The term "Third World" is not universally accepted. Some prefer other terms such as - Global South, the South, non-industrialized countries, developing countries, underdeveloped countries, undeveloped countries, mal-developed countries, emerging nations. The term "Third World" is the one most widely used in the media today, but no one term can describe all less-developed countries accurately.
Third World, the technologically less advanced, or developing, nations of Asia, Africa, and Latin America, generally characterized as poor, having economies distorted by their dependence on the export of primary products to the developed countries in return for finished products. These nations also tend to have high rates of illiteracy, disease, and population growth and unstable governments.
However, only economist used this term to describe the economic status of one country. I love my country Philippines, and hopefully one day, we can have a better goverment to get us out of this economic mess.

Yes it is, but the good thing is the economy is getting stronger(to the above poster compare at Thailand and Philippine stock), business is booming, Forbes also named the Philippine peso as the most promising currency in the world (last year), and wonderful tourism spots. The problem is the unstable government, corruption, and poverty. but all countries will face, this look at Japan in 1945 and look at it now or Singapore in the 1980 and now.

philippines is definitely a third world country...as a matter of fact, the economy and government is soooo bad that if their was such a thing as a fourth world county, philippines would be on the top of the list....I am filipino, I was born their and I still go visit their from time to time...

What is third world country? Poor countries? Everything outside USA? It is island-country in Asia, where most of the population are catholics, I think.

i'm from the philippines... u couldn't even wear any real jewelry for fear of getting urself killed by sombody tryin to steal it.

From an economist point of view, the Philippines is considered a third world country due mainly to its high debt and capacity to pay off loans. Currently the country's debt is nearing the trillion mark with no signs of abating. In addition, the political situation is not stable as compared to developed countries, its more to each his own thing rather than for the good of the country...

Sad to say, its the politicians and their policies that is preventing the country from moving ahead.

I am 1/4 filipino, i try not to think the of Pilipinas as a 3rd world country, but, really it sorta is, Mainly around parts where there aren't many services, but it just really depends.

yah i think...... i know this country..... i live in the philippines.........

Well
francisval2003, what are you talking about????? The Philippines by clear definition is a Third world country. Maybe you personally are wealthy but 80% of your compatriots are living in abject and desperate poverty. That's all the proof anyone needs. Period. Open you eyes. Listen to the cries of your neighbors, my friend.

Adam
I think it depends on where in the Philippines you vist.

Boracay is one of it's biggest tourist destinations. It is far from having 3rd world status. It is very nice and many people visit it every year.

Parts of the Philippines are very poor.

All in all, I've only heard good things about the country. I don't like hearing about references like 3rd World Country. I'd like to visit one day.

what is the definition of a third world country?
This a country where people are still laughing amidst of too much problem, where people can still sleep/rest any time/day even if don't have any money or food,
Where people borrow money so they can gamble but not to buy food.
Where people celebrate fiestas, birthday or any other occasion by borrowing money from a "BOMBAY"
Where people show off there priced jewelry so that other people can notice it.
Where gossip is the number one past time of the Filipino's
so do i know this country, YES i live here most of my life.

lepactodeloupes
compare to chine us yes the phil. is a poor country but it is heaven or paradaise for us the tragic part is it is governed by the most inteligent leaders whose person agenda comes first and last in thier daily life as leader of this nation

IRconX
Philippines is not that poor! Even the poor have cell phones, TV's, access to water and etc.

Ethan
What Ms. Herbie said is true. The term "Third World" is outdated and shouldn't even be used anymore. The Philippines is a developing country and with its high literacy rate and competent work force, the Philippines will be a country to be admired in the near future. The Philippines is a great country to live in if you have a college degree and the work ethics to boot. Just like in any other country, if you work hard you will have a great job and life. It's the same in the Philippines.

the one about the cellphone is so true! people do get killed protecting their cellphones!

the term "third world" is so outdated, and has been since the collapse of the soviet union. it's preferable to describe the economic situation of the philippines as "developing."

some parts of the country are very cosmopolitan and very rich (like makati business district, Fort area, some parts of Quezon City etc.) which is in contrast with a lot of rural areas. but the philipines, with its warm weather, friendly people, and interesting nightlife is a pretty good place.

I'm a filipino and you know what Philippines in NOT a third world country, only poor filipinos tells that this country is a poor country cause they just see what's on their enviroment but when you move out of that enviroment I'm sure they'l know what's behind of what they see

definitely. i don't know of any other place where you can lose 5 cellphones in 1 and a half years to knife-wielding men, pickpockets and bag slashers. where else will you also find students being murdered trying to hold on to their most-prized possession - their cellphones.
