Text messages warning of a powerful quake Wednesday night a hoax - Phivolcs
05/14/2008 | 05:04 PM
MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) sought Wednesday afternoon to allay fears caused by text messages circulating about a supposedly powerful quake that was to strike the country in the evening.
In a radio interview, Phivolcs' Isabel Abigania categorically said there is no truth to such text messages, saying there is currently no available tool that could be used to predict the occurrence of an earthquake.
Abigania also noted that Phivolcs is not aware of the entity United States Geological Society, wjhich is the supposed source of the text messages.
"Ipinapaalam namin sa publiko walang katotohanan ang text na kumakalat sa lindol na mangyayari mamayang gabi (We want to inform the public there is no truth to the text messages circulating about a powerful quake that will strike tonight)," Abigania said in an interview on dzRH radio.
"Walang tool para mag-predict ng quake. Walang US Geological Society, ang katrabaho natin US Geological Service (We have no tools to predict quakes. And there is no such thing as a US Geological Society. What we're work with is the US Geological Service)," she said.
The text messages had indicated a magnitude-6.8 quake would strike the country.
This came after a powerful quake hit China where tens of thousands of people were killed. - GMANews.TV |

wala pa kong narinig na weather equipment or anything na makakapag predict ng paglindol.
Is it possible to predict earthquakes?
No! Although earthquake tend to occur within defined zones around the world, they are effectively random phenomena. You can predict earthquakes for exactly the same reason that you can't predict exactly how a piece of glass will break of you drop it. And the glass is perhaps easier, because at least you can see the forces which act on the glass. The forces which cause earthquakes are generally hidden.
Having said all of this, there are statistical techniques which can be used to predict very approximately where and when an earthquake might be due. However these predictions are vague (within say 200 kilometres of a point within the next 10 years) so as to be relatively useless for disaster planning. |

No volcanology and seismology office in the world can predict when and where the next earthquake would be.
I also received that kind of message today. That message was just a product of a sick mind.
Only God knows when He would send a plague on earth. |

I just received the following text message.
US Geological Society predicts a 6.8 magnitude earthquake will hit Philippine plates tonight. Please be calm and alert. This text message is from Hawaii State Emergency Preparedness Office. Let's pray this will not happen. End of text message.
Earthquakes cannot be predicted but preparedness and prayers can save us. |

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology would like to inform the general public that the text message currently circulating in the Philippines about a prediction by a certain “US Geological Society” of a “magnitude 6.8 earthquake to hit Philippine Plates tonight”, purportedly issued by the “Hawaii State Emergency Preparedness Office” IS A HOAX.

I received an IM too, with a link to a recent 5.3 magnitude earthquake that hit Ilagan City, east of Baguio, about 245 km from Manila, Philippines.
I find it as hoax. IMHO, theres no device yet that can predict the exact location and time of an earthquake. |

I received a message too, but as far as I know, in the current state of technology, earthquakes cannot be predicted. |

Is that the official name? I thought it was "US Geological Survey". But the earthquake text message is definitely a sick hoax. |

I received that kind kind of text too... Medyo nakakatakot but, it could probably true, sabi nyo nga hindi ma pepredict kung san magkakaroon ng lindol, of course we cannot say this could not happen too.. it could be possible, all we need is to pray and ask the Lord not to allow it, or maybe He will send a message to us thru this. |
