My friend is a Singaporean Malay and i pity her (she wears tudung)? |
she has graduated with a diploma from a local polytechnic and is looking for a job in Singapore. Sadly, many posts require those who are bilingual in English and Mandarin.
There were also some cases when employers (during interview) said directly to her - we only want to employ Chinese people
and a hospital staff actually told her that the employer can employ her - but she must "compromise" (by not wearing tudung).
she feels she is "racially discriminated" - although the local media (including Malay newspapers), has mentioned that there are opportunities for EVERYBODY, or based on MERITOCRACY...
However, fom her experiences, she thinks otherwise....
and I have also visited Singapore few times...and many of the shops are owned by the Chinese...
referring to the recent unrest in Tibet....I was wondering if Malay Singaporeans are also suffering (in slience) - since many shops there are owned by Chinese...and the rental prices are very, very high (per month)
what u think? Additional Details after all, the Malays in Singapore are NATIVES. Chinese and Indians are simply immigrants. Tak baik buat orang native macam gitu...and the NATIONAL LANGUAGE is MALAY (not Mandarin) |

I dunno.. thats the reason why too much of Malay singaporeans moves to Malaysia.. sad, rascist singapore!!! i dunno what to say.. Doctors there cant were tudung, and then Malay never gets to be judge... I dont know.. She has to be strong... Ask her to open her own company.. I h8 singapore!!!! Talking about multiracialism... damn!!!
Truth must prevail!!!
Edit: true, the chinese and Indians do suffer like that in Malaysia, but not as bad as the Malays in spore suffer... |

I will give you an honest answer in Malaysia is the opposite if you are going to work in the goverment sector those employer prefer to hire those who wear head scarf even thought that person is not competent at all. In Malaysia almost 80% of the people that are being employ in the goverment sector are Malay, but the people in charge will keep denying and say that it doesn't happen but in fact it does happen |

yes. i agree with all replies here. M'sian chinese were being discriminated too.
Just for supplement. S'pore do not has a formal policy/law on "no discrimination allowed". So, no only about race. Age, sex, appearance etc discrimination still exist. (Eg: recruitment ad : "prefer male").
Discrimination happen in every where in the world. Even in nz, even there is formal law to go against that, but : when look at the CV, look at ur name, they will know whether u r Asian or not. If still can't judge, will ring u, when u talk, they will know if u r born here or not. If still not satisfied, ask for interview, from there, they can see ur age, sex, race. Then decide to hire u or not.
So, nothing can prevent that. Still happen anyway, apparently or 'secretly'.
Notes:
- please do not try to stir-up the racist issue between the chinese and malays - on all these countries. (It happened before 40 yrs ago). So we don't need another one.
- No one would like to see all chinese in all these countries would lead a life like the indonesian chinese. right ?
ps: i personally has no problem with muslim wearing tudung or even wrapping her whole body. after many years living in nz, i even find it very 'close'(to my heart) when i see someone wearing tudung... |

Chinese and Indians in Malaysia also suffers that (In silence) |

But in Malaysia isn't it the other way round?
The chinese there paid the same high rent of the shop as the other races and foreigners alike.
Govt sectors jobs does not require u to speak Mandarin, but only English.
And the Constitution does not state race as a factor when appointing key minster posts, Deputy PM is an Indian. |

I guess in this so called MODERN world, one has to put up with lots of unfair and unjust situation, one just have to turn ones blind eye and get on with life. It is very unfortunate if a certain dress code is an issue, but we just have to respect that certain protocol. Same as what we have to do if we are to apply for a job, let say in muslim country. l am sure your friend will do well in what she wants to do, afterall, chinese is not the only race in S'pore. And not all Malay, Indian, Sikhs..... are unemploy. l wish her well and l am a Chinese.
Yanar. You just can't go comdeming the whole of S'pore because of just a little incident. Are you too bias to think about those people closer to home? You are being very insensitive. |

I sympathise with your friend but your additional details, I don't agree with it.
What about the Chineses and Indians? Do you think we have equal rights as the Malays in Malaysia? Many incompetent Malays get through government funded universities easily while the rest of the non-bumiputras have to sweat blood just to manage to get into one of these universities. You think that's fair?
Racial discrimination is everywhere even though politians deny so.
It will never go away.
Does she speak proper and good english?
If she does, she must be among the useful and hardworking Malays around.
I have met college/university graduates who canoot speak proper English. All they can say is 'I' and 'you'. |

i tend to agree with Jedi on Malaysia is opposite of Singapore, in terms of working in the government sector...anyways, i'm from Singapore, and there are actually lots of Malay/Muslims working in the government sector in Singapore, like in the ICA building, Sub Court, hospitals, and so on.....well...i am a Malay lady, and i dun quite have any problem looking for jobs in Singapore, i guess ur friend still lack of experiences in the job that she's looking for....and u said she went to hospital for interview, i guess if she's looking for a post as a nurse, they need to wear a uniform, i have friends working as nurses, and some of them wear the headscarf, but they have to comply with the hospital rules to wear nursing uniform which is long trousers and a blouse....and if u go to Geylang Serai or Arab St, u can see most of the shops there own by Malays/Muslims...and there are lots of successful Malay/Muslims businessmen in Singapore too.....
and to add on....
discriminations and double standard happen in any part of the world....i experienced double standard when i went to a Middle East country, just becos we're Asian, they tend to look down on us....but ironically both we and the Mid East ppl are Muslims too |

for god's sake check your facts. what makes you think malays are natives to singapore?
talk about meritocracy. if i could speak english and chinese and malay, and you can speak only malay and english, who has more merits? it's as simple as abc. i doubt you even understand what meritocracy means. check your dictionary too.
i wonder why you never try to check or at least see compare the "racial discrimination" happening in singapore with what happens in your own backyard. you have been brainwashed my dear.

wat i tink, i think from all ur question ask here, u are racist, not singapore. coming from malaysia which practice bumiputra policies, clean up ur own acts first before accusing other countries of racial discrimination. if this country has less narrow minded pple like u, malaysia will had long surpass singapore and not lag behind. |

what to do..there's always racial discrimination every where and that just not in Singapore and Malaysia!
Europe too has imposed a ban in wearing a head gear on Muslims and the Sikh!!
being racist is just plain stupid! |

HAR HAR.
I don't know...... maybe it's because she just isn't good enough. If a Chinese isn't good enough, he/she will be turned away too. It's called meritocracy, get used to it. Or, just move to Malaysia. Yeah, that works too.
Please don't turn this into a race issue when it's more a matter of competence. |

Yes, Singapore always like that. They said they are so proud of their meritocracy (even their malay) and multiracial society live in harmony but it actually not so. I was told by one of this malay guy in govt who said only 20% of promotion is reserved to the malay. Yet they are making so much noise about malays making the majority in M'sia govt.
Then during last PRU 12 their Mediacorp TV reported many bad things about M'sia e.g. racial tensions and possible for another 1969 riot if BN lost 2/3 majority. They may have secret agenda bcoz they are competing with us for foreign investment. |
