No, that would be horrible! This law was passed in an attempt to control the overpopulation in China (in I think the 1990's). If a family does have a second child, the Chinese government simply imposes an extra tax on that particular family.

I’m really glad that someone asked this :]

I was born in China 1991 and lived there for the first 9 years of my life… and everyone (kids) was an only child. Here is the reason behind it, and try to look at it from an objective point of view…
- Ever since thousands of years ago, Chinese people always thought “the more, the better, especially sons”… now take a look at the population: 1.3 BILLION! About 20 years ago, the government saw this problem, and has decided to impose the “One Child Policy”.

- Here’s what actually happens…

1) Peasants/farmers – They don’t follow this policy *at all*. The government can’t control them (since many of them live in remote areas). They need all the kids they can to help with agriculture, and if they can’t get sons, they will keep trying. They usually do not get punished.

2) City residents – most of these people work for a company, and if they have a second birth (twins don’t count!), the company will fire them. Most people do NOT want a second born, especially if they’re in cities. Girls and boys are all treated alike, and most families prefer to focus on one child instead of a bunch. Multiple births are actually usually scorned upon. Ex: my mom’s friend (Chinese from the US) had an older girl and a younger son, and when she took them shopping, people thought she was a peasant who was sexist.

3) Business men/rich people – they can basically do whatever they want, since they are their own boss. They will not get fired, but they DO have to pay a heavy fine. My mom (who was a lawyer) had a friend who had 2 kids, and they joke that the younger boy was *bought*.

Now I hope you understand this a bit better. So many Americans think that the Chinese government is “oppressive and in humane”, but think about it… China can’t afford having every woman give birth to 3 kids. Right? And they definitely don’t kill children… although many people chose abortion.

mugenhunt
They don't kill it, but it is against the law to have more than one child. This is an attempt to solve the over population problem China has.

FALSE.

There is a minimum 10,000RMB fine per extra kid.

China has proclaimed that it will continue its one child policy, which limits couples to having one child, through the 2006-2010 five year planning period. The original policy was introduced in 1979.
If you are really interested, read the site I'm providing below.

I wanted to add this about Danielle P's comment....
Just because other countries may be less fortunate than ours, does not mean we are not concerned about our own!

whackiejackies
It is true about the one child policy. Having an abortion is very common in China, but if you do have another child, you gotta be prepared to support your child.

Mr. Taco
It is almost true. It is true that you are only allowed to bear one child unless you get special permission from the government, or if you have twins. It is only common sense, actually, because they have a serious overpopulation problem. It is not exactly true that they kill babies if the rule is broken. The government does not legislate the death of babies. The babies are simply taken and raised by the state, and the parents are punished. However, what often happens is that a family will kill a baby or another child to make sure the government does not get their baby or to protect themselves from prosecution. This is expecially true if their first child is a girl, and they would rather have a boy. Like any other culture, some men like to pass their genes on, and thus they prefer a boy. Although it is illegal, sometimes baby girls are killed in favor of baby boys. So what you say is part way true, and part way not true.

its not true. in china you can have 2 kids. you have to pay the government to be able to keep the second child. if you have a third and you keep it the penalty is death. you have the choice either you send the third to the orphanage or they kill him/her. I'm adopted from china so i know about this kinda stuff.

i hate phil collins
i'm pretty sure it's two children, and no they don't kill it.

after the second, next children are not able to get any social security. it's like they don't exist.

This is where the "partial-birth-abortion" got started.
When a child is born in some countries that are over populated, the midwives and nurses are required to make the judgement of whether that child is alowed to survive. Often if it is a girl, they immediately insert a needle into the brain stem so the baby wil die. It leaves no mark on the body, so parents can be told the child was born dead.

Your allowed 2 children for population control. If the first is a girl, then the second better be a boy otherwise they do kill it in order to allow for another shot at a boy to carry the family name.

sellatieeat
Its true taht you can only one child due to the growing population in China. I'm not sure what they do to the other kid if you do have another one. All i know is that you can get into some serious trouble if you do. My friend was the "illegal" second child and their family moved out of china to US right away.

aznjenny28
no, of course not. people often have abortion or if you are rich all you have to do is to pay alot of money to have your second child because of over population. but if you live in more of country side of china then it doesn't matter because no one checks on you.

napalm_bunny
The government won't kill it, but you have to pay a fine.

Many families still want to have a male to pass on the family line, so they kill the baby if it's female.

I do know that they are over populated and there are children committing suicide.
Placement is minimal in colleges because of the over population. The intelligent students that can't be placed in colleges feel they won't have a future.
As far as killing babies of families with more than one child, I'm not sure.

It used to be against the law ~ now they just frown on it. Most city families still only have one child ~ a male to carry on the family name. Country families are allowed to have more than one child to help in the fields. They say that selective abortion is illegal, but it is still done.
Here's a fun fact ~ there are 20 million (yes, I said million) single Chinese males with no hopes of a wife or family. Guess what they are doing??? Joining the military. So, 20 million (yes, again, 20 million) Chinese men with no sex life ~ what to do, what to do ~ go to war. We need to watch out for them, and not just the Arabs.

James
yes it is true. let presume you are 7month pre. and they catch u. you are send to the hospital for abortion.

let presume that you manage to bypass 9 month of hidding period, and deliver a baby. u will be fine for xxx amount of money (i forgot the amount, i remember it is 50000)

all catched female are to undergo "what is that medical term call? tie up so that would get pren again".

i,m here if you need to talk.
that.s why they move to the u.s.a. or canada the part of only one child is true but the killing was true in the pass but i don,t know a bout the killing now a days.

Kitty, Kitty Cat
yeppers sure is true. In India...they allow abortions almost up to time of birth if it's a girl. We were studying that in my Sociology class...this women had 7 abortions each at 6-7 months pregnant when the sex of the child is determined b/c they were all girls.
