Yeah mate on the level its safe. Your biggest problem would be getting overcharged since your a foreigner but if your firm and know what the proper prices are then they won't screw with you. The place is really worth going in my opinion far to much fun and great things to miss out on from the word of people who haven't personally been there. I go there twice a year because its seriously one of the best places on earth to visit. |

i hate when people generalized mindanao especially those people that never been to mindanao. Mindanao is very huge. Its the second biggest.. Not all in mindanao is bad. Example butuan city, cagayan de oro, davao its more safer there than MANILA. Yes there is part of mindanao thats bad its all the way on the end of mindanao its actually a separate island which is near Malaysia. Its called sulu, tawi tawi, basilan around thAt area is not good for tourist. But from Cagayan all the way to davao is pretty safe. My husband is white and he bought a house in Cagayan de oro because he loved it sooo much. Its not that over crowded like cebu or manila. The nature is beautiful and not commercialized. My husband didnt like manila because he felt like he was in Los Angeles where we actually live. So, he wanted more of nature not city. Also when he was in Manila someone stole his watch. We were in cagayan for a month walking at 3 am coming from the bar and he felt very safe(he's only 28 yrs old). Please dont generalize mindanao because its still Philippines and its still part of us.
And yes Philippines is very safe as long as you practice common sense like dont wave your dollar bills or wear big big gold chains. If you dont know anyone people will try to charge you more than usual, just becareful..
Happy trip |

generally, philippines is still safe for tourists.sometimes, the media exaggerates the news.
what is not advisable is for you to be going down south in some parts of Mindanao. leyte is far from Mindanao so no need to worry. |

yes it's safe there, the not-so-safe part of the philippines is somewhere in Mindanao which is far from Leyte... |

majority of the places is safe. like any countries, philippines have certain places that are also "not so friendly". all you need is really research thoroughly and ask the locals because they are the ones who really know the truth and not the media |

It is safe there if you keep your mind and eyes open. I never had problems there, even in poor parts of Manila at midnight. Just don't look stupid and like your lost or worried. Be confident. Filipinos are the most friendly people in the world. Don't worry about the things you hear in the news. A few problems exist in the extreme southern part of the country and it really doesn't concern foreigners. |

there's always a danger in every corner of each country... just try to avoid Southern Mindanao... just use your common sense, and try to be with someone you know who knows that place very well... |

Philippines is very safe, as a whole, there are only conflict on domestic violence in a certain ares in mindanao, but in leyte it is peaceful and safe. Welcome to the beautiful country of the Philippines. Mabuhay! |

What's up people from the Philippines :-) In fairness to some other answerer's that Mindanao is a dangerous place then let me enlighten you all.
I was born and raised in Mindanao, Davao City. The place where I came from is awesome with all the white sandy beaches across the islands which can be traveled by bangka for 15-30 minutes. Aguinaldo Pearl farm is one of the lovely tourist spots in Davao.
You can also check the website of Davao City in the internet and this will somehow give you some ideas that you might find suitable.

I'm not familiar with Tanauan Leyte. If you've ever been to the Philippines before, you know that it's actually safer in the provinces compared to Metro Manila. There is less crime, less pollution and less food poisoning. People are more relaxed there. However, the medical facilities may not have special equipment for emergencies, and banking may not be as sophisticated as you are used to.

Why are you gonna listen to people who might not have been to the country or just have something against the PI...Experience it for yourself, your an adult right so do the adult thing...I left when i was 12 and now am 36 and been there quiet a few times and been to the south end of the country Mindanao (supposedly where the Islamic people are hiding) but never had any problems when i went there, had more fun there than in Makati city (where i grew up)...I wouldn't know about Leyte, but you've got lots of foreigners all over the PI; if you bump into one then ask them if they feel alright traveling in the PI...Hopefully their not running back to the airport to fly back to their country of origin coz they feel unsafe...Good luck and have a fun trip |

OF COURSE! And trust me I know! I am Filipino Full Filipino! I know how to speak Tagalog and everything. Don't worry it IS safe. Try visiting San Luis, Batangas, Philippines though, because there, it's peaceful and beautiful! (in some parts though). And also try visiting Manila Bay, Manila, and Mandaluyong. There are a lot of malls there! But watch out in Mindanao and another island because there is a war! But Luzon Island is safe. Luzon island has all the towns and cities I recommended. |

I think that's not very far from Tacloban. Its as safe as anywhere. Just don't venture far off the beaten path in the mountainous areas. The statue of Douglas Macarthur is still standing. (In Leyte) As long is it is there I feel ok about being there too. I live in Southern Leyte for months at a time. Never had a problem. |

I have lived in Iloilo City Philippines (Island of Panay) since 2002 with my wife. I have traveled all over the main island of Luzon and other nearby islands here in the visayas (Guimeras, ******). I feel perfectly safe here and never had a problem. I am 6"2 and weigh 260 lbs , so I stick out like a sore thumb.
I avoid the western side of mindano (split the island in half from Davo) and the sulu archepelico. That's also the area that the U.S. Embassy warns about.
Anyplace else I don't see a problem. It's been my experiance that generally Filippino's are very nice and friendly people. |

Luzon and Visayas are safe and some northern parts of Mindanao. Lower parts of Mindanao will be dangerous because there is a war going on between the AFP and the MILF. |

The only really dangerous places are the islands or areas where the Muslim extremists live. My dad and I were in Bacolod airport and saw that some people were going to an island and my dad said that its crazy to go there if your not a muslim and that they might kill you.
I saw on TV Patrol that in those areas, they kidnapped some Americans, cut off their heads, and threw them into the market area. |
