Is water from faucet safe?

Is the water from the faucet, tap, in China clean? Especially in the city. Beijin, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, etc.
How about the soup in restaurant?
I like China, but, I worry about their future and citizen' life. about expats in there as well.

Not if you are from the US.

Its safe for the Chinese, however your body is not used to it and you can get really sick from it. I would not risk it if I were you.

NEVER drink water from a faucet, whether you are in a big or small city. Drinking unpurified water can cause serious diseases such as disentry, cholera and typhoid, etc. If you have no access to bottled water, bring a water purifiying kit containing iodine or chlorine, or boil the water.Purify water by:
-Using water purification tablets. (Follow the directions provided.)
-Placing 5 drops of 2 percent tincture of iodine in a canteen full of clear water. If the canteen is full of cloudy or cold water, use 10 drops. (Let the canteen of water stand for 30 minutes before drinking.)
-Boiling water for 1 minute at sea level, adding 1 minute for each additional 300 meters above sea level, or boil for 10 minutes no matter where you are.

I live in Shanghai and there are inexpensive bottled water service for RMB14. They last me for about a week (I think they are 3.2 gallons).

There was once when I did ran out of water and I had to drink the water directly from the faucet but I boiled them first. Most Chinese I know that can afford bottled water, will drink bottled water.

Maybe the water is clean but in a lot of apartment complexes, the piping are old and rusted out so why take the chance. The water quality in Shanghai at least is pretty good.

Well, I won't do so. The problem is the tube carrying the water from where it's sterilized to your tap would probably be older than you in general. It's much safer to drink boiled water.

Sadly, in many cases, bottled water is not that 'clean' as well. You may need to go for something more reliable. For me, I would rather drink coke or Perrier...

anyone who says it's safe to drink faucet water in china has never been there. there is a reason that everyone has purified water bottles in their homes. it took less than 5 minutes for me to be sick after drinking water from a tap in a 5 star hotel in beijing. bottled water is fine or if you can boil the water, say in a coffee pot in a hotel room, otherwise as they say in mexico............don't drink the water.

aztec_68
No, some areas are not dependable, drink only bottled water most restruants use it
