Prostitution is a problem everywhere in the world and I'll give you examples based on real life cases:
1) A husband who's secretly hooked on hookers can give his wife STD and that is a major problem. It doesn't only destroy his wife but his family as a unit. More than the STD it's the pain in knowing that a partner has been unfaithful to his wife and would rather spend attention and lots of money for cheap women rather than on her.
2) A prostitute can 'inspire' her children to become one too someday (easy money they say, but they don't see the consequences).
3) Once a prostitute, always a prostitute. I still have to see one who has completely stayed out of the profession and never returned. And this is a problem in the sense that they're exposing themselves to too much danger all their life. No doubt there are lots of pornstars who commit suicide.
4) Prostitution is linked to other illnesses of society such as drugs and alcoholism.
5) Prostitution can never buy dignity.
I don't condemn people who choose to be in that profession. They have their reasons why they do that. But I hope they could wisen up to save up and do better things in life. |

If you're against it, prostitution is a problem because it's OBVIOUS and prolific (think Angeles City, it's actually advertised). In the case of the Philippines, PROSTITUTION IS A PROBLEM and you should be against it because the prostitutes are generally EXPLOITED teenagers forced into it by absolute poverty and have very little social resources (it's different than, say, in the States). No matter who or where you are child prostitution and sex slavery IS a problem.
If you're LOOKING for prostitution, it isn't a problem. However, knowing HOW to deal with a prostitute can be a problem (and expensive and sometimes dangerous). There will be many hands in the deal. If you don't want to deal with the bar or a mama-san, there are places that prostitutes go on thier day off to feel normal, I guess, or to "freelance". There are also 'normal' and educated women who prostitute themselves for extra money, as in the States.
Ask this: is prostitution legal or illegal in the Philippines? if it is illegal, are the laws enforced? is prostitution merely frowned upon by society and the law? is it allowed by ignorance or denial?
BTW, Mr Sex Tourist, there is no argument. Sex tourism, in the Philippines, is absolute exploitation; not a matter of values, morals or religion, just a matter of right vs wrong. Exploitation in any form is wrong. Take that!!! ... go to Las Vegas or Amsterdam and pay the $$$ you sick cheap bastard. |

Prostitution is always blamed on foreigners in PI but it's verywhere even in towns like Solano (the "Roof top" bar) and in fact most bars in provinces are some sort of prostitute bar. |

Alex, it is a problem everywhere. It is usually a bigger problem in places were the dollar has big spending power and where military bases or tourist spots are located. It is a supply and demand issue. |

It could a problem through out the world and much in the developing countries leading to many sexually transmitted diseases. Again I would not blame the prostitutes, it could be because they have no other option in life for living!. If it is for luxury they die every night than that is something beyond my thinking. |

Not just in the Philippines but everywhere. Some people uses different terms to make it not obvious coz prostitution word is so old.Hookers, escort service are one of the other term but basically the same. The movie ''Pretty Woman'' by Julia Roberts is just an example that prostitution is not just in the Philippines. |

Prostitution only seems to be a problem to those who think it is morally wrong. It is a service, why is the act of sex considered any more "special" than other services? We now live in a time when precautions can be taken to prevent pregnancy and disease, so what is the big deal? If the women is of age and makes that choice, so be it. How many people actually become what they dreamt of when they were children?
I realize it is economics that may force those into prostitution, but what about other jobs that people do not like and do it just for the money, there are plenty of those. In a perfect world everyone would be able to do whatever they would like, but we do not live in a perfect world and the money that these prostitutes make help to feed and care for their families. Many of them may one day marry one of their customers and live a better life. As long as there is no abuse and the women are taken care of and treated with respect then it is an agreement between two adults. Is it really any different than women in developed countries who want to know how much money a man makes before they will date them? There are many women who use sex as a way to get what they want, why not condemn them, aren't they supposed to know better? |

People who force their morality on others, is the problem. If someone wanted to buy sex and the other person was willing to give it, then what's the problem? You can buy things and you can have sex, but you can't do those things at the same time? I don't get that. Personally, I never did that, but I just don't see the problem with it.
Also what pisses me off are these blatant lies that these moral crusaders try to spread by trying to get rid of prostitution, like forced sex slaves in Angeles, please tell me anytime there was a real situation involving sex slaves (post links, pls)? Slandering an entire city (Angeles) by releasing a bias report and disguising as legit, that Angeles is the source of AIDS in Phils. Please get off your high horses. |

IT seems the people answering most of your question seem to feel prostitution is fine ! So for them they would not see it a problem at all.If you are brought up with moral identity then you would consider it a problem . SOrry I do consider prostitiution a problem and don't glamourize it .First many of those women are forced into prostitution and their is alot of children sold into prostitution as well.EasilEasily looked up in many documetaries...
Its sad that some travellers purposly go into those area for prostitutes....these women are not doing it by choice many like I said are enslaved into it |

i agree with....wtf up there..... i honestly don't think. people would say ....when i grow up i wanna be a prostitute....people only do it for the money and wish they didn't have to..there is not enough jobs.....and yes to your question.. it has been a problem for many years.. i believe it is the oldest profession.. |

it is problem anywhere.
as for the philippines, it is a very big problem.
if not for tourists, who'd look for them, that problem might not be as worse as it is right now. foreigners are there number one customers. in cebu city, americans, a few europeans and koreans are very notable in any bars (u know what bars it is) you will go to.
i hate foreigners in my country who looks for sex. |

Alex, you need to categorize your question. I mean what would constitute a problem to you? With your answer on this, we could give a better response to your question.
E.g. Is prostitution a social problem in the Philippines, causing strains in the moral fiber of society in general?
E.g. Is prostitution a health problem for the general population - proving that prostitutes are the main cause of the spread of venereal diseases? |
