Actually yes. It shows that your body liked the meal and that it was very delicious. But, you need to be careful, because in modern Chinese families, this old custom is not recognized. If you go to China, most restaurants and families don't mind this repulsing. Burp it up!'
-Hope this helps :] |

I have lived in China five years. I have never heard anyone say that. I am willing to bet your teacher has never lived here. I am a teacher myself and was once married to a Chinese woman. It is NOT offensive for someone to burp in China, but neither is it seen as a compliment. |

sure.If i have a meal with a familiar friend of mine.and I am full up and have a loud burp, I will make no attempt to veil my impression on the delicious food.
If the one who cooks the food is not too familiar.
I will say "yum, you are really capable".
Instead, If i cook the food for guests, I hear a burp sound.
I will be very pleased, this hints that they enjoy the food. |

Not at all! That's disgusting! Only uneducated people do that. |

I have been living here in northeast China for almost three years, and I have not heard anyone burp on purpose. If it was a custom, it is out of date. |

It sometimes means you like the food, sometimes means you eat too much and sometimes means your stomach is not very well. |

Once upon a time, this was true. But not true any more. So when you eat with Chinese, don't do that. |

I have lived in southern China for 2.5 years and no one has ever done that. If you finished your meal, looked right at the cook or waitresses and burped, they'd probably think you were quite rude. |

Yes! It's tradition (but probably not recognized by everyone). My best friend growing up was chinese american and her mom was from taiwan and when I would go over to their house to eat-- man would she rip them! It was so shocking and hilarious to see an adult doing this like it was the normal, proper thing to do. Finally I asked my friend about it and she told me the louder you burp, the more it means you liked the food! |
