Yes. There's always a chance for everyone. We just don't know when. Besides Philippines has a potential for becoming a first world country. We have the adequate resources, man-power and access to trade (because of our geographical location). We just need more investments. |

It all depends to it's citizen. When all the overseas workers return to the Philippines and apply all the knowledge they've acquired, together as one to unify the goal and achieve it without complain but with vision. |

Why not?
The future belongs to Asia and Asian countries. The US, which is the world's largest economy, has slowed down on growth since the last few years due to political and economic reasons- least of which is the sustained war in Iraq and Afghanistan which are draining that country of precious resources, especially its younger citizens.
Europe has an ageing population and the birth rate is alarmingly low. Japan is a dying giant, being overtaken rapidly by countries such as India and China- which have emerged as the world's largest consumer markets and are well on way to emerge as the two leading global economies.
Asia (Middle East) is also the world's single largest source of energy (oil& gas).
The growth and economic boom in India and China combined with the development in the Middle East will propel other Asian countries, including the Philippines to emerge as a First World country within the next two decades.
Of course, the march towards being a First World country is not going to be easy for the Philippines considering the current state of affairs, especially where exported manpower are the single largest source of foreign exchange for the country.
However, the spillover from the Asian giants will definitely propel the Philippines to emerge as a First World country BUT only if issues such as corruption and insurgency, which now plague the republic, are effectively handled and incentives are offered for Filipino nationals to develop their own country. Urgent steps to prevent brain drain is needed.
For example: Would it not be better if the Philippines developed its own healthcare sector and facilities with the qualified doctors and nurses etc and attracted foreigners to undergo treatment in the Philippines rather than Filipino doctors and nurses traveling abroad to work in foreign hospitals?
There are numerous indicators that show that the Philippines can graduate within a decade to a Second World country. Bu as I said before, there are various domestic issues that need to be tackled. |

There is a big chance that the Philippines will be among the first world countries..If only those greedy corrupt politician were not on their positions, we could have been a first world country by now..
In the first 6 years of the Marcos administration, our country's economy boomed and rank second (behind Japan) in Asia's biggest ecomnomies..The exchange rate is 7 pesos to a dollar which is the all-time high in the history of our country..
And the Filipinos' dream of becoming a first world will be sooner because the Philippines is part of the N-11 (Next 11) alongside with South Korea and Mexico that analyst says that will overtake the G-8 economies and even challenge the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China).. |

why not? back in the 50's or 60's i think, we ranked first in Asia in terms of economic growth.
we could do it again.
discipline is the key. |

We are an archipelago, and as a people, we viewed ourselves as one country not during the spanish and american colonization , but rather 1946 when America gave us full autonomous elections. So we have only about 60 years as a Filipino "democracy". For the U.S. it is 1776 , so thats 230 years, Japan more than 500 years, Singapore about 40 years ( but then they are not yet rated 1st world as you categorize it).Give it another 100 years of this free wheeling independence and Filipino democracy ,and I know we will be first world someday. That is just a guess though. There should have been a bloodletting in Feb. 1986 and the process of being first world would have speeded it ( just like the American civil war where thousands died needlessly.)But there was no blood spilled and thousands of bad and good people still live and now we do not even celebrate the Feb. 1986 peaceful revolution.People just do not care ,there are no deaths to remember. One man"s death as Ninoy have, was only the reawakening, there should have been thousands of deaths for everybody to recall. This I blame not to Marcos, bec. he gave the order to shoot, but rather to his Christian soldiers!!! We do not massacre our own kind, but instead we we steal,we become dishonest, we do not think through our objectives for the common good, we are crabs in the basin of this archipelago, but someday there will be a reckoning, and then we will change for the better. When we attain that , then we will be a first world country. 200 years???I am certain not in my lifetime though! So I plan to immigrate to America and join my daughter as an American citizen maybe next year! |

First of all, may I congratulate you on the question which is very good, and your good fortune in having such a variety of answers above.
I would have begun this answer with a comic question: "Will you be interested in investing in my aircraft carrier built with katig?", but I seem to mellowing down, and I shall answer seriously.
If the cost to being a first-world country is to bathe the country in blood, I hope we never become one.
If, on the other hand, we rise in glory because of charity and moderation, I think we're on the way, if not right there already. |

I don't know. Not in my lifetime though. The country has lots to do: institute reforms, do a lot of overhauling in its system, change attitudes, work and toil harder, do economic strategies to win more international businesses and re-package the country's image to make it attractive to foreign investors. It will take years to do that and a good leader to initiate such moves. We had our chance, decades ago, to become a first world country however, some greedy people couldn't help but put their fingers into what isn't theirs for the taking and bankrupted the country. Now, we and the several generations after us, have to pay for debts that the country did not benefi from. |

It is possible. However, it seems as if the bar and sex industry seems to be booming there in a high and astonishing rate. It has also been pr oven that women have moved above men in the status of education and corporate world. I understand people will do whatever is required to survive and excel. It is sad to see the morals thrown aside to gain financial growth.
The corruption within the government will never help matters. It would be nice to see the money within the system be used for the good of the people and not to but a new car for a politician. |
