not all west malaysians are that ignorant. My best buddies are east malaysians. I never segregate them as east malaysians or west malaysians. we are all the same.. we share jokes and they taught me all the bad words and we had the wildest times of our lives whenever we go partying or just staying home gossiping. i visit their house over christmas and they came over during aidilfitri. My guestroom were never empty as they always spend the night after some scrabble challenge we usually had.
Back to your question, I always thought it is the other way around. Whenever i step foot in Kota Kinabalu or Kuching i always get a stare, I thought the east malaysians didnt like us very much. :) Peace!! So arent we all the same? |

And there are some West Malaysians when asked, "What's the most Eastern state in Malaysia?"
Their answer - "Pahang"..... |

it true. alot west m'sian look down on east malaysia i.e. sarawak and sabah. But most economic is from east malaysia. more then 70% of the malaysia economic is from east like oil and gas, timber, oil plam, etc. if east malaysia din't join west malaysia, i guest west malaysia will be very poor. |

AQ says it all but I still think West Malaysians are more racist than those from the East. Many Sabahan/Sarawakians often tell me how much they missed home and how ill-treated they are in the West/Semenanjung.
Miza Eli, when you talk about Malaysian citizenship, do you know that Malaysians in the East (Sabah/Sarawak) are being profiled differently from those in Semenanjung? You might want to check out their ICs and ask them of the situations they've encountered which involved ICs in Semenanjung if they're from Sabah/Sarawak.
So much for 'Bangsa Malaysia'... your integrity is NOT counted for. |

All West Malaysians will tell you it's not true (>>Malaysian denial). But as an independent observer (a non-Malaysian) who has been dealing a lot with both, East and West Malaysians, all I can tell you is that some of West Malaysians do look down on East Malaysians and some of them don't. More people look down on the natives than on Malays or Chinese from East Malaysia. But I really don't know to what proportion.
I know an Iban woman married to a Malay from Terengganu and his family treated her like crap and bullied her just because she's an Iban. I've also met a West Malaysian tourist who says he is afraid to eat in East Malaysia and says he cannot trust East Malaysians. Well, he's some kampung retard from Negeri Sembilan, so I don't think his opinion can be generalised.
I think most of West Malaysians don't look down on East Malaysians, but Sarawakians call West Malaysians "lepeh", which means cocroach, thanks to army who brought bad reputation to West Malaysians in Sarawak. However, with arrival of civilians from West Malaysia things have smoothened and Sarawakians are now generally accepting towards others. But of course everything should be referred to individual basic.
Why? Because people are different and most of people consider their culture superior. Some Malaysians look down on Indonesians, some even look down on the West, although the West is far more developed than Malaysia. There is something called "arrogance". And that's the reason why people look down on each other.
Supposely, East Malaysia is less developed than West Malaysia and it is, as West Malaysians plunder their natural resources and that's why Hasanal Bolkiah was smart enough not to join Brunei wtih Malaysia in 1984 when Mahathir was persuading him to join. East Malaysia is richer in natural resources, primarily oil and timber, but West Malaysia has more knowledge to use it. Sarawak still imposes working permits and visas on West Malaysians, while Sarawakians are allowed to work freely in West Malaysia.
So let's call it a tie: there are negative actions from both sides, while looking down on East Malaysians depends on every individual. |

I'm west malaysian and I dun look down on east malaysians. In fact, I wan to go there someday on a long visit. But i dun understand why we need our passport to enter Sabah & Sarawak.... I think that is odd since it's malaysia. I understand a lot of their daily necessities are higher priced too.... Like newspapers, magazines, toiletries, etc.... So there is nothing to look down upon.
And the states are so full of culture and nature. |

hmm..maybe because most of the developments are in west malaysia..not east malaysia..
also..a lot of ppl in east malaysia still practices spiritual thing they say 'bomoh' or 'pawang'...they maybe some in west malaysia but not many.. |

To look down to other just because they born in east Malaysians and grown up there, it's really a sad thing to admit it. For me, as long as we are Malaysians, doesn't matter which part you came from, is what your identity as Malaysia citizen and YOUR integrity is count for. i'm born in Penang and have been to Sabah (kota kinabalu, kundasang, ranau and gunung kinabalu) once, last year. It's so great to been in Sabah, which the local people there is very kind and always give a helping hands to whom need it.
A fren of mine is from sarawak, and it's very nice to knowing her, for her humbleness and friendly to everybody around her. So I feel that everyone from Sarawak it's as just as wonderful like her. Hey, not everybody is perfect rite, so we should 'nt mind to give and take |

if West Malaysians count Sabah and Sarawak to Malaysia, then that is already a good start... but unfortunately it happens still now, I have had the experience myself, I was asked: "when you finish your studies (in Peninsular Malaysia), do you stay in Malaysia or do you go back to Sabah?" Not only once, and not 30 years ago, that was 5 years ago! Oh, well, Borneo is far away but since people live in trees you should expect everybody to look UP at us... I think Sabah and Sarawak are simply not really well known amongst many West Malaysians. Once they discover Borneo they will never look down at us, that I have experienced, too! |
