Agree. Was both robbed at home and mugged on the streets last August and this January (a day after I moved to this part of the city, thinking it's safer) respectively. Now I'm paranoid about walking outside my house compound even though there are guards patrolling the area. Within the house, I have a dog, parameter sensors and CCTV. Talk about overkill...

from major crimes - i'd still say yes malaysia is pretty much a safe country

minor crimes - like thefts, burglary, no, it's kinda common in big cities especially

civil unrest - no we are at the peak of tension now.

terrorism - i'd still say we are safe

To be fair, we must talk in terms of degrees of safety, as there is really no place on Earth that is completely safe.I think, from all the reports i read from daily papers, Time, Newsweek over the past year, it is still a little safer than mid-east countries, Pakistan, some African nations, etc. There are numerous aspects of safety. One can even say the North-South highway isn't safe, as so many fatal accidents have occurred for the past year. So also are crimes, corruption, riots, etc which are also happening in other Asean and Asian nations. We just hope and pray that the leaders, ruling party and opposition are sensible and carry out a constructive and creative style of management to ensure that the needs of the citizens, regardless of race or religion, are met. We cannot afford to have more and more demonstrations and riots which can turn nasty and bloody. Responsible officials in each state must manage affairs fairly and efficiently without being heavy-handed. The leadership must set out its vision and viable goals for a re-making so as to bring about more efficient political, judicial, educational systems based on merit. Otherwise the 2020 target for a developed nation status towards political, economic and social harmony may not be achievable. Malaysia, like Indonesia, Thailand and Australia in the Asia Pacific region, has great potential to lead other lesser nations, but it has to learn how to manage its human resources well, besides its natural resources.

Generally, it is safe to live and travel in Malaysia. Of course one must also be careful and take safety measure to remain safe. Like do not be too showy or dress appropriately at the right places.

However, our safety level can be further improved with the police beefing up patrolling around the cities and residential areas. I find the paid security companies manning the residential areas in KL are not totally effective. They collect monthly subscriptions but the guards they employ are either quite old or not quite alert people. There are many cases of snatch thefts, car thefts and break-ins in my area.

Based on the current worldwide situation of high cost of living spiral led from the simple basic cost of rice and wheat will result many many empty stomach. Imagine a man with no job and a hungry family to feed, what do you think he has to do to stop this pitiful sight in his home?
My conclusion is, no place in the world is 100% safe anymore. Basically, I find Malaysia is a pretty safe place to holiday in but it all depends on the way we carry our ourselves. One will be asking for trouble if one dressed richly meaning a Gold Rolex watch, thick gold chain all over and thick wallet exposed to watching eyes then that person is asking for trouble not only in Malaysia but anywhere in the world.

Totally unsafe if you are outside your house ... I mean outside my house walls, I feel I am 'naked' and vulnerable as I might encounter snatch thieves, rapist, con salesman/woman, robber, road bully, mad fella etc ...

So I stay in my house most of the time .... and I hope this little bit of safeness will not be taken away too ....

Read somewhere that there was this force entry into a house, witnessed by neighbours who do nuthin about it ... probably they don't want to get 'troubles' in becoming witness for the police ...

nothing here is 100% safe. All u need is to be careful (like prevent crimes - dont wear expensive stuff) and seek help from God

In the old days, crimes are almost unheard of. Maybe coz they are hardly reported in the daily news. Now it is getting rampant, reported in the daily news, some wasnt reported at all.

People themselves adopted 'tidak apa' attitude. If they themselves took extra precaution, crime rate will not be so high. Better be safe than sorry. Do not trust strangers easily. For example; irresponsible parents who let their 5 yr old child playing unattended in the nearby field, parents who make their 11yr old cycle to the shop to buy a pack of salt, parents who allow their children go to the pasar malam alone. If a child is missing, it is nobody's fault but the parents. Basically, if u treasure your child, do not leave them on their own. Always watch them like a hawk, ok. Children are not able to think for themselves.

Snatch theft; this can be avoided if the victim stayed away from standing too close to the road curb/pavement. Keep an eye on boys on motorbikes nearby. If they knew u were watching them, they might forget their intention to rob u. They snatch your bag when u are not looking.

House break-ins, install an alarm system.

Dont blame everything on the police. Of course sometimes u see them committing crime themselves e.g; not wearing seatbelt, parking anywhere they like etc. What I am trying to say is, u cannot fully rely on them. You yourselves need to be extra careful as to not attracting unwanted crime.

I dont want to point finger here but crimes are often rampant in the area where there are construction works going on. Given the fact that there are millions of them overstaying illegally in our country. How do you think this people survive.

In KL Sentral itself where theres a police post, pickpockets are everywhere. Mainly done by Indonesian women. While u were busy shopping in the cramp stall, they would push u aside as if they are trying to pass by you in the cramp alley. Next thing u knew, your wallet/mobile phone is missing.

In Giant Shah Alam, I was having my meal with my little baby in the stroller. Two Indonesian boys took notice of me and my opened handbag ( I didnt realise it was open). Maybe they also saw big rocks on my ring finger. First they sat next to me and my baby. They kept on watching us. Then I got up and left. Then they followed me around waiting for the right moment to strike. I had to turn around a couple of times giving them a look, everytime I turned they pretended they were looking at the stalls. Finally after I asked them what they wanted, they ran off.

But that still wont beat a guy pointing his gun right on my forehead in Manila infront of the Hard Rock Cafe. Why he did that u ask me? He did that just because I ignored his dancing invitations and drink offer the whole night. We dont have that problem here in KL. Not everyone here has a gun, thank god.

Crime can be avoided sometimes. Be extra careful.

I would tell you more but then my question would be deleted because some people could not accept one particular fact about this country . My question about whether Islam is the official religion of the country has been deleted because some people feels that it insults them.
