i dont think its such a big problem...as long as they're not making fun of the language. i think the bigger problem these days are for example, a malay is in a group of 5 and the rest are all chinese...the chinese will tend to converse in mandarin, leaving the odd guy hanging....and this is common with the other races as well...i think people should be considerate. |

I am not a Malay but i don't see any Malay who are offended by the way some non-Malays speak their language. On the contrary i think most Malays are proud that their language is being spoken by non-Malays.
However I do notice Malays tend to speak the language differently to non-Malays than speaking to Malays |

Do you speak Chinese to the Chinese or Hindu or Tamil to the Indians? Try and see how fluent do you get. |

at least they have effort to speak other language...
what if Malay speak other language than Malay...suppose same thing would happen...
unless they are mastering in that particular language...
learning new language is not that simple... |

I don't think so, occasionally my Malay friends & co-workers do correct me in my Malay especially certain business terms & etc. I do ask them if it's pronounce this way or that too.
Maybe the others correct the English here, so that International users can reply better or understand better. Bear in mind, there are many Malay YA! users that aren't brought up or live locally. |

Im a Malay. Oh yes! I guess almost all Malays are proud that the Malay language is used by non-Malays. Its in fact one of the language that is easy to learn and is very useful in Southeast Asia. Sometimes we correct them but most of the time as long as everybody understands whats the problem? Gd qn, dude! |

If I were to feel sensitive about how other non-native speaks my language, then I rather not grow up. The fact that the non-natives took so much effort in communicating the Malay language is already something to be proud of and so what if they twang it a little bit. That's what you call it the "Malaysian" language. A little bit of this and a little bit of that... its unique and you can't find it in any part of the world. |

lol as far as im concerned, those that you have mentioned are malays? well honestly, if we were to correct the slightest grammar mistake in english, i can pinpoint you to yours.
malaysia is a country that (un)fortunately has the greatest leniency with language inaccuracy. we are known (and heaven forbids, take pride in) our ability to mix match several languages. it is our identity.
im not saying that incorrect language use should be encouraged, but there is no need for a big hoo hah. we understand that each individual is raised in a different background and no one can speak a perfect language.
i think im repeating myself already. |

-even malays don't speak real malay.
-the standard bahasa melayu came from kepulauan riau in indonesia.
-there are many accent in malaysia. eg northern accent, perak accent, kelantan accent and terengganu accent.
-and im sure that 99% of malays speak according to their accent not the standard language.
-so, malays should practice to speak the standard language b4 advicing other races to speak malay more properly. |

Some are quite annoying but we get use to it. Besides, I treat it as 'they are trying to learn the language' so I don't get angry that often. And by the way, I am not a Malay. |

Cos the malay language is too primitive and lacks grammar. There's nothing to correct in the first place.
