Mostly very safe.

But crowded train is filled with the sexual molester (called "chikan" in Japanese), so daily train travel not so nice for the woman.

Situation actually so bad that the many train service is offering the "women-only" car on the train to escape these pervert.

Japan is one of the safest countries in the world. It has an extemely low crime rate, and even walking at night is safe. Of course, still use common sense as you would in a less safe area.

Safe as safe can be. Much safer than some places in the U.S.

Bugaisha
Let's see. Yearly average...
Murders:
USA: 12,568
Japan: 637
Rapes:
USA: 89,110
Japan : 2,260
Total crimes:
USA: 23,677,000
Japan: 2,443,470
God bless America !

How safe is it?
So safe that you can leave your luggage unattended and 20 minutes later you're still going to find it untouched even in the middle of the city.
Either that or it'll end up with the police lost and found.

It does sit on the Ring of Fire, where the tectonic plates cause all sorts of volcanic activity, earthquakes, and tsunamis. On the other hand, it's been there for hundreds of millions of years and will probably be there for at least another 400 million years or so.

probably among the safest places in the world currently!

It is a very safe place in comparison to inner cities in the U.S., but no country is 100%. There is crime in every country, Japan just has a very low amount. I grew up there, and as a child I could go anywhere alone with complete confidence.

hadassah
I believe it's one of the safer places in the world,
but expensive,
and you have to be sensible and not go wandering around alone at night etc.
i don't think the world itself is particularly safe, I've been nearly killed by a car in Australia but travelled through China and Ecuador without a problem

..........some general links on Japan you might have already seen......
