my complexion is very malay / filipino but my features are a combination of malay, spanish and a little chinese. when people look at me, some stare but maybe my contrasting features (and when i speak, my accent) confuse them so much that they don't assume but ask what my specific nationality is. of course, i proudly say that i am filipina.

I sometimes get mistake for a Kiwi or Thai. I hate that but then again some people don't know better. When I tell them I'm Filipino they go "oh right" where the hell is that. Ironic how some people think they are smart and don't even know where the Philippines is on the map.

Here's a list of what I'm often mistaken for:
Thai, Vietnamese, Singaporean, Malaysian, Indonesian
Occasionally I also get mistaken as
North Indian or Mexican

I think this is a classic example of how much internationalized Filipinos are :)

i live in Dallas, TX. and a lot of my friends first thought that i was either Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean(which i don't even look close to), Mexican and Indonesian. But mostly Hawaiian.

I'm in Los Angeles and sometimes, people think I am Mexican... simply because of huge Mexican population in LA.

Anathema Device
A funny thing happened to me the last time I was in Bangkok. A caucasian looking guy with a southeast asian looking woman approached me in a supermarket and said that they can't speak Thai and they want to know if the tube of hair product they're holding is a conditioner. Smiling, I told them that I'm not Thai so I wouldn't be able to help them. A bit embarrassed for the mistake, they profusely apologized; and I told them that people do mistake me a lot for a Thai national.

After laughing about it, they talked to each other and I heard the woman use a Filipino word. Curious, I asked her (in Tagalog) if she happens to be Filipina, and she answered me in Tagalog. We all had a good laugh about it.

Japanese. Also, when I go grocery shopping, a hispanic person would talk to me and I tell them I can't speak nor understand what they are saying to me.

I work at a Help Desk and I was trying to help a co-worker over the telephone whom I don't talk to often (can't even remember the last time!). Anyway, we were into about 16 minutes of fixing his problem and suddenly he said: "magandang umaga, am I correct?". I said yes, then we moved on to finishing fixing his problem. This just happened the other day :-).

I've been mistaken to be someone coming from HongKong, China or Korea. Then just recently, someone mentioned that I could pass up as a Vietnamese.

i live in Michigan, and mostly people don't really know "what" i am, so i just tell them that i'm filipino, and they're just "oh...", but sometimes, they say i look like vanessa hudgens, which i really don't think i don't. i'm half-spanish/half-filipino, but i'm a combination of both, so you can't really tell that i'm half spanish and half filipino...

Indonesian, Nepali, Mexican.

This is kinda reverse situation. Early in the morning I went for a walk to buy some cigarette in the streets of Dubai but not even one canteen or grocery store was open so I went back to the Hotel, sat on the lobby and wait till I see a Filipino smoke so I can ask or buy a stick. I saw two man from the reception walked towards me and sat on the table next to me. I move closer to hear what language they are speaking. I didn't understand a word but what comes to my mind is Ilonggo... Then one of them lit a cigar, so I tighten my pants and ask the guy... Sir musta? pilipino kayo? he nodded. Pahingi naman ng yosi. he gave me the pack and I picked one. Before I left I said "Salamat". after several minutes he sat on the chair next to me and gave me a business card and said "If ever you'll be going to Indonesia just let me know.." hahahahaha

I'm of mixed blood, so I get the whole lot thrown at me!

I've been told I look Filipino, Lebanese, Syrian, Vietnamese, Thai, French, Spanish, Mexican, Colombian, and Russian. One person even asked me if I was Turkish!

What throws them mostly is that I speak Spanish, Arabic, and Russian (as well as English and Tagalog), with a smattering of French - or so I guess!
