Ha! Is the person who wrote the first answer being serious??? She must be living as a hermit underground.

Ok, no one can say with any certainty whether anywhere is safe. I mean, you can get killed in your own home nowadays. But if we forget these extreme situations, bangkok is as safe as any big city. I`m female and spent about 2 months of last year there on my own. The biggest danger I would say is the traffic but whether or not you`re alone to have problems with it is irrelevant. The biggest danger for a solo woman traveller is like anywhere, getting unwanted attention from men. I did get a lot of stares while I was out there but nothing serious ever happened to me. In fact, I`ve had more problems in london and tokyo than I have in Bangkok. As for the language barrier, sure there is one but a lot of people speak english in Bangkok and most would be keen to help you.

Just a few tips while you`re out there:

Don`t say you`re travelling alone... say you are at the moment but you`re meeting a friend later.

Never agree to go anywhere a stranger has recommended... they may seem genuine but hardly ever are.

If you`re going to ride in a tuk tuk then always agree to the fare beforehand and don`t let them stop off anywhere where they can get commission. Saying that, one of my best days in bangkok was when the driver and I agreed to a deal beforehand... we spent the day going to lots of tailors and gem shops so he could get commision... in return I went to lots of temples and sites and didn`t have to pay a thing!

If travelling on the train or bus always keep valuables on you... a lot of things get stolen if you stow them away.

Always check that the lock works on your bedroom door and take a spare padlock just in case.

As for bombings... they have mainly been in southern thailand. Sure, there have been a couple in bangkok over the years but that`s the case with nearly all major cities so you really shouldn`t worry about it.

Let me know if you need any advice on places to stay etc.... If you`re planning on staying on the Khoa san I`d recommend you stay 3mins away on soi rambutri which is a lot nicer. Have a great time out there... I`m so jealous!

You are talking about bombing in Hatyai yet you are asking about safety in Bangkok.

YES! It is safe

It is like you are in Florida and asking if it is safe to go to San Franciso because there was a drive by murder in Las Vegas.
The bombing in the south is localised and it is not an issue in Bangkok.

Bangkok is as safe as any other big cities. However, NO ONE can say that no bad thing will happen to you in Bangkok. It could happen to you anywhere in the world (you could get hit by a bus tomorrow)

Exercise normal safety precautions as you would travelling anywhere.

Go! Have fun.

I'm surprised by some of the reactions to your question. I spent 10 days in Bangkok, a young single woman, completely alone !!
I must admit I didn't go to the red light district but apart from that Bangkok is one of the safest cities in the world. Statistically you have more chance X 10 being mugged in Mexico City, Paris or New York, than in Bangkok. The Thai people are incredibly gentle ! As always, you shouldn't walk around blind folded but believe me it is a very safe place. The terroist threats are in the far south of the country as there is a large muslim community there. People in Bangkok are mostly Buddhist (very peaceful).
The biggest dangers in Bangkok would be food poisoning (avoid street vendors) or being bitten by a stray, hungry dog. There are many in Bangkok and they roam around at night. 1 out of a 100 have rabies. If you do get bitten by a dog you have 24 hours to get yourself to a hospital for a vaccination. Bangkok hospitals are very well equipped against this.
Don't worry!! When you worry whilst travelling you attract problems.
P.S. Oh by the way, I think it is one of the most fascinating cities on earth (that I've seen at least anyway)

Definitely Bangkok is a safe place, but as usual, always take care yourself when traveling.

Don't worry about the bombings in the south, as they are far removed from Bangkok. However, there was an important judicial ruling here yesterday (May 30) that may prompt protest and possibly unrest in Bangkok. Bangkok is a huge city and you probably will not be affected, but it is best to stay far away from any protests or demonstrations should you encounter them. Have fun.

It's as safe as any big city in the worldo--moreso, I think. I feel safer in Bangkok than New York City, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Buens Aires, San Francisco, Dallas, Atlanta etc.etc.etc. Wherever you are you have to use common sense and remain in control of yourself and aware of your surroundings.

Bangkok is ok, just stay away from those street demonstration if you encounter any. Otherwise, Bangkok will be fine for tourist still.

Jason W
yes it is safe to travel there...i've been going there for 9years and never had a problem

dave o
there are bombings and shootings in the southern provinces every day that go unreported in western media. If you haven't got specific business in Hat Yai I wouldn't go there but Bangkok is nowhere near the southern unrest. It's like not going to Aberdeen because of the London bombs The Thai authorities take the safety of foreign tourists and farang extremely seriously, probably more so than their own people.Happy travelling.

Max H
Even the red light areas should be pretty safe in bangkok but a little common sense should be all you need.

You should be physically safe its more lets con the stupid tourist stuff... ie insist on taxi meters not haglling.

Avoid TAT travel agents to book vip coach/buses go to the offical thail coach/bus terminls things like that.

I'm sure it's ok! There is no terrorist threats. But a single women is going to be vunerable wherever they go. Try and make friends with a group of girls on the plane. That way you will have a bit of safty by numbers. But do not take any thing from them at the airport!

Yes go. I went a few years back when there was alot of bombing near the boarder with Malaysia. Overlanding wasn't recommended but I did and survived. There wasn't the slightest hint of issues by the time i got there.

Yes, it's fine. Try and have somewhere booked to stay for the first night or so and stick to touristy places and you'll be fine.

Sniper
Try avoiding Thailand for now!

If you are a single woman, do not go!!!! If you have to go, contact your American Embassy immediately upon arrival, and find the nearest Western Hotel, like a Marriott or Sheraton and find someone - preferably another woman who speaks English, get a cell phone and her number in it and always talk to someone in English in the cab saying things like I will see you shortly, or I'll be there in a few minutes, etc. Never indicate you are travelling alone!!!

For anyone who cares - remember the young woman who disappeared in Aruba - considered safe, and she was with her girlfriends - my comment is for caution, and really applies anywhere a young woman traveling laone should consider. It just so happens she is asking about Bankok, it would be the same answer no matter where she goes - take precautions, don't be ignorant and that's it!

Hey, why the thumbs down??? Isn't my recommendation practical and protective???
