinion isn't that great. |

americans think the whole world is just about them in nearly all issues and cases, and the rest of the world just wishes that it stayed that way when it came to travel and vacations. just go look at the canyon and vegas will ya. |

its nice there and safe although not in all areas. The Philippines is composed of 7107 islands and divided into 3 major groups of island(Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao) .A certain portion in Mindanao is consider to be where the troubles are but still not the entire island. In fact ive been to some places there and I can say, Business as usual.Try places in visayas and luzon. I suggest Bicol Region. Ive gathered here some places you can try and regarding hotel accomodations, flight schedules and air fares.. you can check out the LINKS or use the Google Search Box in these pages...

yes it's safe. it's only those so-called "travel advisories" that adversely affect our tourism. if you know where to go, then you'll be fine. of course you should be careful in any place that you go to. there are a lot of beautiful places that you can visit in the philippines such as boracay, palawan, cebu, ilocos region, etc. you can take philippine airlines. :-) |

it's very safe. i would take cathay pcific, even though it could be pricey depending on when you go, they give complimentary drinks and they give free cup noodles whenever you ask for it. it's the best. if you have every taken british airways, it is basically the same thing because they are owned under the same company thing |

Yes it's safe 4 Americans but only if they buy one way tickets(the American embassy will bring the bodies home).
The best airline that I have found for Americans is Air Al Queida as they don't have luggage searches. |
